Hi Mark Great pictures! I like the one Sophie took - very romantic with a nice watery background. My favourite though, is the one of Sophie, a great action picture. A tip for when you're taking that type of shot is to use as fast a shutter speed as possible - up the ISO too if necessary. I found when I started to use a digital camera that moving subjects need a much faster shutter speed than they did with film. Hope that helps. Best wishes Grant Hi Grant Yes, thanks for the tips. I have read about such things but at present am still on everything automatic! I will try with the shutter speed increased when I need that kind of shot again. Still trying to work out how to increase /decrease the ISO I have noticed that even on auto, when the flash is switched off, the shutter speed sounds quite abit slower. Would this also mean the ISO has increased do you think ? Back to the manual!! Best wishes Mark

Hi Mark, What kind of camera is it? I tried to see its dig signature but it didn't come through. I asked about cameras when I bought my tickets and got mixed answers. Some said no and others said no flash photography. I was hoping that some of the more experienced HWI members could help get the cameras in. In the States I have pro passes that get me most of the time without trouble. It figures that someone using 'phototeach' would have to try

Cameras at concerts : It really is every one for themselves, you take your chances, A press pass might be handy,it might deflect one member of the venue security staff but not another, You may be asked to stop taking photographs or you may be asked to leave the premises. At one venue a security staff member asked me to reformat a card in front of him and he watched until it was finished formatting.. luckily it was a blank card as I had changed it at the interval.. luck of the draw ! I am not the only member who has had this done. Another member had a video camera confiscated, which could be collected from the security office after the concert. Most venues forbid any form of photography .. Full stop. Don't forget the venue themselves have things they don't want photographed: Exposed wiring, ancient electrical systems, Faulty exit signs, holes in carpets on stairs, safety rails below the acceptable height, Dirty facilities, unhygenic food and drink serving areas and staff, dodgy staff members moonlighting from other jobs, the list could go on and on.
An official statement at a recent concert projected onto two big screens before the concert began, read something like : "No flash photography at the request of Miss Hayley Westenra" Karsten may have a "Non flash " photo of the statement. That statement implied you could take photographs without a flash ! but other smaller A4 notices said "NO PHOTOGRAPHY" but we may not have seen them as they were very small and badly located in places with bad lighting.
For sure you are in the centre of a legal minefield, no way forward, no way back, no left, no right.
It really is every man for himself and if things go wrong you may find yourself very much on your own.

Lets see if I have any better luck with these being the right size etc. Hello Mark! I'm afraid you're still not having much luck with the file sizes. I enjoyed looking at your photographs, but unfortunately all seven are over 300KB, while the maximum size permitted on the forum is 100KB. I've removed the image tags to leave clickable links. Best Wishes, Richard

Hi Mark Thanks for providing your photos. I, too, have just purchased a new camera. It is a Panasonic Lumix FZ28 with a 4Gb memory card. It has a very thick instruction book (suits the owner! ) and I have just mastered switching the camera on. Best wishes Martin

Would this also mean the ISO has increased do you think ? Back to the manual!! Best wishes Mark If the shutter speed sounds slower, then the ISO will almost certainly have decreased. In 'auto' mode (certainly with my Canon 40D) the camera normally selects ISO 400 and evens out the speed/aperture to give the best all round option. Switching the flash off may make the camera think it is brighter and it may reduce ISO accordingly, although I am not familiar with Nikon so can't be sure. You should have a semi-automatic mode which, on the Canon is called 'programme' and is indicated with a 'P' this mode will allow the camera operator to set certain functions and the camera will then set the others in line. I use this sometimes when I'm photographing Hayley at signing sessions using flash. Maybe you should bring the manual to the next concert (Leamington?) and we can have a look then. There may even be a Nikon user there who will obviously be more familiar with how yours works. Best wishes Grant

HaHa Comet, you may have theatres like that in Ireland but here in the UK we have something called "Health & Safety" and if one of their inspectors found just one of those things you list it would be a very serious matter indeed. Mostly, it is the stage set that would be copyright and any props or costumes on display. Largely though, it is down to the instructions given to staff and misunderstandings. I have worked front of house for many years and we were always told "no photography" that would generally refer to plays and musicals, but no one ever said any different if it was a concert performed on an empty stage where, technically there would be no copyright issues. But, at the end of the day, it is as you say, a minefield which has led to some pretty unpleasant situations in the past. Personally, I prefer to watch the concert and take photo's afterwards if the opportunity arises. Best wishes Grant
