Belinda & Rodders, Are these sprouting up all over New Zealand? Should we be planting a row in Sloane Terrace, SW1? Hayley Westenra
Sensational new Hybrid Tea named in honour of New Zealand singing star Hayley Westenra to raise funds for UNICEF.
In Ghana, girls are expected to complete household chores before they can leave for school. Some have to walk 5-10 km - the long journey leaves them tired and vulnerable. Many girls cannot cope and drop out. Tasman Bay Roses is proud to be associated with Hayley Westenra in helping UNICEF to provide girls with an education.
For every rose purchased the sum of $4.00 will be sent to UNICEF NZ to buy bikes for girls in Ghana so they can get to school, as the distance between home and school discourages attendance.
Winter price: $22.50 (plus courier charge for mail orders).

Hi Drew.
Thanks for your information on the Hayley rose.
I have just dashed off the following email to the web address you gave.
"Whom are your agents in the UK?
What are the chances of a cut flower for 23rd September for a buttonhole for a Hayley concert that evening? Could be an order for a dozen or so if it is possible."
Peter

The United Nations Children's Fund - UNICEF - (The link will open in a new window.)Hi Drew, it sure is a nice rose.As to whether or not they are sprouting up here in NZ is concerned,I have at this point,no idea at all but I would imagine rose garden enthusiast would probably have one in their gardens. The Botanical Gardens here in Christchurch, may have some in their rose garden dept,I am not sure as I haven't been there for a while. When the weather breaks, I will go and check it out, Cheers, Rodders Christchurch NZ

Hi all,
I must say the Hayley rose is a gorgeous shade of [pink]pink[/pink]. Even better that every rose purchased is in aid of UNICEF.

Hello everybody! What a lovely idea, naming a rose after Hayley! I would certainly love to wear one at Cadogan Hall. Peter, I think you should order about 1,500, then everybody in the audience and the orchestra could wear one! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Best Wishes, Richard

Hi Rodders, I spent all last night trying to track down Christopher Warner. I think that he is an old grower (rose breeder) rather than a nursery which sells roses. I suspect that the internet has not caught up with him yet. He is mentioned in plenty of despatches and has written many books. I shall get to the bottom of this somehow. We cannnot have Cadogan Hall without the right colour of rose. This was the closest match that I could find. I suspect that both varieties contain similar DNA! rosesuk.com/rose_locator/roses/hybrid_tea_spiral_bud_form/768_isobel_derby.phpThis one might have inspired Il Divo.

Now could that be a bad translation of Odyssey? Thomas, can you pop into Hamburg and pick up 1500 of these on your way to Cadogan Hall.

Its one of my many failings, I'm often a better actor offstage than on! But then, 'All the world's a stage... Peter

Peter,
If you bought 1500 at £1.00 each and then sold them to the audience at £2.00 each, you could give £1495 to UNICEF and still have enough to buy a new casual blazer!

I don't know if i could manage it alone but while there would be a certain amount of financial risk (and any overs could always be presented to Hayley as a bouquet) I wonder if it would be worth doing it officially for UNICEF? The only other objection would be that I think it is a charity concert for something else, in which case it would not be the right thing to do.. Peter
