Since I haven't worked out how to start a new thread, at the risk of irritating Richard I'll post this here although I thought someone would have done so by now anyway !
BGT is like panning for gold. You have to sift through a lot of dross before something catches your eye. This performance was slightly marred by the fact that Lucy Kay didn't know who the composer was ! (Obviously never purchased "Paradiso!") Mind you neither did Mr Cowell but he did admit she saved the show. Up to that point it had been so dire he was about to go home !!
But of course we've been here before, haven't we ? Girls like Lucy don't win shows like this. I learned that lesson a long time ago when I spent a good few pounds voting for Faryl Smith. They say a fool and his money are soon parted but I won't be voting for Lucy in the final, although I wish her well. She's the best singer BGT has found since Faryl and may even be better.
This aria was made famous by the legendary Maria Callas and was a brave choice indeed for her audition. In case you're wondering, the woman in tears in the audience is her proud mum.

But the likely winners are these guys:
In tonight's semi-final watch out for Lettice Rowbotham. She's a rather posh violinist !

Here's Lettice Rowbotham sounding rather the worse for wear in her interview. It's fairly obvious what sort of artist she is! She can certainly play pizzicato, but can she play sober?!!! Richard

Thanks Richard. I enjoyed that. Lettice is a good laugh and if you catch her sober she's a great violinist ! She's been playing since the age of four and made the final last night although I preferred her audition which you linked to here. She just needs to take more water with it next time ! Shame about the dead animal round her neck though ! I'm glad Simon Cowell's face came on at the end . I've printed it out. I've been looking for a new cover for my dartboard although actually he has the sort of face you just want to punch and I'm sure some of the contestants think so too!

Psst ! Listen very carefully I shall say this only once ! There are 3 Frenchmen in the final who wear feathers and high-heeled shoes. Surely the wurst act cannot come furst ? As John McEnroe would say YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS ! Mind you if social media has mobilised the voting the way it did for Eurovision then they have a serious chance of winning but I hope not. I'm not posting a link to it. They may can can but as for liking them I can't can't !!

Hello Jeff! I can't wait for next year's Eurovision Song Contest. Ireland's entry is going to be sung by Chip O'Lata! Richard

I gather we still have a couple of acts from Leicester in there, (I'm told, I don't actually watch it) including the lovely Lucy. Perhaps they should call it Leicester's Got Talen1; Martin D

I'm finding the discussion in this thread rather amusing. LOL I notice Lucy's pronunciation of the words in Nella Fantasia seem different than what Chloe Agnew does, for example. It almost seemed more slurred, or less precise, but I don't know the language (I'm not even sure if it's Italian or Latin), so I can't tell for sure who's pronouncing it right. She does a nice job. She doesn't have to win to sell albums, if people like her. The group from AGT last year, Forte (with Fernando Varela), did very well with the CD they put out, and they were 4th place. Since I'm not crazy about opera in general, I probably wouldn't buy her album, but I wish her well. I at least find her easier to listen to than some others out there; she doesn't make the yawning sound half as much as others that I won't name. Oh, you guys don't have toll-free voting over there? Bummer!

I think I prefer the genuine Morricone approved English translation... Martin D

I think I prefer the genuine Morricone approved English translation... Martin D Actually, Ennio Morricone did approve the lyrics that Sarah Brightman wanted to sing to the piece. So, although he was reluctant about it, he did approve it. And anyway, I enjoy both versions. I've always especially enjoyed Chloe Agnew's version, because I've always liked the effect her fragile, innocent-sounding voice gave to it. Because of that, I find voices like Lucy's a bit heavy in comparison. I don't like it sounding operatic as well. However, I've just listened to Sarah Brightman's version, and I really, really like it. I've always liked and respected Sarah Brightman, but I'm sort of just now becoming more of a fan of hers.

Do an A/B on Sarah Brightman v Hayley on Scarborough /Fair. And report what you hear. Yes, I like Sarah, but Hayley blows her out of the water IMO.
