Ten year old Zoe Mace has made a shock entry into the UK Classical Artist chart today (Sunday), at number 2. The album is called "Songs for My Sister" and for anyone who doesn't know, there lies behind it a very sad story You can hear samples of the album at here at HMV and you can buy it there or at the Downs Syndrome Association on the link above. I think I will; I would LOVE this album to do even better than it already has done... Hayley remains at no. 16, Katherine is no. 1 but I won't do a new post on that. Zoe is THE big news this week. [

Thanks Dave for sharing this most remarkable info. with us. I love the songs and Zoe is a brilliant young lady. I was heartbroken to learn that her sister Jodie passed away after undergoing surgery. As well as going to the links above, take a look at amazon.co.uk to buy 'Songs for My Sister'. There are two reviews from 9th June about the CD. One is from Zoe herself. The other review is from someone who actually arranged some of the songs. www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0009JDC3O

Thanks for that Joe, it seems to be a very worthy cause and yes, for her age Zoe has a very nice voice indeed! But hmmm... having listened to the samples at HMV, I am very surprised it's been let in the classical chart - it's mainly showtunes and old standards. Neither HMV nor Amazon class it as classical at the moment, what do others think? I wonder... I hope! that perhaps the Official Charts Classical Committee have a heart of gold buried under their hard exterior, and have bent the rules to benefit the charity Will they now DARE to chuck it out? I hope not - we shall find out on Friday - when Classic FM publish their chart which is based on the same set of rules. Fingers crossed! I also found the following information at HMV: May 2005 Following the amazing success that 10 year old Zoe Mace had with her first low budget recording last year which sold almost 5,000 and raised £27,000 for Oxford Children's Hospital, who had looked after Zoe's inspiration, her beloved younger sister Jodie, it was decided that she would make a fully professional recording with national distribution and donate the proceeds to the Downs Syndrome Association.
Unfortunately during the preparations for the new record Jodie went into hospital for an operation from which she did not recover. Although heartbroken Zoe was determined to complete the project as a tribute to her sister.
This young lady has an unbelievable voice, classically trained and mature far beyond her years... Good luck to her and the album

Hello everybody! I've just listened to the samples on the HMV site. I agree that Zoe has an incredible voice for her age, and the story behind the album is very sad. I think Hayley would be interested to hear her story as well, if she doesn't know already. I would also like to wish Zoe every success with the album and her future career. Bye for now, Richard

Well my local branch of MVC too, have 6 copies of it. They had 7 - until I bought one! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Inevitably as I played it for the first time, I compared her with Charlotte and Hayley's first recordings - she's good but not as good - but then I remember she's a year or two younger than Charlotte was, and 2 or 3 years younger than Hayley was I can see the potential for her to become a very good singer indeed and as for it being a big hit, that may depend on her being allowed to stay in the classical chart. If she stays in, and can get to no. 1, she will beat Charlotte's record of the youngest ever solo artist to top it. That story, classic FM airplay, and the sadness of it all would give it a big boost possibly into the pop chart (it's already in the top 200 not far behind Katherine Jenkins). Her performance of Gershwin's "Summertime", is unbelieveable for a 10 year old. As for her tribute song to the memory of her sister Jodie, A Little Ray of Light, well... she sings it beautifully... and it makes you cry.

It seems that Zoe has her own little website: www.zoemace.co.uk/index.htmUnfortunately, there is neither forum nor guestbook. Pity - it would have been nice if several of us could have left her a message to show our support. Take a look guys, in case I've missed something. Roger

Thanks Gerrit... it's interesting that the story was picked up the day after the Classic FM chart show... and not earlier in the week when it first happened. That just shows the influence of Classic FM - and quite right, too! I like these bits from the article: "A top-selling charity CD recorded by a 10-year-old girl to raise money for people with Down's syndrome has been thrown out of the classical charts after complaints from the music industry that it was not "classical" enough... The Official UK Charts Company blamed "human error" for the initial inclusion... Paul Clifford, the operations director, said: 'After the chart was made public, several music industry sources contacted us to query the record's inclusion... ' Last night, all four record companies representing the top 10 artists in the classical album chart when Songs for My Sister was released denied complaining about the record... A spokesman for Sony BMG said: 'It would be a very low thing for anyone to do.' Well I did my bit, I bought it... and red faces all round in the industry. at them. However... "Classic FM, the classical music radio station, said that it would continue to play tracks from Songs for My Sister in its programming despite the ruling to remove it from the album chart."

The fact that Zoe's album has been thrown out of the classical chart is making big headlines! How low can the bureaucrats in the music business go?!!! Let's hope the extra publicity helps Zoe's sales. Bye for now, Richard

I have just added a profile for 10-year old singer Zoë Mace to Young Classical Performers: groups.msn.com/YoungClassicalPerformers/zoemace.msnw All material on this page has been supplied by her parents Not only is Zoë a class singer, the story that goes with it really tugs at your heart strings. Thanks Gerrit, that's an excellent page you have already, nice job there!
As you know i am a long time supporter of Zoë and her work (well for 6 months anyway!) but after some of us last posted about Zoë on the official Hayley forum in November, things had gone quiet again. So I'm really pleased that Linda made herself known over there and we certainly intend to do "our bit" here. For starters, I've moved this thread into a new sub-board for Zoë and we'll see what else we can do to help.
Cheers, Dave

Hello everybody! That is a wonderful page on Zoe, so many thanks to Gerrit for the link. I've listened to "She Moved Through The Fair" and "O Mio Babbino Caro", and I must congratulate Zoe for her amazing voice and technique! I was unable to play the clip of "Summertime" in either Media Player or Real Player, but I'm sure it's even better! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest Wishes from London, Richard

Here is Summertime (converted) - now on Gerrit's website with other clips! Do not miss this, it's a fabulous recording! Cheers, Dave

Hi, Dave and Richard,
I found that the original sound file plays in a stand alone Real Player, but that when accessing it on the web, Real Player tries to play it "on page" in the browser.
As the sound format is unusual, I think it is better as WMA (or MP3). I had been considering converting it myself, but gladly replace the current file with your WMA version. I don't think Linda and Peter Mace would object - but I'll check with them anyway.
By the way, I have alerted the main Dutch Downs Syndrome Association to Zoë's story. I hope they see something in it! In consultation with Linda and Peter, I will be receiving Zoë's two albums - and rather than transferring funds to the UK, will be making a donation to the Dutch Downs Syndrome Association.
Gerrit
