CHART-TOPPING songstress Hayley Westenra is the star soloist in a proms concert being held at RAF Cranwell.

The RAF Cranwell Proms Picnic in the Park is being staged in front of historic College Hall on Friday July 10 at 7.30pm and the Band of the RAF Regiment are locked in rehearsals under the baton of the Director of Music, Flying Officer Matt Little to make sure they live up to this top billing.

The young New Zealander began performing when she was just six years old and made her first recording in a professional studio at 12. She was still only 16 when she released her debut international CD, Pure. It rapidly became the fastest-selling debut album from a classical artist, reached number one in the UK classical charts and reached the Top 10 of the pop charts in 11 countries. Her albums have sold more than four million copies worldwide to date.

She is the biggest selling classical artist of the 21st Century and has performed for the Royal family including the Queen and Prince Charles, Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George Bush. She is also an ambassador for UNICEF.

The concert of light classical music will be compered by veteran comedian Jim Bowen and will have a spectacular firework finale to music. Food and refreshments are available on site and there are still tickets available priced at £20 each.

Well, the night after is Beaumanor Hall. If you want to see Hayley in the UK this year, that would be a good choice, as would the Bath concert in December.

As there have been no more concerts announced for the Summer I have decided on a 'mini tour' to Cranwell and Beaumanor Hall.... 10th and 11th July

Think I am the first to 'declare' for Cranwell. I intend to make a day of it and also see the Aero Museum .

Hi Graham,

Glad to learn that you will be able to make it to this concert.I would have liked to have gone myself but will be on holiday in Scotland at that time.
I belong to a local Historical Airfield Group and last year we had an outing to visit the RAF College which was very interesting.

For anyone going to this concert.
The schools in Leicestershire break up for there big holidays on the 10th July so there could be extra traffic about. Also the A46 from just north of A606 turn for Melton Mowbray to Newark has major roadwork and may have road closures and diversions in place or traffic lights in place.

Hi all. Last Hayley concert I attended was the Lincoln castle event last year, i'm very delighted to say I shall be attending the event at RAF cranwell on Friday. I hope to see some familiar faces and like always - I can't wait to see Hayley. Will post again after the event.
