Hi Martin, Read this article: www.greenwichcitizen.com/news/article/Composer-Tim-Janis-introduces-a-9-year-old-299726.phpShe was 9 before she was famous and already brought many to tears. Those are regular audience and not CC audience. Therefore, most are "UNTRAINED EARS". At that time, she was hardly at the current level, but still Jackie had emotional power. That is what Jackie Evancho is. She does not have to be perfect as long as she can drive the emotion and brought the happiness within audiences. Sing perfect beautiful is one thing, drive up the emotion is another thing. What is the different from Maria Callas and Jackie Evancho's "O Mio Babbino caro", it is the emotion. TRAINED EARS like your or some opera people maybe look for imperfection and may not feel the emotion. Do you know any 9 years old can brought people to tear include grown up without even close to singing perfect. Can that we trained? Probably not. She just born with such ability at a very young age at 9 even before she was famous. Hi Albert, Well, there is something in what you say of course. In the end, the thing that matters about music is the effect it has on us. Music can affect us in different ways. It's effect can be any combination of physical, emotional, intellectual and spritual. Classical crossover singers fall mostly into the emotional and spiritual categories. Hayley affects me more profoundly than any singer I have ever heard, and the effect is primarily spiritual. Technical imperfection though for me is a distraction. I think someone mentioned elsewhere on this forum, that listening to Hayley a lot makes one overly critical of other singers. And I have listened to Hayley pretty much every day for the last seven years. I think that is true, it certainly has had that effect on me. There are some singers (Camilla Kerslake for example) that I find hard to listen to for that reason. I was at a local concert tonight, where the soprano sang "O Holy Night". I was enjoying it, she is a good singer, until she suddenly dropped her voice a whole octave in the middle of the song. It sounded wrong (Hayley never does that - and it is Hayley that I am used to hearing sing that song) and distracted me from what was otherwise a good performance. The other thing I have to say that I have never heard Jackie sing live of course. I would love to hear her someday. The first time I ever heard Hayley's voice was at a live performance, and I was blown away. Recordings don't come close, but I can mentally translate them into waht I know she sounds like live. I have to say I don't pick up a lot of spirituality from Jackie, some emotion is certainly there. But she is young yet, so I see her more as someone who shows immense promise rather than someone who is the finished article now. I am much more interested in what she will be like in 10 years time than in listening to her now. That's why I would not like to see her hyped up now and forgotten before she reaches her peak. Jackie is a long term prospect, who can only get better if she looks after her voice and is well advised, as she seems to be. By the way, both Sue and I regard Hayley's "O Mio Babbino Caro" as the best we have ever heard. Check it out. Martin D

The local Christian station in my area played her version of O Holy Night on Sunday. Very nice. She does sound good in the higher notes, so if she would just stick with those for now...

I think she lip-synched "O Holy Night" because it sounded much too perfect. Or let me put it this way: if she wasn't miming then she deserves a special Grammy for that live performance in the freezing cold air.

Well, when I saw your post I knew I could contribute since I had a relative who was there and was right next to the stage she was singing on, so I asked him if she was miming and he said definitely not, they could hear her clearly as she inhaled, etc.

Hi Steven,
In this case it's quite possible she is lip-synching, it's such an official and big event, with the President there, it would be quite normal not letting a 10 years old, no matter how talented she is, sing live, as any child lacks the experience and reliability of a professional singer.
However, even considering this, I still tend to think it is live, incredible as it seems. There are some details that, to me, point that way: I am pretty sure the background music is the same track as in the album, but the singing from this performance differs quite noticeably from the one in the album. Normally, singers lipsynch to the album version. Of course, it is possible that they wanted a special recording for the occasion and that it was pre-recorded. However, if it was so, there are few issues that could have been done better and I tend to think for such an occasion, they had the money and equipment to do it. The first is the noisy breathing: I am pretty sure if it was pre.-recorded they would have lowered this unwanted effect. Secondly, I noticed a quite clear mispronunciation on "Fall on your knees", and I am sure, in such an important event, they wouldn't allow it to go on, they would have recorded it again.
But, wow!!! Very, very, very impressive, breathtaking! And she was shining, a really charming girl! Isn't her hair quite longer than most of the times we've seen her?

Yes, there was a series of excited tweets from Jackie a little while ago where she indicated her mom had finally allowed her to have long hair.

If thats the case, they have a different track for her to synch to for every performance. She has never performed the same song the same way twice to my ears. Ironically, the person who put up one of the videos thought she was a trifle off and attributed it to the cold air.

Read every post in this thread!
Just a couple of comments. Read earlier in thread about Becky Taylor, why didn't she catch on? was mentioned. IMO.. while she has a great voice.. she does not emote. No sense she understands the mood of the song.
Love Haley's silky smooth, glass like, rings like a bell voice. I'm not sure there's finer singer. However I like a little bit of grit in a voice. Wife and I will catch her if and when she swings around these parts.. Illinois.
Nor sure what perfect pitch or what pitch perfect is. I do believe Jackie's ability is that if she could physcally do it, her ear and mind are ready for it. I think when she misfires, and that is very, very rare, it's only because it's not quite in her range yet.
As far as her pushing it.. working hard... I think that not so.. she is almost effortless.

HEADS UP Jackie fans: She will be performing on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (NBC) this evening! Thanks for this Steve...I tuned in at 12:30 and somehow knew that Jackie would perform right before the show ended. She sang 'O Holy Night' wonderfully but I found her arm movements less than graceful.

Hopefully someone will clue her in about that eventually. She used to just have her hands more like Sarah Brightman, and that looked odd enough (on a small girl), but now it's just very distracting.
