Hello Jeff and everybody! I don't know where the Radio Times found that information, because Classic FM played requests all day (10am to 6pm) on Monday 4th May. Richard

Hi everyone.
Been preoccupied elsewhere for awhile and amazing how much to catch up on. Unfortunately I was too late learning of the Brit Awards to cast a vote, but i seem to recall we were notified when voting became available so I would have cast my vote then (I hope/think!).
Interestingly, since Larry asked why we had such a thread on a forum dedicated to Hayley, most of my comments as i went through posts seem collected under this thread. Roger has already answered Larry so i will only echo his remarks.
Steve H kindly asked my opinion on her to which I would reply that somewhere in this thread I have delivered my view, track for track on that CD, as at that time. However, I have learned more of her since and other than confirming Roger's report in the appropriate thread on the Classicfm concert and saying his report is superb I have only this comment to add. That Faryl in the Albert Hall on her first song was way beyond the quality of her CD and the performance she delivered at Watford.
I felt that something seemed to throw her in her second song which didn't quite achieve the superlative success of her first song. I also felt like standing for her but sensed the age balance of the audience prevented such spontaneous response and did not want to embarrass her by being the only one. By the by, I think you, Roger, must have been in front of me as i looked all around the sides and behind, but didn't think of looking at that part of the audience. We were, after all, 2 out of 6,000! You also mentioned your ability to study fret fingering during the Rodrigo!
Richard made the comment: "Simon Cowell strikes again! I'll make no further comment."
To which I would quote Faryl in her interview with Loose Women: ‘Yeah, well it’s great when he’s on your side but perhaps not so great when he isn’t!" Very tactful but right on the nail! This is something that i am really appreciating about this girl, her ability to switch in and out. At school she is the schoolgirl and in interviews she is herself, with an unmistakable Brummy accent. Then she sings and because she has been in choirs since 6 she has acquired a refined way of singing which is so UNaffected it comes across totally naturally to her. She has the ability to switch from schoolgirl being schoolgirl to being mezzo-soprano Faryl doing her job. "I just sort of 'get on with it'".
Returning to Larry's comment, it is going to be fascinating, having learned so much over five years hearing Hayley's voice and personality develop and mature to watch this young girl follow the same path, as Hayley herself has said, she sees in Faryl her younger self.
Faryl was quoted in the Classicfm interview as wanting to meet Hayley. Having now done so I am sure the two girls will retain communication. Faryl may well be mentored by Katherine Jenkins but KJ was always 7 years older than Hayley and also older when she started in the limelight (she was a trained music teacher first). Hayley is nearer to knowing just what Faryl will be going through.
Faryl had to give up her football, Hayley much of her sporting interests and also learning the violin. Richard and Roger will remember her telling us at The London Palladium that she had spent the previous 4 days locked in her hotel bedroom under supervision doing her exams. Hayley has more directly relevant experience than Katherine with which to help Faryl test out her ideas.
Steve M posted; "Hmm, wouldn't it be sweet if Connie Talbot, Faryl Smith and Susan Boyle formed a trio and proceeded to take over the world? It could happen!"
There is an earlier post Steve M where I suggested : Faryl, Hayley and Katherine Jenkins as the Three Sopranos! But as Josė Carreras stated in Richard's article from The Times, they've got to WANT to do it!
Irish Hayley Fan posted: "First, there was the cute 6 year old, the choirboy who was bullied, now this woman. They know how to pull at people's heart-strings and they know what sells. It seems like Cowell uses his contacts (such as Oprah) to really promote someone, that he can make a mint from."
Yes, but on the Loose Women Show Faryl told how she had turned him down! Personally a great relief to me, for the very reasons she quoted I think she was right to do so—"I want to sing classical and I thought he might push me to pop." This is a shrewd girl. She definitely can switch in and out of her dual role: schoolgirl in schoolgirl environments, young professional singer in professional circumstances and she is quick enough off the mark and 'press aware' to be able to handle herself well in public with quick repartée.
From Larry: "Is Faryl Smith as good as she's given credit for or is it just her age that is producing so many accolades? Having never seen or heard her I'm curious. Didn't Hayley get the same attention when she was a neophyte?
Larry No. There is something there that is for all times. It will be as fascinating and interesting as having followed Hayley. Different reasons. Hayley's voice is unique which makes it difficult to place her in a genre, she is Hayley. Faryl Smith is more conventional AT THE MOMENT but has a voice that POSSIBLY should be trained for opera. However, her lovely clear enunciation and total naturalness raises doubts. Her voice is not as unique as Hayley's but the purity of its naturalness, seemingly a voice twice her age, in my humble and very limited view speaks volumes of potential career opportunities. I think she will be able to do without a microphone at an earlier age than Hayley. There is volume in that voice and being a mezzo enhances the depth that carries well against the deadening effect of an audience. She's in the States NOW, so listen out for her.
I think that concludes my notes on having read this thread over the last three weeks I have been elsewhere.
Peter S.

