Now that Hayley's Helsinki date has come and gone it feels like an appropriate time to remind everyone what a talented singer Saara Aalto is. Here's Saara's cover of Who Painted The Moon Black: www.oamk.fi/~maalto/biisit/2005-01-19/01.%20Who%20Painted%20The%20Moon.mp3Saara has been writing her own music since she was a young girl and has won several important singing competitions, including the CharlotteChurchFans contest from 2003. I'm sure finally getting to meet Hayley will inspire Saara all the more to continue her musical studies. She's already off to a wonderful start.

I think Saara's better than Hayley, in all honesty.

Saara is also an acclaimed pianist. In fact, her music teachers wanted her to specialize in piano instead of voice! Here's a video of Saara playing the Paganini variations back in 2001 when she was just 14: koti.mbnet.fi/musica/pikkunen/VIDEO_2001_Paganinis_variations2.wmvBy the way, Finland is known for its remarkable choirs. Here's a hauntingly beautiful Finnish choir piece with Saara as soloist: www.edu.ouka.fi/koulut/madetoja/musiikki/kuoro/laulu02.mp3As to Portia's opinion, I don't know if she's "better" than Hayley. These are two unique artists, both exploring and improving their gifts all the time. It's a little premature to make comparisons and hardly necessary. Saara is the most humble person going and would be mortified that anyone would measure her against one of her favorite performers.

Hello Steve! I've listened to all the clips, and the choral piece in Finnish is really beautiful. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifSaara is certainly a fine pianist. I can get the sound on both clips, but sadly I can't see the video picture on either. All I get is this message: "Unable to download an appropriate decompressor." Best Wishes from London, Richard

Hi Richard,
When I get back to Holland after my stay in Australia, I'll have a look at the problem of the videos. That will be in about a week's time. I know that WMV, despite being a native Windows format, can hide a format that's not compatible with all windows versions.

Hi Richard and Gerrit,
The WMV clip seems to be using a weird combination of codec: Audio: Windows Media Audio 16000Hz mono 16Kbps [Raw Audio 0] Video: Windows Media Video 8 320x240 15.00fps 84Kbps [Raw Video 1]
WMV8 should be supported by most recent version of windows, perhaps it's the permission or firewall settings.

Thanks Gerrit! I've just watched both videos without any problems, and Saara is a magnificent pianist, if a little serious! That looks like a harpsichord next to the piano, so now I want to hear Saara play that! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest Wishes from London, Richard

I'm having an important piano exam tomorrow, so I'm going to practise now. I have some interesting pianoclips of me in a minidisc, I try to find some time to put them to my computer and available to you to hear them. Some singing clips: www.oamk.fi/~maalto/biisit/2005-01-19/Have a nice day!

Hi, My piano exam went very well, all the judges gave me best points!! So, I'm so super happy! I recorded my exam, so now you all can go and listen to it. I was so nervous, I thought all the time that I'd forget something, because I had to play without the sheetmusic. So, of course there are some mistakes and not so good parts, but in general it went very well! I hope you like it! I played Mozart's Sonate in A major.. it's a sweet song..and long! Bach's predule and fuga in B major.. very nice, I like them a lot! Tempo is very fast, so it was quite difficult techniqually. Tauno Marttinen's "Kimalluksia". Tauno Marttinen is a still-living Finnish composer (male)..this song is very cool, and very modern as you can hear! My teacher said I played it very well in the exam.. please tell me what you think And finally Grieg's Wedding day at Troldhaugen! It's a romantic and virtuous song, I love it! It's so beautiful! And all this you can hear here: koti.mbnet.fi/~musica/pianoplease, remember I was so nervous while I was playing..forgive me those little mistakes I make

Hi Saara, Many thanks for telling us about your exam. I am delighted to know it went so well. Everyone is nervous during an exam and most are nervous during a recording session. I am full of admiration for the fact that you coped with both at the same time. I have listened to all four files. They are amazing and thoroughly enjoyable. You have no need to apologise for the length - that was Mozart's fault! One thing I can never understand is how performers like you memorise such complex works in the first place. You should get an award for that alone! Thank you again for allowing us to hear you play. Best wishes, Roger

Congratulations Saara! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifI've listened to excerpts from all four of your exam pieces, and I couldn't hear any sign of nerves. They all sound very professional to me. My favourite at the moment is the Mozart, and I'll listen to all four clips in full later this week when I should have more time to spare. I'll also bring a better pair of headphones along to the Internet Café. Best Wishes from London, Richard
