Hello everyone On Bank Holiday Monday this week, I and a group of friends were guests of London Fire Brigade for the day, the highlight of which was a visit to the Fire Boat Pontoon at Lambeth, close to the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament. We had expected only to be viewing the boats, but our host had arranged a demonstration of their capabilities which was most impressive and exciting to watch. For the technically minded, the two boats "Fire Flash" and "Fire Dart" were built in 1999 by Alnmaritec in Northumberland and are landing craft type boats of their 'Wave Patroller' class. Both are powered by two Volvo diesel engines. "Fire Flash" approaches at high speed Who says boats don't have brakes?! "Fire Flash" demonstrates it's ability to slow rapidly from high speed. For its second run past, "Fire Flash" demonstrated its fire fighting capabilty with its monitor in use. The two boats have awesome manoevering capabilities as can be seen in these two shots, of "Fire Flash" turning at high speed. The eagle eyed amongst you may notice the wide grin on the face of the monitor operator in the first of the pictures - Grant, in his wisdom, had decided that better pictures would be obtained by taking advantage of the lower vantage point afforded by standing on the deck of "Fire Dart" - seconds after these pictures were taken, quite a few of us found ourselves to be quite damp! Best wishes Grant

Hi Grant, some good action photo's there, and yes if you were in the wrong place I would imagine you would be rather damp Just curious here Grant, are those boats using the “Jet propulsion” pump system that was engineered here in NZ by Hamilton Jetboats? They have sold different model pump units for different applications and was keenly sought after by the marine industry in the UK quite some years ago now. When Hamilton's demonstrated the jetboat on the Thames, they were amazed at the Hamilton 360deg turn at full speed. cheers, Rodders

Hi Rodders Just curious here Grant, are those boats using the “Jet propulsion” pump system that was engineered here in NZ by Hamilton Jetboats? Yes, they both have two Hamilton 291 water jets - I didn't want to bore everyone with too much technical detail, but if I'd realised that Hamilton was a New Zealand company, I certainly would have included that bit of info! You can read more about the boats HERE and just scroll down. Thanks everyone else for your kind comments. Best wishes Grant
