Absolutely, that's an important part of what sets Hayley apart for me. Not just her fabulous voice, but the way that she seems to live the songs that she sings.
Watching God Defend New Zealand, I felt her pride in and love for her country was there to see in her eyes, and she has very expressive eyes. Most at Eden Park would not have been close enough to see that. But that is what she does. Sometimes, when I have been well back from the front of concerts, I have only noticed that side of her performance when I played back videos I had made - the camera captures what I can't see because I was too far away - what a wonderful thing is the zoom lens.
Elizabeth is a fine singer for sure. We have some friends who visited New Zealand last year, and while they were there saw Elizabeth perform live. They thought she was wonderful.

........ including the quality of the singing itself and the emotion put into it and displayed. Put simply, Hayley just nailed it - ....... As I have said before, I think Hayley's performance on this occasion is one of the very best renditions of any National Anthem I have ever heard at any major sporting event broadcast on TV.
................. But Hayley managed to produce that extra something that is hard to define, she raised her performance to the next level and I cannot imagine any singer in the World doing better on this occasion.
Cheers, Dave Well said Dave! It's Hayley's willingness to show emotion, particularly in situations like the Rugby World Cup, the Christchurch Memorial Service and the Washington Memorial Day Concert (which I feel a lot of singers deliberately avoid) which makes her special and able to produce that extra something. With many performers the lack of emotion shown gives the impression that they're "just doing their job" With Hayley, you think "Yes, she was with us in our grief or our excitement, she was part of it - not detached". That's not something easily forgotten. Best wishes Grant Quite agree Dave. I think the majority of people in NZ thought it was a fantastic rendition. Should do wonders for her tour of NZ.

Yes, it's a superb photo, Ross - and thanks Jillian for posting it! A perfect demonstration of the difference between a digital SLR camera with a huge and expensive telephoto lens in the hands of a skilled photographer, and a camera-phone or point and shoot. Completely impossible with the latter. Even so, it would be very difficult to focus the digital SLR accurately, the photographer, who was probably on the touchline, would have to be very quick because Hayley and the All Blacks were moving, and the gap is tiny! He may well have fired off 10 shots in a second to get it. Cheers, Dave

Well, I didn't know she was saying "love will fall" until I got the lyrics book in the Japanese version.

Yes, the Kiwi accent is sometimes difficult.

No, it wasn't about an accent at all. Sometimes if you don't know the lyrics to a song, you can't always understand what words are. Sometimes it's because they're phrased differently than when people are actually talking, whether they're Kiwi or Scottish, or whatever. Hayley's accent isn't as noticeable in her singing as it used to be. I always understand Hayley when she's talking. I did have trouble understanding Jai McDowall's Scottish accent in a recent video, which is why I mentioned Scottish. I can understand his singing quite well, though.

I agree Libby I don't think her accent is as strong in her singing as it once was... and with Jai- I've never been very good at understanding Scottish accents! best wishes Sing
