Hi all,
I've learned of the latest quake from CNN. I believe Lyletton is where Belinda's parents live.
I shall keep those affected in my prayers.
Stay safe, Joe

We are getting TV pictures now in the UK at 2 am, from TVNZ & TV3, this looks really really serious, with collapsed and many evacuated buildings, a real disaster. It's currently the main news story here. My goodness, it looks awful. My thoughts and prayers go out to all over there. Dave

Hi all,
CNN's 'Piers Morgan Tonight' is showing pictures of the devastation. Multiple fatalities has been reported in ChCh ...and many buses crushed by collapsing buildings.

AGAIN!?!?
If it's a US city, I'd tell everyone to permanently move out of there. But it's NZ, there's not a whole lot of moving that they can do...
Well, here's hoping that at least everyone is OK. And with quakes being so common these days, it's reasonable to hope that everyone is well prepared.

Even though we have an existing thread about seismic activity in Christchurch, this latest catastrophe is on a scale far beyond all previous events. We are now talking about a HUGE calamity — one that will undoubtedly change the focus of this forum for many of us. It will also almost certainly shift Hayley's priorities in the most urgent way imaginable. There is simply no telling what a game-changer today's news will be for her. From the news wire, here is what you should all know about this horrific tragedy unfolding still: New Zealand Earthquake Kills 656.3 Magnitude quake strikes Christchurch at lunchtime, badly damaging buildings VOA News February 22, 2011 People walk past rubble as they help the injured evacuate after an earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, in this February 22, 2011 image taken from video footage. New Zealand's prime minister says at least 65 people are dead in an earthquake that struck the city of Christchurch, collapsing numerous buildings as people worked inside. Prime Minister John Key said the 6.3-magnitude quake, which struck around lunchtime Tuesday, is "an absolute tragedy" for the city and its people. Police reported fatalities in several parts of the city and numerous injuries. They say two buses were crushed by falling buildings. Many buildings in the city center collapsed, and Christchurch cathedral was heavily damaged. Power and telephone lines are cut in some places. Some roads caved in and at least one bridge has been damaged. Thousands of people have fled buildings and gathered in the streets of Christchurch as the city is now being hit by a series of aftershocks. Flights in and out of Christchurch were temporarily cancelled. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered about 5 kilometers from the city at a depth of 4 kilometers. Christchurch, one of New Zealand's largest cities, was hit by a 7.1- magnitude earthquake last September and a series of aftershock has rattled the city ever since. Mayor Bob Parker told Radio New Zealand that Tuesday's temblor felt like a whole new earthquake had struck, and not an aftershock. The mayor advised people not to drive. New Zealand's geological service says the earthquake has caused more damage than the stronger one in September because of its relatively shallow depth.

This is just coming through on our news reports now, this is really bad, hope all your families are safe Ross and spidy, does anyone know if Hayley knows or are her family safe rob we now know that thankfully, hayley's family are ok; i think we all feel quietly lucky that this isnt last week; can you imagine us frantically trying to work out whether hayley was there or well? it would have driven us all nuts. im sure i would have slept with my phone next to my pillow, just waiting at this point, i think we need to all focus our positive thoughts oon hayley, so as to console her in what must be a really upsetting experiance. she must feel quite powerless and forlorn being so far from a homeland and family who need her. rob: the christchurch branches of my family are understood to be well, thanks ... everyone there has reported through channels. my cousin was visiting daddy in dunedin. we feel lucky. 30 aftershocks since the 6.3, no earthquakes anywhere else in NZ... larges 5, 2x4.6 the spiderman

Hello Spidy, GEE this is tragic, its heart stopping, I am so glad that your family and Hayley’s family are safe. We have been watching the news most of the afternoon and such devastation, there is still people trapped in buildings, our Prime Minister released a statement not long after the event having immediately sent a team of 70 consisting of medical personnel and rescue opps, I felt very proud when she said to the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, New Zealand is a part of our family and anything you want just ask for it and its on its way immediately, I still haven’t heard if any of my friends over there are all Ok yet just praying they are. It seems a lot of the phones are down so I won’t cause more issues trying to ring. But a mate of mine, Garth Jenkins works in the inner CBD of CH CH so I am really fearful for his safety. I can’t get him on his mobile. Regards Rob. Ill just modify this post as I have just received a text message from Garth, he and his family are Ok, he said that most of the quake is centred around CH CH so all our friends should be Ok. and I couldnt text him back Spidy so your probably right there, well I did but he didn't reply, but at least he got my missed call to text me. fwewww. here's hopeing.

rob.. the celltowers are down or overloaded as tends to happen in a crisis such as this; phoning him wont do any good.. it just wont connect; i understand the feeling... i get it everytime something happens in my family cos no-one tells me anything. for general earthquake info: canterburyearthquake.org.nz/www.civildefence.govt.nz/my office didnt get much work done today..... damage assessment for our employer via tv some of us can validly use that excuse consider this: 7.3 is 30x stronger than 6.3... now imagine if septembers earthquake happened in the same place.... todays earthquake was tragic, yes; but we are lucky CHC is still there

I was shocked to hear that Christchurch has again been hit by a major earthquake and that there has been a considerable loss of life. My thanks to everyone who has reported so far and am glad that Hayley's family are ok.
