Hi everyone,
Australian's can also donate to the Salvation Army New Zealand Earthquake appeal at Woolworths. You just add it to your grocery bill at the checkout. It's a really easy way to donate (I did it tonight) and it's great if you're not one for making internet transactions.
Cheers, Jillian

But when you do merciful deeds, don't let your left hand know what your right hand does,
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Let not thy left hand know - In many cases, works of charity must be hidden from even our nearest relatives, who, if they knew, would hinder us from doing............
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
But when thou dost alms,.... Do it so privately, and with so much secrecy, that, if it was possible, thou mightest not know it thyself, much less make it known to others:

This reminds me of a story about a girl who had a dream she was walking with God as she saw 2 sets of footprints in the sand. Later in life bad things happened: she got divorced,was made redundant and worst of all lost her best friend in an earthquake. Then she could only see one set of footprints. She was troubled by this as she felt all alone. One day she died, went to heaven and stormed through the pearly gates to confront God about her dream.
"Now look here, God" she said. "When the earthquake struck I saw just one set of footprints in the sand. You weren't there for me, were you ? Why did you abandon me when I needed you most ?"
God heard this and started to laugh. "Now look here," He said, "When you saw just one set of footprints, that's when I carried you."
Here endeth my sermon, Martin, but you've probably heard that story before (I amended it to stay on topic). If not feel free to use it for your Church meeting.

It's 10 years ago today that we had a 6.8 earthquake in the Seattle area. It was actually closest to Olympia, Washington's capital, and even caused some damage to the capitol building. I was in high school at the time, and a few classrooms ended up with holes in the ceilings, but nothing worse than that. That was the biggest earthquake I've ever been in, and I don't ever want to be in another one, because if there is one, I'm afraid it'll be worse, and set off Mt. Rainier (an active volcano).

Hi Libby,
We once had a 4.3 in Leicestershire. Does that even register? All I remember was a sudden bang, a bit like blasting felt when I worked in a mine. And that was it. No damage to buildings.
But I have a trip to Oakland Ca. coming up next month. That really is an earthquake zone. I woun't mind if I don't experience one though!

New Idea Magazine in New Zealand today has an article about Hayley and the earthquake. Here is the front cover:- And here is the piece about Hayley and her dad:- So Hayley plans to do a concert in NZ in April to raise funds. I will try my best to get to that concert. So sad that Gerald saw some horrible scenes after the earthquake.

I hope you never do experience an earthquake they are shattering in more ways than one. cheers, take care, Rodders

There will be 2 minutes silence at 12:51pm Tuesday in NZ to respect the families of the victims of the earthquake. Thanks for mentioning this, Ross. It was very moving (a few minutes ago). Sky News in the UK and CNN International both interrupted programmes (apparently curtailing ad breaks) to show the two minutes' silence 'live', respect to them. Sadly, BBC News did not interrupt a pre-recorded discussion they were showing - shame on them. I think they will get considerable criticism for their ill-advised decision. Dave

Unfortunately, this tragedy doesn't seem to get the spotlight it deserves here in America. The media here is simply too preoccupied by what's happening in Libya.
Even my Church didn't make any special appeal for donations for this disaster, which they did for Haiti. Truth be told I'm very dissappointed with them.

I don't know where you live and what news media covers your area; but in the St Louie Metro area there has been extensive coverage of the quake in Christchurch. To take nothing away from Christchurch the quake in Haiti was covered more for the following reasons: Haiti is in our hemisphere Many Haitians live in the U S, and they were concerned about their families The media has an obligation to keep them abreast of all the news they could The death toll was much more and the suffering was horrendous of cours, Dennis one loss of life is too many; but I hope you can see why Hatti got more coverage. The Haitian people for the most part live in abject poverty and to have a quake follow a devastating flood is devastating for a country that lost thousands in 2010. Please don't think I'm an apologist for the media. I'm critical of them on a regular basis. I just hope you can understand the fact that for the most part, given the same circumstances that the media will pick up the most relevant story. Beast wishes Larry

I thought Hayley attributed her sleeplessness to jet lag. But either way, it's good that she was awake, so she could call her family right away.
A 4.3 is pretty small. The 3.3 they just had in Hawaii was felt more I think, probably because the land mass is smaller, or something.
