Don't forget that she recorded Over the Rainbow on her second NZ album MGTY. Over the Rainbow is, I must say, my least favorite song ever. I honestly think it is over sung by too many musicians. Don't get me wrong, I do like the song but I tend to be very picky about certain songs and this is one of them. The only way I could truly enjoy this song (other than Hayley's voice of course) is if she recorded it with the original intro: "when all the world is a hopeless jumble and the raindrops tumble all around/heaven opens a magic lane/when all the clouds darken up the skyway/there's a rainbow highway to be found/leading from your windowpane/to a place behind the sun/just a step beyond the rain"

Well, she DID sing that intro at Gwyl Gobaith (as you will see on my video). When she started singing it, it took me a while to realise what song she was singing. Yes, I can see where you are coming from, the song as been done to death. But Hayley's new version of it is different and special. And nothing like her MGTY version. Or the CW version with its stunning harmonies. So I make an exception for her.

Yes I like Hayley's version - there's actually a little history behind that intro. Only used in stage productions, these lost beginning verses eventually got the cut and didn't make it into most adaptations, and more critically, the movie version by Judy Garland. However, it was included in an obscure songbook. This verse was eventually picked up by Frank Sinatra and recorded on his first album from 1945 “The Voice of Frank Sinatra.” However, it was probably made most known by Doris Day, by making it part of her recording for her 1958 “Hooray for Hollywood!” album. It was also used by Ella Fitzgerald. Pretty cool! -Taylor i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

Well, it's not my least favorite song ever, but it's definitely not one of my favorites, either. Too old-fashioned, and I normally associate this with kids, because most of the time, it's kids or young people who sing it. Hayley recorded it when she was 14, and that's the kind of song you might expect from a new, young singer like she was then. But nowadays, no matter how gorgeous she can make it sound, this is not the type of song to put on an album, again, when you're 26. If she wants to be taken seriously, that is. I would expect this sort of song from the likes of Tayla Alexander. You expect these sorts of show tunes from them, because most of the time, they're too young to have any of their own material, and these songs are the kind that people who buy their albums might hope to hear. But when you've just barely finished promoting the more mature, elegant album of gorgeous movie themes and writing your own beautiful, and mature, lyrics to some of the tunes, you might not want to take yourself back in time with that sort of song. Sure, I can see her singing it Taiwan. They seem to appreciate this style more than the easily-bored Americans (and probably Brits/Europeans). The only way I'd tolerate it is if she did it more like Eva Cassidy did, but even that version is way over-done. Plus, I'm already holding out for that other Eva Cassidy song that some of us petitioned for 3 years ago.

Never liked Eva Cassidy's version, too jazzy and too many wrong notes (deliberate I'm sure) for my taste. But that goes for a lot of Eva's stuff. Love her voice, but less keen on her interpretation of many songs. When Hayley was 14, yes, she sang it the way you would expect. As a child's song. But nowadays she does it in a much more mature, and much more interesting way. I was blown away when I heard her do it live, one of the highlights of the show if not THE highlight. It showed a side of Hayley that is all new.

And of course she sings it in a more mature way now, because she is more mature. But the song itself is one that innocent young girls should put on their albums. I expect more love songs than this type of thing, from someone who's going to get married in the near future. If Hayley wants it on her album, then I won't complain too much if that's what she likes, but I'll be expecting all the other songs to amazing enough to make up for it. But I'm just afraid what would happen is, as usual, only the well-known cover songs will get promoted by Decca, and not her original ones. That's what happened with Treasure, and if Over the Rainbow were to be one of the promoted songs, then I have to say they couldn't expect very big sales figures to come in. Unless, as I said, there are other more impressive songs to make up for it. I'm afraid I have pretty high expectations for this album. I'm expecting nothing less than the best from her. And at this point, I'm afraid I expect more from her than an over-done show tune. I suppose BOTW is somewhat overdone, but this is a deeper, more emotional song. But who knows, maybe none of these songs will be on it. Remember, she doesn't always record songs she sings live. She never recorded From a Distance, now did she? Though I would have loved to hear it.

