It's unfortunate that the U S can't recognize a talent when they see one. After singing in the nations capitol last July 4th Hayley didn't get the slightest amount of recognition. It's nice to see the Taiwanese appreciate a great talent. My country ,I'm sorry to say has really been dumbed down.

Well at least you have Hayley in your country. Also she sells out a lot of venues. I have been to the U K many times and believe me you folks are a lot more sophisticated then the folks in the U S. Granted your youngsters are just as nutty as ours; but your adults are certainly more discriminating than ours. I can't find a radio station in St Louis that isn't rap or country. Also the best women actors in the U S are Brits.
I'm a proud American veteran; but I guess we're just too young. After all you're country has had many more years to acquire taste.

Hi Larry and Martin, From an outside perspective I would agree that it seems the UK and Europe is much more cultured in respects to appreciating Opera and "the Arts" than USA is. But I wouldn't know much because I haven't been to either country yet...just what I have perceived so far. And New Zealand being a much "younger" country than USA...we may have somehow come up with Hayley, but the desirable "tastes" we are referring to are VERY lacking here too.. If Hayley wasn't a Kiwi I doubt touring here would be very profitable. Maybe that's why Hayley hasn't paid much attention to Australia? They would be a comparable country to NZ. Jono EDIT: To add something on topic...I was also glad to see the response she got from the Taiwanese! Those countries seem to really appreciate "real music" such as classical, and brilliant vocals like Hayley. What music is prevalent in New Zealand? Like the U S New Zealand is primarily a country of immigrants; however I think from an ethnic point of view it is far less eclectic than the U S.

Larry Larry, I would agree that USA is probably more culturally mixed than here. In Auckland we have a big mix of cultures, but not as prevalent around the rest of the country. I think New Zealand mirrors the tastes of the popular scene of the rest of the world. Which at the moment mostly means Hip Hop, and Pop. Concerts like Lady Gaga, and Justin Timberlake are extremely fast sell outs. With the older generations I would say the preference would be to rock music...we have 2 ACDC concerts going on sale next Tuesday, and my bets are that they will sell within the day of going on sale. There is also a strong emphasis on promoting Home Grown music here. I think it does fairly well, but doesn't beat the interational market. Of course there are those that appreciate classical music here too... and we have sufficient events to accomodate them. With my age group this genre seems non-existant, but that could be similar all around the world. Jono EDIT: Sorry there is always something I think of after I post. By older generations liking Rock Music I meant 35-50s... I'm also a fan of rock music, but even that seems to be dying out in my age group. I went down to see Eric Clapton at a winery last year (or maybe 2007), and I swear me and my friend were the only people under 40 there!  . With even older generations I'm not sure, my grandmother recently bought a Christian country album..lol. |

Hi Jono and Larry, I do agree that Hayley's style and voice seems to be very much appreciated in parts of the Far East, and this all of six years after she she sold a lot of "Pure" CDs there... including in Taiwan if I remember correctly. I think this is remarkable and it is very good news for Hayley's future career.  But let's remember this thread is about the Taiwan concert, there are plenty of other more suitable threads for discussions about Hayley's career in the rest of the World!  Cheers, Dave |

Jason Lai (born 1974) is a British born Chinese orchestral conductor.
He was assistant conductor of the BBC Philharmonic from 2002 to 2005.
