Hi folks I have finally got internet back in my room!!! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifSo I can finally post from the warm comfort of my room! Anyway, back to topic: I have finally done my mid-year technical performance exam! It was so nerve-racking! For those interested, I played Gerald Garcia's etude no. 21 and Matteo Carcassi's etude no. 23. The mid-year technical is basically like any other graded exam, which I have had a lot of experience of! That doesn't mean I was any less nervous, I just kinda knew what to expect! Also, seeing as its at degree level, I really had to practise hard to get it sounding good. my teacher gave me a small smile when I finished the Garcia, so I hope thats a good sign! The next part was playing scales, which no-one likes! I was asked 12! I think they went OK, apart from the dominant 7th scale in the key of Eb.... The last part was sight-reading, which was awful! Firstly, the time signature was 9/8, which is rare for guitar, as well it being in the key of C minor! Ah well, I think I did ok on my pieces though... Anyway, I just wanted to share my exam story with you I now have to practise for a concert in a weeks time, where I'm premiering a piece by one of the composition students! i'm actually looking forward to it! cheers, Ben

Hey, Ben, really interesting report about the exam. And it also seems that you've done fine enough!
I am just an amateur and very low level music student: 3 years taking very relaxerd and unofficial lessons from my grandfather's brother. Those lessons are a mix of playing the organ with some very basic theory. But, hey, like more than one year ago, I was very inspired and surprised myself so much composing a very short trio for flute, violin and piano (and still waiting to hear it played by true instruments, since for now I only have heard it as a playback made by the computer). If anyone wants the music sheet, or the mp3 I can post it easily, and link it here. I would appreciate if someone gave me an opinion (don't expect too much, it's less than one minute long).
Also, I've got a best friend of mine learning seriously music, her main instrument is the flute, and I really enjoy when she makes concerts or play just for me.

I would very much like to know what inspired you to compose a short trio piece. My inspiration to learn guitar first came from my mum, whom I heard plucking away at some chords one day. I also saw a documentary on John Williams, which inspired me further to sign up for lessons! I'm intrigued to see this composition you've done. Is it OK if you post the sheet music? Did you have any kind of theme thats the piece is inspired by? i'm trying to persuade some younger composers to write more music for the guitar, as guitar is often overlooked. I have already persuaded one of my composition friends to write a piece for me, which I'm premiering for him next week. If you ever get the inspiration to compose again Michal, why not try something for the guitar? i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifCheers, Ben

Well, ok, here you go, but as I said, don't expect too much, I only have very basic musical knowledge, way not enough to compose. I composed this just with some miraculous inspiration and a sort of intuition based on what I have seen and observed in other music sheets.. About the inspiration, well, the title says it all: Conciertillo para tres hermanas, "Small concert for three sisters". The best friend of mine, that I mentioned before, plays the flute, but their two sisters also study music, piano the older and violin the younger. So, I thought, never heard of a piece composed for those three instruments, there have to be very few, it would be nice if they could play something together. I never expected it to turn out something listanable, but thought, well, let's give it a try, see what I am able to do. And that's how it ended up. It's not anything too good, but I was just so surprised it somehow didn't sound so bad! LOL, of course, I gave it to my friend, but it's been... almost two years and there haven't been an occassion for the three sisters to play it to me, so I am still waiting to hear it played by true instruments. Here are the files: Midi playback created by the composing program and then transformed to mp3: www.megaupload.com/?d=KCZEY2N2Sheet on pdf: www.megaupload.com/?d=6U69KZGOSheet on the original Finale Notepad file: www.megaupload.com/?d=NEA64U0AThe playback is rather badly volumed, the violin sounds much louder than it should and sometimes makes the flute hard to hear, but the free version of the program wouldn't allow me to control the volume. I can PM you my e-mail address so you can send them to me via e-mail, if you want to do it that way? Cheers, Ben

Hi folks Sorry I havn't posted on the HWI for a while! Anyway, a catch up: Uni is going great so far! I've passed all my exams, the most important being a mid-year technical exam, in which I had to play 2 'etudes' (studies) in front of the guitar tutors! Scary! I also had to memorise pretty much all known scales in preparation, of which only 6 were asked! It can be a bit frustrating how the amount of time spent learning an endless list of scales results in just a few being asked! Basically, it was like a normal graded exam. I've been deliberately signing myself up to do lunchtime concerts and evening concerts, just to build up some experience - something which none od the other first year guitarists seem to be doing! Our end of year recital is a solo concert after all, so I need as much experience for that as I possibly can! I've also been asking all the first year composers to write more material for the guitar. Sadly, solo classical guitar music seems to be non-existent in most of the composers portfolio's, except one guy who has composed a brilliant piece, based on the Gypsy jazz scale, hence its name 'Gypsy'. Its a rather mysterious piece, and according to the composer, is supposed to 'envoke a feeling of tranquility and calm'. Whether I manage to portay that or not, remains to be seen! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifI'm currently practising hard for my end of year recital, as I mentioned. I have to play for 20 minutes straight! The memorising of the music doesn't worry me, its the stamina needed to acomplish it! Anyway, thats this year so far in about 4 paragraghs! Cheers, Ben

Hi Ben congratulations on your results and good luck for the year I've just got my results for my first A-level module exam in English language and literature and I got an A!!! My teachers first told me this and at first I didn't think that much of it to be honest, then it sunk in and I felt really pleased, then I saw my teacher again in the day and she said "You realise you got 120/120- that means full marks- you're top of the class?" and they hadn't told me that!! ...my parents keep joking that I'd better be careful or else i'll start getting bigheaded lol...but that'll never happen...I still don't think I really deserved full marks as I don't think the exam went that well but obviously it did... best wishes Sing x

Congrats on your results! I think you definitely deserve full marks, considering the amount of hard work you must have put in to achieve it. My teacher quietly told me that I'd got the highest mark in the first year for the technical exam. Thats not as big as it might seem, considering there are only 4 of us in the first year, but I was happy nonetheless! Congrats again! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifCheers, Ben