Oh my goodness Martin D and Libby, for me, Eva Cassidy's "Over The Rainbow" is THE definitive version! I love it to bits - and not least because it was one of the song/versions that led me to Hayley and her music! In fact, I'm going to dig out that first Eva album I bought so I can play it, right now. The other, by the way, was Eva's Fields of Gold... not to mention "I Know You By Heart" which I was asking for quite a while before Hayley first performed it.
Hayley's more traditional version of OTR as sung at Gwyll Gobaith is pretty cool, too!
Eva's wonderful delicacy of tone in places is reminiscent of what Hayley can do and of course, I love that too. When Hayley does Eva songs, I just melt.

What's "From a Distance"? Yeah, Over the Rainbow is a bit overdone, in general, but I think Hayley's would outdo our expectations (as she usually does), But you know what I think might be even better (and less overdone)? "Whistle Down the Wind." It has SO many unexplored possibilities, and from the single grainy YT video of Hayley singing it, I am confident she could "blow us away!" :je But seriously, I believe she would do something amazing with it. -Taylor i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

From a Distance is by Judy Collins. It was made famous by Bette Midler's version. I did not know Hayley sang this song before, I love this song. For some of these older tunes I don't think it is necessary to put them in an album. But I still want to hear them. Singing them live in a concert is where they belong. To me new materials should be the focus of an album and concert DVDs is where you put a mixture of new and old. I wish she would release more concert DVDs though... YouTube is great but the quality is very inconsistent.

I have to say I totally agree with Dave, Eva's version is the best one, I think her versions of songs are usually the best. But i suppose it depends if you like a more jazzy, blues type style. I think eva's strength is her expression, which is hayley's strong point too. However, if Hayley were going to cover Eva I would rather hear I Know You By Heart. I like over the rainbow I think it is a very uplifting song and I don't see it as a young persons song I think it could apply to anyone and didn't katherine Jenkins do a version when she was about 26? Actually I think it would suit hayley better because she has a lighter voice and not so operatic. I also like From a Distance.

YouTube is great but the quality is very inconsistent. Agree with everything you said! New material is what we want; not necessarily ALL of it written by Hayley (but that would be wonderful), because some could be songs written for her, like Across the Universe of Time was for Pure, or at least songs that no one's ever heard before, like Who Painted the Moon Black? However, a few cover songs are fine. Like I Know You By Heart and BOTW. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifI like Eva's version better, but I get so bored whenever anyone chooses this song, no matter how nicely they sing it. It just doesn't do anything for me. On the talent shows, it's usually a case of way too much charm, and that just doesn't appeal to me. The contestants I like are more unique and original. And that song isn't either one of those things. Hayley is very charming in a good way, of course. But there are just some songs that, no matter how gorgeous Hayley's rendition is, I'm just not going to go wild over. That's just me, I guess. Hayley sang From a Distance on her tour with Il Divo. I wasn't able to go, unfortunately, but I regret it miserably.

From a Distance? Is that the song Cliff Richard recorded one Christmas? Didn't realise Hayley had sung it. Or perhaps I've forgotten. I'm sure she would do a fantastic job. And yes, it's not that I dislike Eva Cassidy, I've got three of her albums I think. But I would rather hear Hayley than Eva, and that goes for every song they have both done. I once saw a performance of Over the Rainbow, which is a musical about Eva's life, starring Zoe Tyler who was very good as Eva. In fact for me there are very few songs that Hayley has done that anyone else does better. Dulaman is I think one. And perhaps some of the stuff on her pre-Pure albums that she has not resurrected since.

Yes, Dulaman was one of those songs that she sounded too chirpy in, yet Maev does not. It just suits Maev's (and Lynn Hilary's) tone better.

on the subject of the new album being called Lullabies (for adults)
I suppose Bridge over Troubled water could be considered an adult lullaby.
How about You've got a friend as another track on the album (Just guessing)
Maybe Angel of the Morning.
Sometimes when we touch.
Anyone else got any guesses at tracks that might be considered as lullabies for adults ?

Just found this tidbit from the blog of Painted Black (who provided the dresses for the photoshoot). There is this dress listed on their website as a 1950's cocktail dress. Perhaps this is the one? It's been marked as sold too. www.paintedblack.co.uk/products/50s-amazing-cocktail-dress-size-8Well picked by Libby who also chose it from Painted Black's website earlier: I looked at the Painted Black's website, and I "chose" this one for Hayley. I don't know about the photo shoot, but in general, I think it's the prettiest, and would suit Hayley very well.
