Thanks for you comments guys. I have finally got round to having a look at the photos earlier in this thread, and there are some wonderful ones there. Looks like some good candidates for the next photography comtetition (if there is one). I knew Steve, who sat beside me snapping away was doing good work, not forgetting Grant, Graham and Paddy, all very close. This probably means all the photos were taken from much the same angles and distance, as were mine. Roger, I think you misunderstood me and it is my fault, since I typed 100K, not 100M. It is Photobucket's 100M limit that causes me hassle, since most of my vidoes, even after processing are bigger than that. They start out as WVGA 848x480 pixels at 30fps, and saved in Quicktime (.MOV) format. The quality of these is normally very good. Some are more than 500M though. I then add the captions and stills etc and save them as mpg, but many are still over 100M So I have to add a second compression stage, which messes up the quality. ending up with .avi files. (My camera will also do HD, but duration is limited to less than 3 minutes, not long enough for most of Hayley's songs). I am currently uploading one that did not need the compression to .avi. It is 97M!!! But should be much better quality. Dave seems to manage to get superb quality within the 100M limit, and I don't know how he does it. Anyway, it is finally uploaded now, so here it is. I think this one should be much better. A fine performance by Hayley, and another example of Hayley's endearing "penguin" dance. Martin

Seriously though, you may have noticed that all the HD files I recently uploaded exceed 100MB, even though I always use the lowest bitrate I think I can get away with without significant degradation showing up. HD files - and even high quality SD files like yours, well they simply eat bytes and bandwidth. I'd have liked to double the bitrates for the HD videos (and I could have done) but it's always a balancing act when the Internet is involved, you don't want to lock too many people out of being able to download the files.... or spend all night uploading them! The trick though is to use lossless compression during the editing process, so my first job is to convert the initial 'lossy' files into the huffyuv codec. This means that immediately, you are dealing with many gigabytes of video for every single edit (each song from the World Games was around 3 to 5 gigabytes when expanded into huffyuv and some were more). But that creates a new problem as most PCs hard drives are not then fast enough to play the video files smoothly, saving and copying takes for ever, and disk space disappears like nobody's business. Finally, when everything is complete, you convert it into the finished product at whatever bitrate you will be using for the Internet. Feel free to raise a (or continue any existing) thread about this in Technical Support, if you wish. I enjoyed Scarborough Fair (the first I've had time to view any), it's very good! Cheers, Dave PS My "World Games" folder on the PC ended up at 144 GB in size - there is much culling of losslessly compressed files to be done!

Hey Martin,
Thanks for the videos!
In the Scarborough Fair video does she look at the camera and smile?? Or is she looking at someone near you? (@ 1:28 remaining)

(@ 1:28 remaining) Jono Hi Jono, I think Hayley tends to concentrate when she's actually singing. At about 1;28 remaining, she certainly looks in our direction and gives a special little smile ... maybe for us? We were all together in the front row, with Graham and me nearest to Hayley. Only two more days ... and hopefully 'Hi guys!' and more smiles ....... Weeeeeeeeeee! or is it KiiiiiiiiWiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! Paddy

Hi Jono In the Scarborough Fair video does she look at the camera and smile?? Or is she looking at someone near you? (@ 1:28 remaining) I noticed the smile and meant to comment on it. We were all sitting in a fairly large group at the front and martin's camera was just behind my right shoulder. It certainly looks to me as though it was smiling at our group. Best wishes Grant

Right, here is the next one. This one did need secondary compression, but not to the same extent as the first two, so the quality is OK. Thanks for the technical advice Dave. I don't think my editing package, Videopad, can save lossless, the save options seem very limited, although I am using the free version so it is possible the commercial version is better. I just try all the save options, except avi that seems to use a codec I don't have and haven't been able to get, then compress again using "Super" if the resulting file is still too big. This next one used Super's "Top Quality" setting. I think I need some better software! As for Hayley's little smile, if you like to see her looking at the camera then try this next one. Perhaps the smile was when she realised what I was doing, and this is the next song she sang, when she seemed to keep bringing her eyes back to the camera. Once again, this is a very beautiful performance. Caccini's Ave Maria.

Hi, Martin
Thank you very much for your excellent concert video clips, and I enjoy them too. Sound on the clip seems fine, but video becomes distorted in a larger size on the screen in the flv format. You have mentioned how big the video clip occurs. I wonder if I can watch those video clips with bigger file size.
BTW, I really appreciate your welcome. Yes, Oakland is one of three major int'l airports in the Bay Area, and the one much close to where I live is San Francisco Int'l Airport. I believe you did visit S.F. also.

OK, time for some more. Firstly Danny Boy. I love the way Hayley sings this. This one is stright from the editor, so no secondary compression, but with a reduced "average" bitrate which reduced the file size from 130M to 87M. (It is also possible to reduce "maximum bitrate", and I'm not sure whether that is a better option). Reducing bitrate hurts quality, but I don't think that this one is too bad. And as you may know, I cannot bring myself to disappoint a lady. So, Libby, here at last is Jerusalem. As Steve mentioned earlier though, the lighting in the second half didn't do we photographers any favours, at times Hayley appears to have two black eyes! But the good news is that it is at maximum quality that my editing software can produce, the same as Scarborough Fair. And Hayley's performance is magnificent. Hope you enjoy it. Martin
