They may well have used a spellchecker, but it wouldn't have helped in this case: scarp is a perfectly good word in itself. It may be a word, but I doubt Hayley is planning to "form or cut into a steep slope" when she gets to NZ.

hi, this is pretty but hard to understand... www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-12668190basically, the red and blue bits moved away from the satellite. red is down, blue up. apparently, the ground in some places moved 50cm.... yikes stare at it and it all starts to make sense

It may be a word, but I doubt Hayley is planning to "form or cut into a steep slope" when she gets to NZ. You prove my point. The spellchecker doesn't know which meaning the writer intends. A good one has a limited amount of context checking but it can't fix everything. That's why you so often see errors like "to" instead of "too" or "winter's" instead of "winters".

Writing "scarp" instead of "scrap" is different than "to" and "too" because they aren't even pronounced the same way, whereas the "tos" are. And it looks more ridiculous in a news headline. I wonder if the writers ever realized their mistake.

On Friday 18th March all of Canterbury is having a public holiday so that people can go to a National memorial to be held in Hagley Park. Prince William is going to be there and he is also going to Queensland to see the people affected by the floods plus the families of the Pike River mine disaster. It doesn't sound like Kate is going.

More importantly, is there a chance Hayley could be there? Of course that's probably not the benefit concert, but maybe she'll still be there anyway.

I've seen itr stated in the news here that Kate is certainly not going. William is to visit the site of the Pike River mine, and also Queensland's flood affected areas, I'm sure Jillian will be pleased to know.
BTW there was a 7.2 earthquake in Japan today. Not much abot it in the news, since nobody appears to have been killed, although there was a small tsunami.

What are you correcting me on, spiderman? We don't know whether she has any other engagements on the 18th, so as far as we know, it's entirely possible. What's to correct (and yes, I hate it).

oh great, we are talking about so many dates im losing track... for those of you who wonder.... i do my schedule day by day.
yes the 18th is still open; but we know she has to be back in london on the 2nd.
we also know she was planning on a trip to NZ in april/ may
=3 trips in 6 weeks ... unless she stays on, which she cant cos she needs to see the moppets on the 2nd.
so i am correcting you after all... your day is ruined if you want it that way...

Okay, okay, so it's unlikely, but it's still not impossible. The 18th is about 2 weeks before the 2nd. That seems to leave plenty of time for getting back to London in time. And what on earth do you mean by the "moppets"? Just so you know, your so-called "corrections" are not going to ruin my day. Do you think I let a trivial thing like that ruin my day? I don't think so. And we'd better stop, because we're getting entirely too off-topic (and I'm not just saying that because I don't like your "corrections").

Hi All As tragic as it is, can all further posts relating to the earthquake and tsunami affecting Japan and surrounding countries be posted in another thread in this board so that this thread can continue to concentrate on the CH earthquake.
Thanks Martin

Hello Ross and Libby and everyone, We now have what appears to be the first media report stating that Hayley will attend and sing at the Christchurch memorial service on Friday 18th March. In today's News of the World in the UK, Dan Wootton's XS reports: The report implies that Dan Wootton is himself a Kiwi, which might explain why he has the news first, although I have no confirmation from Hayley, Bandana or other sources as yet. EDIT: This news was confirmed by Hayley herself in an LBC radio interview with said Dan Wootton and is now being widely reported in the media including BBC. The link I have posted asks for a login but I was able to access the report via a Google search for the first sentence. Here is a link to the National Memorial Service details on the earthquake website: canterburyearthquake.org.nz/2011/03/11/national-christchurch-memorial-service-faq/Dave

Thanks for the news Dave. I am pleased Hayley is going to be there. I will be at the memorial. The event is going to be televised so we will see Hayley sing. Here is a schedule of the day:- 11 am Music by NZ singers 12am public to be seated for start of memorial. 2 - 2:30pm Memorial concludes 2:3pm - 3:30pm more music
So hopefully Hayley will also be one of the singers before or after the event.
