They have revised the 2 quakes to a 5.7 and a 6.3 which is the same strength as the Feb quake. Only these occurred on a new fault a few kms further West of the Feb quake. That means we still could get another big quake on the Feb quake fault. The historic Timeball Station in Lyttleton which was badly damaged in Feb has now collapsed. The Harbourlight Theatre also in Lyttleton where Fiona Pears loves to play was demolished last month. The Godley Head historic house where Fiona was married has now also collapsed. The large stain glass windows in the Christchurch Cathedral are now gone and it looks now like the Cathedral will have to be taken down before it can be rebuilt which will take years. The Town Hall where Hayley loves to sing was badly damaged in Feb so is probably further damaged. Even before yesterdays quakes it was estimated it will take 2.5 years to fix. Again it was the Eastern suburbs and Sumner which took the most damage again. The Western half of the city is still relatively normal.

Good grief, what a mess! When is it going to end?
At least I hear there were no deaths or serious injuries this time, but it is heartbreaking to see so many fine and historic buildings destroyed.
My thoughts and prayers are with all Christchurch people.

As well as Hayley and her family, we must also think of Fiona Pears, who is also very attached to Christchurch. The Harbour Light Theatre in Lyttelton was one of her favourite venues and she played there many times.

Not only have we had the quakes but the ash cloud from the Chilean volcano has greatly disrupted air travel in Australia and NZ. Today in Christchurch the only plane flying to Wellington was an old 1944 World War 2 DC3 as it can fly below 10000ft and has propellors (jet engines and turboprops are badly damaged by ash). The Canterbury Crusaders Rugby team are using the DC3 to get to Wellington tomorrow. Our captain (and the All blacks captain), Richie McCaw, is a patron for the DC3 trust and he can also pilot the plane but not in this case as he cannot fly fare paying passengers.

Today I helped the Farmy Army (farmers) and the Student Army clear houses of silt from the liquefaction . It was the old fashion way of shovels and wheelbarrows, hard work and some of the silt was very heavy and stunk of sewage. Had a great feed and a beer at the end of the day.

i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Today a new shopping area opened in the old City Mall (where Gerald had his shop). These new shops are made from old shipping containers. I am going on monday and i will take some photos.

i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Today I went to the new City Mall which is made from shipping containers. It was lovely and I think everyone was happy to get back into the centre of Christchurch. Over 200000 people came on the weekend.

Lately we have been allowed to enter the Cathedral Square to see the damaged Cathedral and other buildings. This used to be the tallest building. Now it is being demolished from the top downwards. Very sad looking Cathedral. The BNZ building behind the Chalice is to be demolished. Both these tall buildings will be demolished. Luckily these buildings will be saved. Part of the city Mall. This was where Gerald's store used to be in the City Mall.

Hi Jillian,
Just starting to see some of the news reports. One of then pinned the initial quake at 6.4 on the Richter scale.
One thinks back to the aftershocks affecting Christchurch last Christmas and Boxing Day.

Yes it has been a [censored] afternoon in Christchurch. So far we have had 10 aftershocks above 3.7 since the 5.5 quake at 2pm and includes a nasty 6.0 at 3:15pm which was centered in Christchurch.. All the malls have shut on a really busy shopping day before Christmas and most will not reopen until after Christmas. The airport was closed until 6pm. More liquefaction in the Eastern suburbs and rockfalls in the hill suburbs. Luckily still no damage in my house or at work. I hope Hayley has coped if she is still in Christchurch.

Hey Ross, Glad to hear you're okay. That is really dodgy and it's sad how it has had such a big impact on Christmas trading and people's holiday plans. Jillian

Here's a report from MSN News. Hayley's tweet suggests that she was out shopping when the worst quake struck.
