Christchurch only gets 600mm of rain per year ( 2 feet ). The wettest area is Fiordland which gets 8m of rain ( 26 feet ).

300mm is considerably more than I've had for all of this year to date! Dave I don't know how much Seattle's had... a lot, but I don't think it's ever that much all at once! We do get sudden, heavy downpours, but they're usually just passing storms, and the rest is just plain rain. LOL I notice that Seattle's temps are often quite similar to the UK's (worldwide temps. are posted on the back of the Seattle Times). London is usually around the same as ours, though sometimes higher, sometimes lower. Not always, though! Lately it's been a bit balmier and sunnier in the UK lately than Seattle. I can tell by some of your pics of spring flowers and such, and of course Hayley's own pic of spring flowering trees and sun. Yes, both are on or near the western edge of their continent and westerly winds dominate, London just north of the 49th. parallel and Seattle just south of it. Vancouver is a slightly closer match to London being a bit further north but Seattle isn't far away either, weather-wise - slightly warmer both in summer and in winter if I recall correctly so there will be many days when it's much the same. I haven't checked but I suspect that Christchurch NZ is fairly similar too - albeit on the east coast and a long way from any continental landmass, but everything is of course the other way round in those parts! Cheers, Dave

Richard, I see the LibDems have written our Eurovision song this year. It's called "Never give up on EU !" To be fair it's not bad, written by former 2013 Danish winner Emmelie de Forest but I think even if Abba wrote us a song, we still wouldn't win. Lucie is 20/1 to win. She's also 20/1 to finish last. I think I know which bet I prefer !!

I have no words to fully express how I feel about the tragedy in Manchester. I shall be praying for all those affected and their families.

we do seem to be living in a time of an unusual madness among the human species, they seem set on a path of self destruction.

One of the many who were murdered was an 8 year old girl, Saffie Rose who was attending the concert of her favourite singer with her mum and sister, they are in hospital injured. Many more tragic stories will come out of this horrible horrible tragedy. I used to work in Manchester and know it well. RIP all those who were murdered.

Yes, I too have worked in Manchester. I don't think half the people on the media realise the stuff they are spouting, so great is the shock. An utterly evil act, conducted by barbarians. Thoughts and prayer are with the families affected. I live in hope that we will find a way stop these things from happening, but I'd better shut up before I say something stupid or blame the wrong people as those in the public eye are never slow to do.

Unusual madness? It doesn't seem so unusual in this day and age unfortunately. At any given time, in the past and the present, all around the world, there is some sort of horrific madness going on. One thought that often occurs to me is that it was only 70+ years ago that some of the worst "madness" that I know of occurred. I mean, my dad has been alive that long, so that is very recent. Especially when you consider how long the world has been around, it's actually pretty recent, and it's very scary to think that such evil happened that recently in history, and makes you think it could easily happen again. So, given that humanity has been known for all manner of madness all throughout history, and also given certain events that have transpired in the last 15+ years, or even the last few months, it really isn't a surprise that this would happen, unfortunately.

The tragedy in Manchester was a calculated attack on our most vulnerable. Sending healing thoughts and prayers to all affected.

Unless she was out late somewhere, she was probably at home, possibly in bed, when it happened. She might not even know until she wakes up this morning! I don't think she lives quite that close to the London Bridge. Hope all our London fans are safe. And the rest of you will continue to stay safe, always.

Six members of the public killed and 48 injured. All three terrorists were shot dead by police at the scene near London Bridge.
Guess where I was planning to go today?

I was at home about ten miles away when the latest attack happened. I've marked myself as safe on Facebook. Richard
