My thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy.
Just heard Hayley on the radio (4FM Ireland) saying her dad was ok but the building he had been in was destroyed.

Hi everyone,
This is shocking news indeed. I know what it's like to be going about your business and have nature come in and suddenly devastate everything. The sudden violence of an earthquake must have been very scary indeed.
Honestly, in this part of the world it's starting to feel like nothing ever happens except natural disasters. Floods, cyclones, fires and earthquakes.
My thoughts are with everyone down in Christchurch and New Zealand.

Just heard Hayley give a telephone interview on BBC News 24. As expected she is utterley devasted and it must be very difficult for her being so far away from family and friends at these difficult times.
We can only continue to give our love and support.

Hi Folks Here is a list of the damage I have observed so far. - The bell tower of the Anglican Cathedral (in the Square) has fallen into the Nave. All the Cathedral staff got out safely but there were tourists in the tower at the time of the collapse.
- The whole front of the Catholic Cathedral appears to be missing. 2 square towers with domes on top are no more.
- The central dome of the Theatre Royal where Fiona and Ian played on Saturday has fallen into the stalls. Fi's show will be the last one in the theatre for some time.
- The 4 story building that housed the local TV station has collapsed. The local TV station was on the ground floor. About 15 crew and presenters are missing
- Significant damage to major roads, either burst pipes under the road or sections of road have raised up to be like judder bars
- Christchurch Hospital is damaged but operational. Some cases are being flown to other cities.
- Airport is closed except for emergency flights until at least 08:00 Wednesday morning
- Significant damage to the CBD (Gerald's shop is right in the middle)
- Very little damage to the area where Hayley's family live
- Many houses on the Port Hills are uninhabitable
- We have power and water in our house near the airport but most areas of the city have no power or water
- Only 5 sewerage pumping stations are still operational.
- Fiona and Ian's house has more significant damage but is still habitable. They are safe
- Police, Army, Search and Rescue and medical staff are being flown in from other cities and Australia is sending an Urban Search and Rescue team
- And worst of all my car is parked outside the Cathedral with a wall about to crush it. No one is allowed to move the car so I think I shall be replacing it rather soon

Despite car--its only a car!--you seem to have cause to be thankful. Our fears of course are was anyone in Gerald's shop?
All the best. I'm sure half the world at least is emotionally with the kiwis right now.
Cheers

Thanks Jillian. What a relief and what an escape but of course anyone's loved one is a tragedy for many people and there is going to be much trauma for many when we can only pray for their mitigation.

Hayley was on Classic FM news at 9am to explain her dad was OK although his business (gem dealing) had collapsed. Good news. Buildings can be rebuilt. People can't. I wonder if she and other NZ musicians will do a fundraising concert ?

Just seen Hayley give a very poignant interview live from the Sky News studio. She is very relieved that her family is safe but has still to hear about some friends.
Interestingly, Hayley mentioned that she is due to go back to New Zealand to work in April.

Whoa I just saw about this on the news in the A&E waiting room (I'm currently completely deaf in one ear-- I've been told this should only be temporary due to very bad ear infection) I was feeling really down about/ with it then I saw this and suddenly I don't feel so bad about my ear.. My thoughts and prayers are with all those people affected by this tragedy.. Best wishes Sing
