I heard on my local news the Bishop of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford is starting an appeal to help rebuild the cathedral. I believe Christ Church in Oxford was instrumental in its original construction back in 1864. I remember Isaac is training as a civil engineer. He's going to be busy once he qualifies.

I sincerely hope they rebuild the iconic Christchurch cathedral but I don't know if it would ever look the same. They would have to install braces to fortify the structure against future quakes which are a certainty in New Zealand.

Hi
My thoughts and prayers are with all the residents of Christchurch. I spent 5 days in The Millenium Hotel, near the Cathedral, in February 2006 so am familiar with the City. I recently had contact with a distant cousin there whilst researching my family history. I hope he and is family are OK.

Thanks for the link, Richard.
Terrible news. I hope Hayley's friends are okay.

They would have to install braces to fortify the structure against future quakes which are a certainty in New Zealand. probably, they can redo a spire, but it will never have the cultural resonance of the original. my fear is though,t hat the substructure of the cathedral ahs been weakened and it might need major structural reinforcement. a similar problem occurs with the hotel, that is allegedly falling over... it may be repairable, but better is to pull it down and build a new one. we dont want a situation were they repair something and it falls down with people inside. the spiderman

The destruction of that beautiful cathedral hurts so much. I've never been there, but I think how I would have felt if whilst I was living overseas, as I have done a few times, I heard that the city where I grew up had been devastated like that.
I grew up in Peterborough, a city which like Christchurch has a beautiful cathedral. Hayley has performed there, and said how beautiful she thought it was. If that was destroyed, I'm sure it would knock the heart out of the City. Not only that but of those, like me who live further afield and know and love it.
So my heart goes out to the people of Christchurch, to Hayley and her family, and to all who have suffered because of this. Although I have never been there, I am sure that Christchurch is a city I would love. A city full of lovely people, if the ones I have met are anything to go by, who don't deserve this. I had hoped to visit NZ some day, and maybe that can still happen.
These days, like Hayley I'm sure, I walk and work with tears in my eyes. Not just for the cathedral and other fine buildings, but most of all for the human cost. The families who have lost loved ones, the lost livelihoods (like Gerald's) and their pain. It might seem a long was away to some people, but it is real and it happened and it hurts. I pray to God that he will comfort those who have lost loved ones.
I pray almost constantly for the people of Christchurch, for Hayley and her family, and especially for the bereaved. May God heal them, insofar as that is possible.

Hi All. Just to add here in case anyone wants to donate from OZ, this is the Australian Red Cross site to donate, www.redcross.org.au/NZEQ2011.htmOr you can donate straight to the New Zealand red cross society direct which is what I did because I think your donation will get to where it’s needed faster’ it also has a toll free number so you can donate by credit card but not sure if that number would work from outside our area. www.redcross.org.nz/cms_display.phpNew Zealand Red Cross, and make sure to fill in the section which tells them which appeal you want your money to go to. Much love Tracy,

I donated to 2 charity organizations I often use, World Vision and Operation Blessing International. World Vision (which was founded in my area) said that they have a base in New Zealand, and right now they're working with the Salvation Army with rescue and relief efforts. Their site doesn't have anything where you can specifically donate to New Zealand (at this time, at least), but I just donated to the Disaster Relief funds, in hopes that it will somehow help with the relief efforts there. Operation Blessing has a similar fund.

I just heard on the news today that there was a 3.3 quake in or near Honolulu, Hawaii. I'm not happy to hear that, because it seems to mean the tremors are headed this direction...

Hi John Just seen this on facebook
Is this our Belinda? [/quote] This is very distressing - unless there are two Belinda's with the same surname, it must be ours. We must hope and pray that she is OK. Best wishes Grant

Hello johnh and Grant, If it is "our" Belinda, I don't understand the above message. Richard mentioned a couple of days ago that Belinda has posted on her Facebook since the Earthquake occurred and we were of course thankful to know she is therefore, presumably, safe. So, too, is Rodders (scoobedoo) who logged in to the forum yesterday, and I think we have heard from all our other Christchurch based members since the Earthquake. As Richard is unlikely to be online for perhaps another 10 hours or so, perhaps someone more familiar with Facebook than I could check that out? But I am sure Richard is right. Dave

Dave Hi all, This page was made in concern over "our" Belinda...I've known about it for a few days, and "attended" this event. Belinda is quite safe...although I don't know if her house or place of employment was damaged. Best wishes, Joe
