Having latched onto the Albert Hall, of course it is the Classic Fm live concert, nearly full but I've got a middle seat in the arena area. Hi Peter and anyone else who will be attending the Classic FM concert at the Royal Albert Hall tomorrow night. Please note that John Williams has withdrawn due to illness. His replacement will be Craig Ogden. As far as I know, the programme including Faryl is otherwise unchanged. Roger

Sorry to hear John Williams is not well, Hope he recovers soon. John was one of the great pioneers of crossover music before we even had a name for it. Some of the Sky recordings are where classical music meets good fun ! Where the dinner jacket or suit were cast aside and creativity was invited in to try new things and the purists were invited to find the nearest exit and go home in a huff

There's more information at Classic FM: www.classicfm.co.uk/events/classic-fm-live/ Regrettably, we have to tell you that the guitarist John Williams has reluctantly been forced to withdraw from the concert, after succumbing to a particularly nasty bout of flu. John is desperately sorry to have had to pull out, however he has personally asked Craig Ogden, who's a brilliant guitarist and an old friend of Classic FM to step into his shoes. Classic FM are thrilled to be welcoming the London Chamber Orchestra to perform at the Royal Albert Hall under the baton of their conductor Christopher Warren-Green. They will be performing some of your classical favorites, show-stopping finales and a piece specially chosen by the Classic FM audience in a recent poll carried out by Benecol - the official Classic FM Live sponsors. Also taking to the stage for her Classic FM debut will be the young soprano, Faryl Smith who captured the heart of the nation during ITV's Britain's Got Talent contest. We are very excited to be able to have Howard Goodall, Classic FM's Composer in Residence, giving the world premier performance of one of his new pieces, Pro Curatis. Performing the piece will be Howard's specially chosen group, Enchanted Voices, who recorded the new album with Howard at Abbey Road in January.
Click on the link at the top to see the full programme. The concert will be broadcast on Classic FM on Monday 27th April 2009, starting at 9:00pm British Summer Time. Richard

Glad I dropped in (I'm leaving for London Thursday morning and couldn't remember if you had said you would be attending. I'm in Door 1 Arena B Row 14 Seat 16. Quite a week. Friday I head off to Thorpe Bay (don't ask, its a family gathering for the weekend!). Never been to Fenchurch Street station before so that will be fun (I gather it only has 4 ;platforms and is the only London terminus without a direct tube connection (use the Tower)). Then Torvil and dean next week in Birmingham. Peter S.

Peter, were you there? Sorry I forgot to take a note of your seat number but I looked around both inside and out but failed to locate you.
I will keep any report of the rest of the event fairly brief; it is Faryl's thread after all!
This was a magnificent concert with its most varied programme. The London Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Warren-Green, opened with one of my great favourites - Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man'. I had not heard it played live before and it was worth the journey for that alone.
This was followed by 'The Blue Danube Waltz' by Johann Strauss II before Craig Ogden was introduced (in place of John Williams) for a splendid rendition of Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez'. Somehow, I heard more in that piece than I ever did from a CD, possibly because I was close enough to see his fingers flying up and down the fretboard!
Next, Howard Goodall was introduced to conduct his own work, 'Pro alios curantibus' from 'Enchanted Voices', featuring an all-female vocal ensemble of the same name. I had heard this recently on Classic FM but, for live performances, this was a world premiere.
The first half concluded with the finale from Elgar's 'Enigma Variations'.
The second half opened with Khachaturian's 'Sabre Dance' which sounded magnificent. Then came an unexpected addition to the programme - 'Abide With Me' played by the orchestra, the Royal Albert Hall organ (which is so large you could get a house inside it!) but mainly featuring four pipers from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. I told you it was a varied programme but, OMG, did it sound good.
Then came the one work which was unfamiliar to me - 'The Academic Festival Overture' by Brahms. I was never into Brahms!
Simon Bates (Classic FM presenter) then introduced the next artist simply as "Faryl". The applause as she walked onto the stage was deafening. Her rendition of the Bach/Gounod 'Ave Maria' was as good as I have ever heard. She looked comfortable in front of six thousand people and sounded magnificent. For a line or two, I closed my eyes and just focused on the voice. Surely this had to belong to someone of relatively mature years? Nope, she really is just thirteen. Unbelieveable.
Again, the applause was prolonged and very enthusiastic from an audience who seemed utterly spellbound. On several occasions, Faryl inched towards the microphone as though she was about to speak but was unable to because the applause just would not subside. Eventually she thanked everyone and introduced her next song, 'Amazing Grace'.
Once more, the applause was almost deafening. She eventually left the stage but returned long before the applause died down. She was about to leave for a second time but was intercepted by a very young girl who presented her with a bouquet of flowers. She returned to the centre of the stage once more so she could be seen holding them and thanked the audience once again.
This afternoon, I had some sort of premonition and I am absolutely delighted to reveal that it came true tonight when I was privileged to see Faryl being presented with her first gold disc for 100,000 sales of her debut album.
The concert concluded with 'Montagues and Capulets' from Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet', 'The Radetsky March' by Strauss and, with audience participation, Elgar's 'Land of Hope and Glory'.
For those who may still think that a classical concert is somewhat staid and dry, think again. An impressive indoor firework display occurred twice during the concert and the final piece saw thousand of balloons decend from the roof, all of which were punched back up by me... oh, alright, I had a little help from the rest of the audience! Meanwhile, the orchestra and the front rows were showered with the outburst from confetti cannons in what had become a real party atmosphere. Everyone was in full voice despite Simon Bates saying he couldn't hear us so we had to do it all over again!
It was quite a night but most of all, thank you Faryl and congratulations on your gold disc.

Hello Roger, This sounded like a terrific performance! Congratulations are in order for Faryl...well done! I trust that a second gold disc will be forthcoming. Thanks for your report, Roger. I would have really enjoyed this show, as I recognized each musical piece that you mentioned...except for 'The Academic Festival Overture' by Brahms. Although I do know a certain lullaby Joe

Hello everybody! If you missed the Classic FM Live concert last night, you can still listen to it if you click here and select "The Full Works Concert with John Brunning - Tuesday April 28th". Yes I know the concert was broadcast on Monday April 27th, but it's very obvious that the person running Classic FM's website doesn't know what day it is! Richard

I find it somewhat curious that Faryl gets so much attention on a website that is ostensibly dedicated to Hayley Westenra.

Hi Larry, I think the level of interest in Faryl reflects her wonderful talent. Considering her musical style is remarkably similar to Hayley's, I would be surprised if there wasn't much interest. I believe she is going to be extremely popular but, never fear, we won't let her take over the forum! And just for our American friends: Information from farylmusic.com/news1Information from farylmusic.com/news2Roger

I watched Faryl perform on the Ellen show. It was very nice, but I'm not convinced she wasn't miming. There were four live instrumentalists backing her yet the music was that of a full orchestra. Obviously, the live musicians were just there as props. This was not a very credible way of presenting her.

Larry Well Larry, she only gets attention on this thread as do other artists on theirs so I'd better point out (for people who don't visit her official site) that Simon Bates will be chatting to her on Classic FM on Monday 4th May for an hour at 5pm. Since it's a bank holiday it will probably rain so I will be listening !!
