A completely new version of "What You Never Know" was played last Friday night in the UK on... BBC Radio 2 The show is called The Green Room and the host is Mariella Frostrup... who said she likes it! I bet not everyone in here does, though! My immediate thought after hearing it was... why a different version from the existing album? Well, we know for sure that Decca have been thinking about releasing this as a single so maybe... just maybe.. this is it? Or, it could be for the UK and/or US version of the album? You can listen to a repeat of the show until Friday night here at the BBC and if you use the 'skip' buttons when the player opens, Hayley is played a couple of minutes after 1 hour 35 minutes into the show. Or, you can cut out all that messing around and listen to it in/download it from my personal webspace here and I'll leave it up as long as I dare (for a few days at least). Mariella also said Pure is triple platinum and must mean in the UK. But I think she's wrong about that - unless Decca know something we don't (planned further shipments) and have updated her in the media pack? Hmmm... i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

Thank you for the direct link Dave! Personally I much prefer the version on the Australian version of "Odyssey". The backing on the new version spoils it for me. It doesn't suit Hayley's voice, and it rather shatters the mood created by the rest of the album. I'm hoping this was only a promotional track. Bye for now, Richard

Yes, I also prefer the version on my copy of 'Odyssey'. Maybe this version will become a single later. I don't think this version is good for promotion.

Thank you Dave. I agree with Richard in that the arrangenment of this new version is not in keeping with the rest of the album. That it should have been recorded at all is even more stange when you consider the decision was made to drop the orchestral ending of 'May It Be' because that was considered not in keeping with the other tracks.

Hi Dave, Thanks for the recording of that track. I agree it does'nt come close the the 'Odyssey' album verion. It sounds like this is the live version that might be included in any future single release. I hope they dont put that on the UK version as it would spoil the album. Fingers crossed its just a promo track. I suppose the good news is that Radio 2 are playing it and they seem to be informed regarding the album release. Could mean alot more airplay coming up . I think it could be put on the UK version and I do argee with what you say. I do not care much for this one. Dave I also think she is wroung on that If that was ture BPI would of say it and there are alot of things that still say it is 2 times puilum I think that is what she meant. I think the why that it looks like they are going with Odyssey is not good.

Whether you like this new version or not, if it is for promo purposes only, is it not somewhat misleading?

I've only heard the version of What You Never Know on the Australian album through the audio clips on the Odyssey e-card - but I have to agree, that version sounds (for want of a better phrase) a lot purer. I also can't see the point of sending this version out if it was purely for promotional purposes - maybe this will be the version which will get released as a single. Perhaps this new version is one of the reasons why the finalising of the UK tracklisting is taking so long?

I've never heard this version so I can't compare. I think its very beautiful and for me it suits Hayley very well! The only thing I feel could have improved this version is an echoing voice. Repeating the words, but as they do in pop songs, slightly different from the main singer. I don't really know how to explain it really well but when I was listening to this I started echoing and it sounded really good. If they do another version maybe Hayley can double herself or Sophie can join. It would be neat to have another song with some Sophie on it! If I get a chance to see her again I'll mention it to her and see what Hayley thinks about it, . Natasha

Hi Natasha,
By suggesting the "echoing voice", do you mean repeating the melody (perhaps with slight adjustments) a bar behind the main lead vocal? Perhaps along the lines of 'Panis Angelicus, of example? If so, I have just tried it and have come to two conclusions....
1. I think it could have worked. 2. I can't sing! Haha
During the run-up to Odyssey's release, I had secretly hoped we might hear something of Sophie on it. Alas, it was not to be.

I can't explain it real well in words but it would be something like...
1st Voice: What you never know won't hurt you... 2nd Voice: It won't hurt you...
1st Voice: What you never know won't lie... 2nd Voice: It won't lie...
1st Voice: What you never know won't desert you.. 2nd Voice: It won't desert you... etc.
The second voice would be more poppier adding the stuff to "you" that pop singers do, lol.

Having heard only the sample of the album version of "What You Never Know..", I have to say that really like this version, and I think it was a smart thing to use it as a promo track becasue it's bound to appeal to many people.
Two reasons: first, it's got a more mainstream-pop feel than the album version which the public can easily tap into and enjoy.
Second, it combines pop, classical, crossover, new age, soft rock, and several other genres I can't quite put my finger on, so Odyssey will gain a wider audience.
If I heard that song on the radio, I would most likely buy the album. It probably leaves a different impression when you already own the CD, but to me this was just fine (the arrangement reminded me a bit of the material on Pure. Maybe that's another reason for mixing WYNK like this).
I like Natasha's suggestion very much, but for me, what was missing most on this track was Hayley's voice! A few times it felt as if there was more focus on the arrangements than on Hayley. My suggestion would be to tone down the instrumentals or makes Hayley's voice bolder (or maybe that was just the quality of the clip.)
Anyway, rating ... four and a half stars.
