I know this is a classical forum for the most part. Does anyone here listen to anything else other then classical? If so what are your favorite bands/singers? I wanted to see what everyone else had for other music variety outside of the classical relm. Mine are -Hayley of course -Serj Tankian - System of a down - Avril Lavigne - Nightwish - Linkin Park - Simon and Garfunkle - Beatles - Panic of the disco - Bob Segar - Chevelle - News boys -Barlow girl

Hi light21,
Hayley is much more than a classical singer. She is every bit as much into folk, as well as light pop, gospel, and musical theatre. I think most Hayley fans have wide tastes, and in any case with Hayley, as has been mentioned before it is very much "the singer, not the song" that attracts us.
But for me, I rate
Pink Floyd Yes Incredible String Band Led Zeppelin The Who
So I am by no means only a classical music fan, although I will admit to attending more live classical concerts than any other genre.

I'll just list the top 20 or so artists I am listening to most at the moment who are not Classical/Crossover. Keeps it easier. This is nowhere near the number of artists I listen to, mind, but I don't want to be writing lists all week Taylor Swift (Country/Pop) Alex Roots (Pop/Rock) The Gaslight Anthem (Rock) Tiffany Page (Rock/Pop) The Quireboys (Rock) Alexz Johnson (Folk) Sarah Solovay (Indie/Rock/Pop) Mishka (Reggae) The Divine Comedy (Kinda unique ) Eliza Doolittle (Ditto!) Marina & The Diamonds (Pop/Indie) Asia (Um... Synth Rock?) Carrie Underwood (Country/Pop) RATT (Metal) Raygun (Rock) Miley Cyrus (Pop/Rock) Gloriana (Country/Rock) Dakota (Rock) Edei (Soul) Lauren Alexander (Country) Some of these people are very new and have no albums out yet; others are long established and have many albums out. I like a good mix of old and new, as well as many genres (For the curious, if I included CC, both Hayley & Faryl would obviously be on that list

Any love for The Pretty Reckless, Rory? Have to admit, I adore them, myself.
If I updated my list, they'd be somewhere close to the top.

After a bit of thought, Rory, I'd have to say Zombie is probably the best intro song to their overall sound. They're very good at the Rock Ballad side as well, though, and Under The Water represents their sound very well, there... So either of those two, really

Nice. I really like Zombie, the acoustic version was cool too. That's a low voice for a woman! lol and quite soulful too which is rare for that mainstream sort of 'nu-rock' kind of sound. I'd recommend you check out Crow and the Butterfly by Shinedown if you haven't heard it. I think you'll like it -Rory

Taylor has a very strong, very versatile voice. First time I heard her, I was just blown away. She really gets to showcase that on Zombie, too. TPR are my favourite Rock band to come along this century so far (Despite some fierce competition from The Burning Crows), and that's mainly down to her incredible voice. Early hours of the morning where I am now, so I'll check Shinedown in the morning (IE the morning morning, when my neighbours won't complain at the noise! ) EDIT: Shinedown. Yeah, pretty good. Well worth a listen. Thanks, Rory

My list now being a few years old, I think it might be worth an update. As before, I'll list the top 20 or so artists I am listening to most at the moment who are not Classical/Crossover. Be interesting to see who I still listen to regularly - and who I don't. Taylor Swift (Country/Pop) Alex Roots (Pop/Rock) Tiffany Page (Rock/Pop) Sarah Solovay (Indie/Rock/Pop) Marina & The Diamonds (Pop/Indie) Fuzzbox (Pop) Dee Snider (Rock covers of Broadway songs. As awesome as it sounds!) The Pretty Reckless (Hard Rock) Joss Stone (Soul) The Darkness (Metal) Emma Bunton (Pop. Sort of) Fragile Tom (Rock) The Burning Crows (Rock) Natalie Imbruglia (Indie) Lene Marlin (Indie) Amelia Lily (X-Factor stuff, NOT her singles!!!) Deuce (Pop) Plus a huge Motown compilation I've got that is seeing a lot of playing right now

Glad you enjoyed that! Your list is very interesting. I'm a bit fascinated by how few of the names I recognize, being a rocker myself. I guess it just shows how diverse the genre can be (although your list wasn't just rock, I'm aware). I've been getting really into Styx lately, myself. They manage to combine rock, prog, blues, pop - maybe more - and still sound easily digestible. It's a bit ironic, because my parents (who are at the age to have been Styx fans in the bands heyday) both somewhat dislike them lol, while I like them more with each listen

I am quite good at finding up & comers before they come to general attention, Rory The ones you may not know: Alex Roots is currently at Uni. She did a few songs but for some reason her album never got released. Her songs are ridiculously infectious, and Adrenaline Rush is one of the best songs of this century so far, IMO. Tiffany Page has a very Blues-Rock sound, which her last record company didn't seem to know how to handle, as she's NOT bland Pop or R&B and doesn't auto-tune her voice to death. Still, hopefully the new ones are better. She's an incredible talent. Sarah Solovay is kinda like Michelle Branch's younger, Rockier, sister. Same confessional style of New York song writing, same amazing guitar skills - and arguably a better voice. She's had two EPs out, but is mostly busy with Uni right now. Fantastically talented singer/songwriter/guitarist. Fragile Tom are German, and they have a very deep, dark, sound that I love. Not sure they've had an album out yet, either, but it's surely only a matter of time. The Burning Crows are a bit like a new version of the Quireboys - high energy, very upbeat Rock. My favourite modern Rock group who are not The Pretty Reckless (Taylor wins on voice! ). First album out very soon. The rest are all famous, old, or Amelia Lily! Amelia has a fantastic voice and incredible singing ability, but unfortunately she seems to have signed with a label who have zero idea of what to do with her, if her singles are any indication. Auto-tuned to death would be the nice version. My full opinion of what's been done to Amelia would not make for fit reading on any family website. Still love her X-Factor performances, though.
