This could be the start of something big: Let's pool our musical talent and compose a very special song for Hayley to sing if she's so inclined. The lyrics will be collaborative all the way -- I write a line, then you write a line, then the next person writes, and the next, etc. -- until we have a decent song she wouldn't mind singing. The melody for the song can be created by the most musically accomplished and inspired members, collaborating as well.
To coordinate this effort I suggest setting aside this thread as the place to do business. Maybe we should start with the lyric-writing, however long that takes to get it right, and then hand it over to the musicians who can supply their ideas and notation as they see fit.
When all is said and done we'll have a polished gem of a song written especially with Hayley in mind by those who know her music the best -- us! It's not crucial that she actually sings it, just that if she wishes to, it's all hers.
So who's onboard?
I'll start with the first line. Please add your lyrics as we go. We'll tweak it later in the finishing stages! Here goes:
A quiet angel heard me singing in the night

Hi Steve,
Great idea! I can't do much with the music, butI'll have a go with the words
Then all at once, my darkness turned into light She sang to me, that love will always conquer pain, And she'd return,to guide me, someday once again

No takers? I thought we would all be up for this. I can't do this mostly or even all myself. Steve, where are you? Where are out budding lyricists?
Before too long she kept her promise, came to me again Told me the story of my life, the joys, the tears, the pain My loves and losses all were there, my joys and sorrows too And that that's all behind me now, the future's bright and new.
Now come on, the rest of you. I don't want to have to write the whole thing! How about some more lines from you Steve you tarted this!

Hi I think it's a really sweet thought! But that's probably all I'm going to say here; I can't think of any lyrics! Good luck with it though, I'll be watching this space cheers, Joanne

Maybe the next line should be in Maori -- except that I don't speak a word of it:
As I gazed across the sky and seas, my spirit soared with blissful ease

How's this?-- And then I could finally see what the future held for me// Oh, now that seems so long ago, but still the future's bright// And I shall never cease to sing until I see the light. Ooohh... And the the CHORUS can be in Maori. Well... Can anyone here speak/write Maori??

Wow I like this idea - surprised it hasn't gone further. I'd be happy to try my hand at writing some music for it, and maybe a chorus if you'd like!

Well I've got it! I took all of the lyrics each of you came up with, and some of my own, and wrote a song around them. I'll be sure to share it as soon as I get it recorded!

Oh dear, I've just noticed I had some input into that! But yes, we've got a real songwriter among us now (apart from hayley that is)!

Hey guys, here's a quick recording I made on my iPhone. It's still pretty rough, (I was actually reading the lyrics as I sang them lol) but it gives you an idea of how the song could be. Also please ignore my poor singing and imagine it in Hayley's voice an octave up Lyrics are in the description soundcloud.com/rorycosgrove/free/s-elQ3PP.s. The part after the first chorus would be instrumental, probably strings -Rory

Hey Rory, that's not half bad! Are we ready to let Hayley hear it yet, or do you think it needs more refinement? I find it quite hard to imagine how Hayley would sound singing it though. Oh and I guess it sounds like a song that should be sung by a guy rather than a girl.
But a very promising start nonetheless. Well done!

I certainly would like to refine it more, and make a better recording on my 8-track as opposed to my phone. Of course I'll gladly take any ideas anyone has to improve the song in other ways. I think it sounds more suited for a male singer because of the word "she" being used so often, but I can easily hear Hayley's voice singing the melodies. At the very least Hayley will see that many of her loyal fans have all collaborated to write a song with her in mind! -Rory
