Compilation discs turn me right off. They're a cop-out, being commercial as opposed to being creative.

But one cannot really argue with music that sets out to unite people across cultural barriers.

This disc, subtitled The Official Album of Rugby World Cup 2007, does that, and powerfully, too.

It's a compilation that can be commended for two reasons, at least, one of which is as a reminder of another momentous late-20th century meeting, high art (so-called) opera reaching to millions via the art and heart of our dearly departed Luciano Pavarotti. What bridges he built.

Then there is the artistry of Phil Coulter, whose anthem to his united country, Ireland's Call, while not his greatest song, is a good one, designed for rugby but big on soul.

The essence of the phrase is Coulter's mark.

That's where the gods and mortals meet -- and if ever the two met it was in the art of Coulter.

These soul-stirring anthems, cries from the heart, come from big names: Celtic Tenors, Russell Watson, Kathleen Jenkins in a ripping Bread of Heaven, Hayley Westenra, Roberto Alagna, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Bryn Terfel and many others. Go grab the CD and be suitably stirred.
