I watched Faryl perform on the Ellen show. It was very nice, but I'm not convinced she wasn't miming. There were four live instrumentalists backing her yet the music was that of a full orchestra. Obviously, the live musicians were just there as props. This was not a very credible way of presenting her. In an interview on the BBC Faryl said that in her River of Light video she was asked to mime some parts and said " I can't mime, I'm a performer, I don't know how to mime". Katherine Jenkins was at the shoot and gave her some advice. So some very brief snippets in the video are mimed, but mostly it is sung. As for the US broadcasts the backing is the original orchestral backing as used in the UK broadcasts. Actually the track is downloadable from the competition tab on her website. You are probably right in that the musicians behind her were props mainly, and similar arrangements were used in her UK broadcasts. But when Faryl gives a live performance, then a live performance is what you get. The backing track is the original 60 piece orchestra playing. She is used to performing like this. If you listen to her competition demonstrations you will see that she uses the same backing tracks.

Now that takes me back years to my first performance with the Company of Ten that owns the Abbey theatre in St Albans. I can't remember whose play it was or its title but my first entrance in that play was through a set of french windows into a drawing-room set filled with genuine antique furniture from a member's flat, dressed in full tennis whites, waving a racket and declaring 'I say, anyone for tennis'. Try saying that and NOT get a laugh for it was not intended as a funny line Peter S.

I'm definitely slow off the mark getting the album (Though I expect to be getting it very soon) but I have to admit Faryl impresses me almost as much as Heyley did when I first heard her. Her voice is truly extraordinary, especially for her age. I was honestly more shocked by her than by Paul Potts, another rather surprising BGT alum. As a side note, I can't find a post where anyone linked to Faryl's MySpace yet, so here it is: www.myspace.com/farylsmith

Hello everybody! Faryl Smith was a guest on yesterday's Friday Night is Music Night. She sang 'Amazing Grace' in the first half and 'River of Light' in the second. It should be possible to listen again HERE until next Friday, but the BBC iPlayer doesn't seem to be working at the moment. Richard That will be the recording made at Watford which I attended and posted on earlier. I thought the announcer had said it would broadcast on 25th and I emailed to check as that is not a Friday but they never came back to me. However, I am now listening to the i-player recording, thank you Richard... And please don't tell me I should have posted this under 'What Are you Listening to/! Following on I have just discovered this from the Northampton Chronicle. Schoolgirl Faryl returns to Britain's Got Talent Published Date: 23 May 2009 Singing sensation Faryl Smith is to return to the Britain's Got Talent Show which made her famous. The Northamptonshire schoolgirl will once again meet the man who last year labelled her 'one in a million', when she takes to the stage of Britain's Got Talent on Tuesday to sing. The former Britain's Got Talent finalist will be closing Tuesday's live semi-finals with a performance of Amazing Grace, accompanied by a 24-piece gospel choir. Since finishing fourth on the show last May, Faryl, of Kettering, has had an extraordinary 12 months. She signed a £2.3m contract with Universal/Decca in the UK and released her debut CD No mention in The Radio Times. Peter S.

I just got her album and I can honestly say it blew me away. She's set the standard for the rest to live up to, this year.
I'm amazed at her range and control. She'd be amazing if she was twice her age, but for a 13 year old, this kind of talent is almost unheard of (And only 'almost' because of you-know-who).

Okay, so maybe she wasn't actually miming, but having four musicians onstage with her who are miming was very odd and misleading. I mean, no one would mistake a quartet for a full orchestra. It looked and sounded highly likely that her vocals were pre-recorded, even if -- as you insist -- they weren't. Faryl should take that as a sincere compliment because her singing was amazing!

A few nights ago, I saw something on television that might be worth relating here. It will take some explaining so please bear with me and contrary to what you may think, I am not off topic!
The programme was Britain’s Got Talent. One particular act in the auditions round was a very passable soprano singing an operatic piece while her husband, who is a professional florist, created a floral display to the music. I am sure Joyce would confirm that the chances of creating such a display in ninety seconds must be very limited. Individually, they did well but, let’s face it, this unlikely combination makes it something of a novelty act which was never likely to work on the scale that is needed to succeed on BGT.
Later, over on ITV2, I watched Britain’s Got More Talent. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the format, the presenter goes backstage, interviews some of the auditionees, we see a few more who were not seen in the earlier programme, he speaks to the judges and interviews some celebrities who comment on the acts they have seen.
The presenter, Steven Mulhern, mentioned that if he had a singer, he could create an impressive floral display equally well. As if by magic, a singer appeared and we heard the opening lines of the Bach/Gounod ‘Ave Maria’ - sung beautifully by the way. Steven started to throw flowers from one hand to the other as though mocking the earlier act. Of course, he dropped most of them, broke several stems and (deliberately) made a complete mess of it. Meanwhile, the singer valiantly continued in a very professional way. Three-quarters of the way through the verse, Steven dropped the lot and the singer stopped abruptly. The expression on her face clearly said “what are you doing?”. It may not come across well in this inadequate description but it was really very well done and very funny.
Now I gave a secret away right at the beginning of this post when I said I was not off topic. Yes, the singer was Faryl. I have been impressed by her voice since I first heard it. More recently, I have been equally impressed by the way she handles interviews – always with great maturity and very natural. Now we see the possibility of her acting skills and even comedy. Yes, it was only a light-hearted comedy routine but it was one of the most professional performances I have seen in years.
Faryl, you are a phenomenon.
Roger

I got the album last weekend and have heard it a few times. Great to hear another version of How Can I Keep From Singing. I was only familiar with this as a song by Enya and was amazed to find its history went back so far. Quaker hymn from North Carolina, by Susan Warner, 1850? Third verse by Doris Plenn. ©1964 Sanga Music, Inc. Doris Plenn, raised in North Carolina, learned this song from her Quaker grandmother, who told her: "Honey, this is my favorite song, and I want you to always remember it. It was made up years ago when people like us were being thrown in jail for their beliefs." The original words were written in the 1850's by Ann Warner, who lived on an island in the Hudson. Apparently made famous or better known at least by Pete Seeger .. I realise a new singer has to demonstrate their ability by singing familiar songs, I could have done without yet another version of Amazing Grace The River of Light arrangement to the Strauss is really great and it's always nice to hear The Way Old Friends Do. I am gobsmacked that I am listening to a 13 year old girl, just amazing..