Yes I'll catch that one Roger. Faryl is very busy at the moment. She's on Radio 2's "Friday Night is Music Night" at 7.30pm on 22nd May. Hope you manage to get a photo of her at the Albert Hall tonight. I've told my colleagues on the Faryl Forum to expect HWI's usual comprehensive coverage !!

Thanks for that, Jeff. It is unlikely that I will get a photo of her tonight because I'm not going! However, HWI will be present and I'm sure someone will point a camera in the right direction.

Roger Oh so that's why I didn't see you, I just thought it was the crowd! Chatted to Richard briefly in a corridor, he heading to and I from the gents. Saw backs of Grant and others absorbed in photographing so did not intrude--nothing worse than having a good position and some clown distracts you at the wrong moment I was on my way to a snack at Il Borgo, Gloucester Road. Quiet little Italian place for spaghetti bolognese, glass of house red and a dessert and coffee for £20 and read of paper--I was suffering from the day before due to discovering a pair of 'buried' shoes and wondered why I hadn't worn them more often. It was not until I got to London that I realised why, they were a bad purchase (in a sale) and caused a tremendous blister on one foot, which was why I didn't hang around last night, even though I was in sandals to cope! Staying on afterwards is never an option for me at the RAH, as it was I only just managed to catch the penultimate last train home. An absolutely great night when all's said and done. Interestingly more DJs floating around than at the opera but all the girls were gladded up most enticingly. I shall enjoy the photos like everyone else. Yours aye Peter S.

Glad you enjoyed the night Peter. I sympathise with your shoe problem. I got a pair of trainers for £12.70 at Lidl and soon found out that you get what you pay for !! They're already wearing out ! As my grandmother used to say "If you don't really want them they're not a bargain at any price !" Did you notice what shoes Hayley and Faryl were wearing ? (There, we're back on topic before Richard notices !! )

Hi Jeff I never notice shoes normally but on a prompt by Grant I did notice that Faryl was wearing her customary flat pair of shoes which resemble ballet shoes.

Faryl together with Katherine Jenkins have just sung "Amazing Grace" live on the centre court at Wimbledon as part of the new roof opening ceremony. The chosen song was very suitable for today because by the Amazing Grace of God it kept dry throughout after heavy rain for most of the day here in London. However, I don't think Sue Barker has introduced many musical acts in her career as she said and I quote "Take it away girls...." Martin PS Faryl has also just appeared on Songs of Praise

Hello Martin and everybody! You can watch yesterday's edition of Songs of Praise until next Sunday HERE (UK only). Faryl Smith sings 'Calon Lan' about twenty minutes into the programme. This morning I heard that Simon Bates will be chatting to Faryl for an hour on Classic FM next Sunday, 24th May 2009, starting at 9:00pm British Summer Time. Richard
