Hayley's association with Celtic Woman

Hi Peter, Tony and everyone,

I suspect that Hayley's involvement with CW is a unique situation. That is, I cannot think of any solo performer from any musical genre who has joined an established group either permanently or on a part-time basis as Hayley has done while continuing to pursue his or her solo career. We therefore cannot be sure how it will pan out in the long term. The members of this forum, together with all of Hayley's supporters around the world are therefore on a fast learning curve and that, I suspect, is equally true of Hayley herself.

Meanwhile, I don't think we should make too many comparisons with her relationship with Katherine Jenkins, Il Divo and Celtic Woman. In the Pure Tour to which Peter refers, Katherine was Hayley's guest. In the Il Divo Tour, she was their guest. Now, she is a part of CW - a very different situation. Because of that, I wouldn't necessarily expect the promoters to say, "Celtic Woman in concert featuring Hayley Westenra" and more than they would say "Celtic Woman in concert featuring Lisa Kelly".

Having said that, I am delighted that Hayley is mentioned on the CW website and it is quite right that she should be. But to what extent is dependent upon her continued involvement with the group beyond the forthcoming US tour. That, as yet, is completely unknown - possibly even to Celtic Woman and Hayley. So, the latter part of this year and beyond could be very interesting for all concerned.

Hi everybody.
This doesn't belong to the earth shattering category but its had me wondering for weeks now.
If you look below you'll see an ordinary flickr member sheet.
But look at the red ringed photo & explain the number of visits to me. I can't, for the life of me.
The visitor is never me but an external person who's viewing that particular pic.
Compare the other pics & the visitings don't vary very much & suddenly.....as you see.

But of course they dont say which dates. And the quote "The original Celtic Woman members will also be joined by New Zealand singing sensation Hayley Westenra for some of these U.S. dates." This suggests that Hayley is a guest. the phrase "New Zealand singing sensation" differentiates Hayley from the rest of the group. In other words Hayley joining The original Celtic Woman members for some of these dates suggests this is a unique situation ...which may or may not be repeated in the future.

January 9, 2007- On February 14, star singing group Celtic Woman will launch their fifth U.S. tour since their 2005 debut. It is the culmination of a period of intense activity for the group that began back in October with the release of 'A Christmas Celebration' (Manhattan Records). Thats a total of 7 shows. I have a huge group event planned for NYC including 2 streach Limos to take the 20 of us in our group to the concet hall. Im looking forward to the tour but sad to say its looking like Hayley will only be at a few of the key venues for this tour. Ive been sayinfg all along that i thought that would be the case.

From what Ive been told from a source and the fact that one of our members recieved an email the first night of the PBS broadcast....i wont say where the email came from....but it suggested that (we presume) Hayley will be departing the tour around March 29th. If this infor is correct along with the infor we have from Roger then Hayley will be on tour with Celtic Woman for the following venues........

A most magnificent theatre. A wonderful experience indeed. It was a must on my first 'grand tour' of the States in my twenties.

Celtic Woman blends styles, Irish music
Show is Thursday night at Roanoke Civic Center - but it's sold out

Despite its singular name, Celtic Woman is actually six women -- five vocalists and a fiddler. David Downes, of Celtic Collections and the group's music director, selects their music but manages to showcase each artist's unique style.

From the hymnlike arrangements of familiar pop songs such as "Beyond the Sea" to other original arrangements by Downes of traditional Irish ballads, folk music and classical composers, Celtic Woman has as many styles as a rainbow has colors.

Their sound is popular enough to sell out at the Roanoke Civic Center, where the group will perform Thursday night.

The collection is a lively mix of Irish dance music, the sound of a medieval choir in a rural monastery, and traditional ballads. Especially haunting is the a cappella version of "Over the Rainbow."

"We all come from very different backgrounds in music," said Lisa Kelly, who sings solo on "A New Journey" track "The Blessing," released Jan. 30. Also released Jan. 30 was the DVD "A New Journey, Live at Slane Castle, Ireland."

"David chooses the music based on each of our personalities, but he is very approachable," Kelly said. "He will sit with us, and know what we are thinking, and some of the girls get to make their own arrangements."

Other Celtic Woman members are Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon, Meav Ni Mhaolchatha and Hayley Westenra, with Mairead Nesbitt on fiddle.

Kelly talked about the group's upcoming tour from Dublin, several days before Celtic Woman's departure for a promotional tour of Toronto, Boston and New York.

Kelly grew up in a musical household. Her parents met while they were both playing in a musical.

"There are very few professional shows in Ireland, but there is a huge amateur circuit," Kelly said. "My dad was always a big Barbra Streisand fan, and Mario Lanza, too. My interests just lay with musicals, and my parents were not into traditional music."

The first music she remembers listening to as a child was the Carpenters.

"Then I moved on to Madonna, which didn't make my father very happy," she said.

Before Celtic Woman, which formed in 2005, Kelly performed in shows such as "The Magic of Gershwin" and "The Music of Cole Porter" in Dublin's National Concert Hall.

"It's just so lovely to sing that kind of music," she said. "Something there is so meaningful, and in my range. Cole Porter's music especially translates very much into the modern."

After touring with "Riverdance," Kelly fell in love with traditional Irish music. She admires Fallon, who learned the traditional music passed down from her grandmother.

"And, Mairead [the fiddler] is absolutely amazing," she said. "It's very rare seeing her stand still. She is so tiny. You could put her in your pockets."

Westenra is new to Celtic Woman, and joined the group for "A New Journey at Slane Castle." She will alternate with Ni Mhaolchatha as the fourth vocalist.
