Yes Jeff,
If we all refused to listen to any singer who is not as good as Hayley, I can't imagine who would be left!

I wouldn't be surprised if Susan actually pitched her voice electronically/robotically for this album. Everyone expects too much from her anyway.

I'm not really sure anyone expects too much of her, Anshita, honestly. I think the attraction is still very much about who she is (And what she looks like) at least as much as how she sounds. Kind of 'supporting the Everywoman' if you get me.
I could be completely wrong, of course, but I don't think any of Susan's listeners are expecting a truly GREAT voice. I know I don't (Being a Hayley fan, the bar is set very high, there!).

Discussion moved from Proms in the Park, Belfast by Richard...So when I hear I Dreamed A Dream I want to hear the broken life in the song. Hayley has become very good at portraying that, but Susan related to the song on such a personal level that I could easily believe it had been written for her and about her life.
For me, that is true authenticity Elliot, I think you are contradicting yourself here. You say you want to hear the broken life in the song - this is a song sung by Fantine at the time she is dying of consumption and is looking back on her life and wondering where it all went wrong - so yes, the song is very much about a broken life, so I don't understand how it can seem to have been written for someone who's life we know very little about I have seen Les Miserables quite a few times, including back in the late 1980's when Fantine was played by Patty LuPone and "I Dreamed A Dream" has always been one of its most memorable songs for me. It is true that many songs can be interpreted and sung in different ways according to a particular mood - Hayley is a master at that and I would be interested to hear her viewpoint on whether or not "I Dreamed A Dream" is such a song because I don't believe it is. I have never liked Susan Boyle so I was not aware that a verse is missing from her version of the song despite having heard her sing it, but I agree with Dave that NO song should be tampered with in that way, least of all this one! I first heard Hayley sing it on her Live in New Zealand DVD and was completely blown away by her performance despite her young age. I had to wait until Kings Lynn last year to hear Hayley sing it live and I was once again mesmerised by Hayley's presentation. I doubt anyone will surpass her in my book. Best wishes Grant

Dave, There is a duet on YouTube that Susan did with Elaine Paige ( I Know Him So Well) which may answer the 'can Susan do delicate' question for you. It's actually rather good, at least IMO . *** Grant, No contradiction, I assure you. I can hear in the voice how far someone is living the song. As with acting, the difference between someone who has become the role and someone who is portraying it is easily apparent. I don't really see why I would have to know anything about Susan herself to hear how she feels when she's singing the song. Everything that needs knowing is in her voice.

I don't really see why I would have to know anything about Susan herself to hear how she feels when she's singing the song. Everything that needs knowing is in her voice. I believe Hayley 'lives' every song that she sings and is the reason she feels she has to understand what she is singing before she performs it. But "I Dreamed A Dream" is a story - a very old and very famous story - about a life that is sometimes happy and very often desperately sad. 'Belting it out' as I think you suggest Susan Boyle does, doesn't work with the lyrics for me - even with the verse missed out which, thinking about it, relates to one of the stories happier moments anyway. I just can't see her version as authentic - sorry Best wishes Grant

I just can't see her version as authentic - sorry Best wishes Grant I nowhere suggested that 'belting it out' had anything to do with the case. In fact I've been clear throughout that it's the depth of emotional connection I value most. I fear you must have me confused with someone else. I suspect we simply hear different things in the song and in the singers' voices, Grant, so that we will never agree. Such is life, I suppose

Actually I think Susan can do delicate. Have a listen to her version of the Rolling Stones "Wild Horses" available on YouTube (but is commercially available so I can't like to it here).
