To be fair, Rhydian's album isn't out yet (or is it in Ireland?). HMV had equal facings of all the artists regarding Susan, Camilla, Enya, etc that were released this week (though Susan has whole stands to herself elsewhere in the shop)
Tesco isn't trying to promote different artists to the public, they are just trying to sell their products. Besides, it's the sales team of any artist that tries to convince HMV, Tesco, whatever that it is in the shop's best interest to give their artists more shelf space as that will give them money. Who's team were most convincing do you think? Susan Boyle's.
Don't blame music retailers, they are just trying to sell as many items as possible.

Hi Paul and Nicola, Yes, and I think as far as the UK is concerned, we need to remember that Susan Boyle has sold 300,000 copies of her album in 4 days so far this week, and could end up selling 450,000 to half a million by tomorrow night. Rhydian is unlikely to achieve 10% of that, Faryl and Hayley probably even less. So it's not surprising to discover that Susan Boyle is having a lot more shelf space devoted to her than those three combined will have (next week in the UK). Yes indeed, Market forces. Dave

I agree on that. Not a huge fan of Susan, but I found it very interesting to see that she's recorded a version of "Wings to Fly" which of course appeared on HSJS1. It's a bonus track on Susan's Japanese version of her album. You can hear it on YouTube. I would post it but I can't remember if that is allowed since it's a full song. It has different English lyrics (of course) and isn't as good as Hayley's version. (of course ) Hi Girls Well I'm happy for Miss Boyle; but it burns me up to see so many of these mediocre performers attain so much ill deserved fame. Then the real special ones like our Hayley has to work her b--- off to try and make it. Although I think Simon Cowell is a first class jerk I have to give him credit for being able to tap into the ears of the tone deaf general population and make a lot of money. I am particularly irritated at the feigned facial expressions he make when he sees one of these wannabes perform. What he is really thinking is how he can hype this poor soul into a cash cow. Man I'm really being a stinker today aren't I. Larry Seriously I dont think the general population is "tone deaf" and I would venture that more than half of the people who do well conpetitions of this sort are actually viable performers who for one reason or another simply never got a breal. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay AIkin would make in my opinion a fairly talented lineup - and that is just from one of the various shows. There are also people like Adam Lambert whose talent is unquestonalble but who may or may not self destruct for other reasons. One of the best ways to win a show like this is simply to exceed expectations - it works very well for the kids in general, and also has helped Ms Boyle in my impression. I am not surprised that she has a major release on her hands - but it would surprise me greatly if she had any staying power over time. I have been wrong before. I dont have the animus toward Mr Cowell that most people do - he does have a keen ear on the current pulse of pop music and has made a lot of amount of money in so doing. It is also important to note that he passed on signing Connie Talbot and dropped Bianca Ryan from his label for reasons which I suspect were more humane than many of his critics would give him credit for. Jon

Ah, don't worry Larry -- I had a little bit of an internal mini tantrum today when I found out that Hayley's Christmas CD isn't being stocked by almost every CD store in Australia -- I looked at the CD racks and Hayley outclasses so many of them ... Anway.... My feeling exactly Jillian !!!! Marianne just made me delete the post I just made. It was somewhat more extreme. Graeme

Unofficial (but reliable) reports suggest that Susan Boyle sold 412,000 copies of her debut album in the UK last week. This beats by a considerable margin (35,000) the previous highest ever sales for a debut album by anyone in the UK, previously held by Leona Lewis. She will obviously be no. 1. Estimates for the US suggest a first week sales there of somewhere over half a million... so a million between those two Countries alone is certainly possible. We will probably have to wait until Wednesday for the US figure (there, today's sales will be included) Whatever you think of her, this is a phenomenal result. Cheers, Dave

Susan Boyle has an hour long show on Wednesday 13 December at 7.00pm on ITV1 (GB) if anyone is interested in watching. | understand that this will be broadcast in the US although I have no details! Susan has personally invited Rhydian to perform on the show, one solo song plus maybe a duet. Talking Rhydian, I was in Sainsburys first thing this morning to buy his album O Fortuna. No sign of it on the shelves and I had to get the assistant to go into the stockroom to bring some through!!! Now having played the album in its entirety have to say that it really is brilliant - especially the tracks he sings in Latin!

Hugely successful album it certainly is - but here are a few words of caution about Susan Boyle, from Music Week.

i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif On the TV news in NZ tonight they mentioned that Susan is the fastest selling debut female artist with 2 million albums sold in the first week. She is number one in NZ (45000 which they think is a record), Australia and Ireland. They also say that she may be number one in the USA and Canada shortly.
