the 2am one woke me up so I was tired at work this morning. but the 4.9 one at 10am certainly woke me up. The wooden trays containing the mushrooms were moving about a bit lol. At home my CD stake fell over again and some other things fell over too. When I was at the Dick Smith store in the Riccarton Mall parts of the ceiling had fallen down.

We are still getting aftershocks in Christchurch. Today at 6am we had a 5.1 which shook the house a bit. Plus at work we felt a few more in the morning. it seems to be rumbling away, one wonders if the faultline shouldn't be settling down a bit; seems to have woken up. is it affecting the buildings further. it must be quite a challenge for that ancient morter to hold its ground..

I've been debating about whether to mention this, but early last year I predicted there would be an earthquake in New Zealand. No, this was not in our "predictions" threads, but on a panel of local prognosticators in my home town. Anyone wanting to read about it can click this article. And if you want to see 2011's forecast, go to this other article. Seismologists speak of the "ring of fire" which includes New Zealand, making it especially prone to quakes. I suppose it's kind of like living in California.... very beautiful place but unstable ground. I hope Kiwis are good at building earthquake-resistant structures because, obviously, they will come in handy now and forever.

I hope you guys have multitiered quake preparations, just in case a big one hits.
I hope it'll never happen again, but fault slips has happened in the past, and will happen again when we least expected it.

Wow, Steve... I had no clue. So, when you make your predictions for Hayley, are you using your psychic abilities? That's cheating! All the others' predictions were pretty predictable; anyone could think of those things. Yours seem less so. But hopefully they won't all happen. So, is Hayley included for the "year of women"? Well, I hope there aren't any really big earthquakes. And the one in Italy can't happen if Hayley goes there. Steve, don't they get tornadoes in Nebraska? And here's hoping that the Hobbiton set is earthquake resistant. Filming starts mid-late Feb.

It was a major quake. 6.3 centred near Lyttleton and being so shallow it caused major damage in the CBD. Cathedral is badly damaged. I was at the movies when it hit. It was very scary. The whole mall shook. There were several big aftershocks as I waited to get out of the mall. Looks like there were several injuries in the CBD. Lot of building damage. People are trapped.

Hi spiderman and Ross,
This is shocking, it's already being reported on BBC news over in the UK and they've just said there are reports of injuries due to damage in ChCh Town Hall. What is the CBD?
A daytime quake like this sounds nasty, good luck you two the Westenras and everyone in the Christchurch area.

CBD is the central bussiness district where all the hotels, shops Cathedral etc are. Sounds like there will be deaths this time.

This is just coming through on our news reports now, this is really bad, hope all your families are safe Ross and spidy, does anyone know if Hayley knows or are her family safe, I have a few friends in NZ and haven't heard yet how they are faring in this, you guys have just gotten over the last lot from September, Queensland Brisbane was hit with a massive storm again causing major catastrophe, black outs and flooding. Its definitely time for this little black duck to get off the coast and head inland, its a wonder these big quakes aren't causing tidal waves somewhere. keep safe guys. regards Rob.
