I am not normally interested in such sports, but I am interested in what teams make it to the final, the All Blacks in particular. So, could we post any important results in this thread? It would just be nice to keep track of how everybody's doing, especially the All Blacks. I'm sure I could look it up, but I'm sure many of you are rugby fans, and wouldn't mind discussing the RWC. Thanks!

Hi Libby, Thanks for starting this thread!! I'm a huge rugby fan and will be following the World Cup very closely from here in the US. I'll be glad to post results. The All Blacks played their first match of the group stage tonight, defeating Tonga 41-10. Their next match comes up on September 16th when they take on Japan. The top two finishers in each group qualify for the single-elimination knockout round beginning on October 7th, and culminating in the Final on October 23rd, which of course we all are looking forward to for more than just a great match! Matt

Okay, so I guess I don't need to check back until next Friday.. or is it Thursday? The 16th in NZ, or the UK? I got confused about which day the Cup actually started, wasn't sure if it was the 9th our time or NZ time.
Oh, I guess I'm interested in how the US team does, too. What is our team called?

Hi Libby, The matches all take place on the same day everywhere from New Zealand (2nd half of the day) across to Europe (1st half of the day). The evening matches are also on the same day for the Eastern USA - very early on that same day! But in Western States where you are, some of the "early" matches will be before midnight - in the late evening of the previous day. The next All Blacks match kicks off at 8pm on Friday the 16th NZ time, 9 am UK time, 1 am Friday for you I suspect. The first USA match is a couple of hours earlier in the day than that, on Sunday the 11th for most people but for you, 11pm on Saturday night I think. If it's easier for you to work back from UK time, here is the ITV match schedule (UK times) for the whole competition: www.itv.com/rugbyworldcup/2011/matches/I have amended the thread title slightly, to make it clearer that this is to discuss the Rugby side of things. I don't really want to watch the games, just to check whether certain teams win or not. I don't have enough patience for games like that.

Hey Libby, The US team is called the Eagles, and they will be playing their first match on Sunday. The start time is 6:00 PM in New Zealand, which means that it will kick off at 11:00 PM PDT (Saturday night) here on the west coast. NBC will be carrying a tape-delayed broadcast on Sunday morning beginning at 10:00 AM. I will probably be one of the very few Americans who will forsake watching the NFL that morning in order to watch rugby. My NFL team (Chargers) doesn't play until later anyways. Hope that info helps!!! And to our English friends reading this, congrats on winning your first match vs. Argentina. Just finished watching it! Matt

Yes Matt there's nothing like a relaxing start to the weekend is there ?! If Argentina kicked all their penalties, England would have lost. Mind you Jonny Wilkinson missed a few as well. We'll have to improve to give the All Blacks something to worry about. (BTW we're all thinking of America this weekend. Puts sport into context. )

Yes Jeff, I have to agree.
Based on that performance, the All Blacks would have us for breakfast!

I see the US is playing Ireland. So, if the US loses, what happens? Looking at the link Dave provided, I see the US is playing several times. I don't really understand how these things work. Do they just see what everybody's scores are at the end, and rank them from there? Somehow? I would kind of like to see NBC's coverage, if only to see if I can hear Hayley's song or not. It would be nice to hear it on US TV! But I will be getting ready for church then, so I'll have to record it, or find it online later.

Hi Libby there are 20 teams in the World Cup and they are grouped into 4 pools of five teams. The teams in a pool play each other and the top two teams advance into the quater-final stage.

Hi Libby,
They allocate points to each team in the pool depending on results. I've just looked it up for you. The way it works is
Win: 4 points Draw: 2 points Loss: 0 points
4 or more tries: 1 point Loss by 7 points or less: 1 point
When all the teams in the pool have played each other, the two teams with the highest number of points go through to the knockout stage (quarter finals.
If two teams have the same number of points at the end of the pool phase, the following criteria are applied in order to separate them.
1. The team which has the largest difference between points scored and points conceded is ranked higher.
2. The team with the largest difference between tries scored and tries conceded is ranked higher
3. The team which scored the highest total number of points in all pool matches is rated higher.
4. The team which has scored the most tried in all its pool matches is ranked higher.
5. If, after applying all of these, the situation is still unresolved, the team rated highest in the official world rankings will be ranked highest.
Hope this helps.

Hi everyone,
I'm enjoying the RWC so far- I love to see the all blacks haka and rugby playing of course! I think england played some shocking rugby in their first match- we need to get our act together if we're going to stand a chance against NZ. Wales played well I thought its a shame they lost.
