We have hit a milestone of having had 10000 quakes since the Sept 2010 one.

Wow. Do you think they're ever going to go away?

Hi Ross, I am so sorry to hear this, I spent a very pleasant day in the Cathedral when Dame Malvina had her concert there. I do hope they will consider re building it, even at another site. It is possible, but would require great determination on the part of the people of Christchurch.

What a pity. Now I'll never see it for real. I hope they rebuild it. But that will take years I'm sure, even after waiting for the quakes to stop.

Sad news. It is going to be demolished by hand (that is, not using any equipment) and then rebuilt. Anglican Bishop Victoria Matthews says a new cathedral with a different design would be built in its place.

I hope at least build something similar to it, because it was a very beautiful building. My sympathies to all of those in Chch. -Best from Bama

Oh no! I really hope sometime soon things will start to slow down and settle, and that one day it can be rebuilt...I hope they can at least build something similar- to give a similar feel to the city...From the photos I've seen it looked like such a huge part of the city best wishes Sing

Thanks Ross for the news, I am sorry to hear this.
The story has made the main BBC News broadcast this evening in the UK, their video footage shows it to be in a pretty bad state. It's a very sad day, even from this distance.

I hope they don't simply reduce it to rubble and cart the debris away, because those bricks and stones could be auctioned off in fund-raising. Having a piece of the cathedral on one's mantle or desk could serve as a poignant reminder of its fabled past. This might seems vulturish to some, but I think it would ultimately become part of the healing process.

I guess the new one will be built to withstand earthquakes. Siesmic buildings are expensive, and that requirement puts constraints on what can be built. I guess that is the reason why it has to be a different design to the old one.

Today we had the strongest quake in over 3 months with a 5.2 at 2:44pm off the coast of Christchurch. I didn't even feel it where I work but it was strong in town. Hope Hayley wasn't too scared if she is still in Christchurch.

Yesterday was the second anniversary of the Sept 4th 7.1 quake in Christchurch. And Mother Nature celebrated it by a huge hail storm at 6pm. Lots of lightning and big hail stones up to the size of golf balls. Today I went to Hagley Park to go on one of the buses which tour inside the cordoned off CBD to see how things are looking. Spring in Hagley Park although these daffodils were a bit battered from the hail One of the many buildings being demolished Only the facade remains on this buiding The battered Cathedral which will be slowly dismantled Here "Twinkle Toes" is biting into this skyscraper

It is so sad to see this. But be optimistic. Christchurch will be rebuilt. Thanks Ross.
