Hi folks, Hayley has confirmed (last night whilst at the Hope Street Hotel, Liverpool), that What You Never Know will be released as a single in the UK in October. Keith. At last!!! Confirmation... and an approximate date i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifThanks Keith, it looks like the strategy will be to rely on an initial sales rush/promos to get Odyssey into the UK classical and pop charts, then release the single after a few weeks to get more mainstream airplay and (hopefully) stop it slipping down the charts while Hayley is in the US in October. The great thing is that a pop single with no airplay on the classical stations should be very effective in keeping Odyssey near the top of the classical charts, too! Then, I guess, there will be another round of promos and some concerts when Hayley returns to the UK in late October/early November in the hope of keeping it in the charts until the end of November. Very little usually changes in the charts in December, so If their plan works, Odyssey will still be there at Christmas and could double its sales in the pre-Christmas rush... just like Pure did. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifFingers crossed!

Hi, Thanks for the information Keith, very exciting her first UK single release. I'm still wondering if these dance remixes are going to come into effect. I can't see them putting those mixes and Hayley's version on the same single. They will probably use a radio version, album version and maybe through another track on to it. I'm just hoping it's not a repeat of Katherine Jenkins's attempts at releasing a single . Emmett

Aaaah, Katherine's last single.... flopped (bless her! ) and only reached no. 76 So Hayley's target must be... top 75! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif But I wonder who will buy it? Classical/crossover fans won't (except us!!!), as they'll be getting the album anyway. I think some pop fans who wouldn't be seen within a mile of a classical/crossover album might buy it... but I guess the main purpose is to get Radio 2 airplay. I'd be very surprised if it gets near the top 20, but you can never be sure about these things

Good to hear a confirmation. It's a nice song to make into a single -- very catchy, but not stuck-in-your-head catchy. And if they do use the remixes, it's a pretty versatile tune that should work all right in any setting. Only, there are many other arrangements to experiment with than -- --dance mixes. ~Someone

Hello everybody! I'll certainly buy the single, although I much prefer the album version. Personally I'm hoping "Odyssey" does well in the album charts, but I'm not sure the singles charts mean much these days, apart from generating extra radio airplay. I used to buy a lot of singles when I was a lad back in the 60s (1960s, not 1860s!), but I really only buy CD albums and DVDs these days. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest Wishes from London, Richard

Kia Ora Hayley-fans, Today I received the promo-CD of „Odyssey“ with the title “Hayley Westenra – What you never know”. Release Date: 3rd October 2005 This CD has 2 tracks of “What you never know”: 1 st: SUNRISE MIX 2 nd: QUIET MONEY MIX The second track is known from the New Zealand-Version of “Odyssey”. The first track is quite different and very good suitable for pop charts and radio stations with “common” listeners. I made an example of 22 sec. for you by cubase. I hope you enjoy it. www.lothar-jurk.de//HW/HWI/Promo_CD_WYNK_2_tracks/WYNK_1.mp3Kind regards, Lothar Click to enlarge

Hi Lothar, thanks for those great photos and the information! I had to resize the photos as they were messing up the forum formatting but, you can still see the details of track listings etc. by right clicking on it and choosing "save as" to download it. Thanks for the sample of track 1, I think it sounds like the same mix played in "The Green Room" on Radio 2 a couple of weeks ago. Are you sure the 2nd track is exactly the same as on the NZ version of Odyssey? Usually, the single mix would be a little different from the standard album version. Is it in fact the same as the WYNK track played in the SAGA Radio interview I posted the other day? That one's about 2m 25s long, one minute shorter than the album version but otherwise fairly similar ... but not the same - there are some extra subtle Hayley bits added i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif! The track time given on the CD cover you posted is 2m 28s - I am guessing it's the same as in the SAGA interview - which I LOVE!!! In which case... there are indeed THREE versions of WYNK Correct me if I am wrong Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave, I think you are right. Tomorrow I will look for more details, but my feeling was also, that it sounds at some points a little bit different (higer) than the other version on NZ-Odyssey-Version. I like this sunrise mix very much also.

Hello Lothar! Listening to the clip, it sounds faster and higher. I think they have speeded up the original vocal track, but not to the extent that Hayley sounds like Pinky and Perky! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifOh dear, I'm showing my age remembering Pinky and Perky. I bet they don't remember me! See you on Thursday, Richard

Hi folks, I have official word on the single What You Never Know. It will now NOT go on general release, but will remain only as a radio play track. But, for the very lucky, all is not lost. Some time during the day or early evening tomorrow (Friday), I will have some special news so, come back to the forum and look for the special thread I will start to find out exactly what that news is. Cheers, Keith.

If 'What You Never Know' is not to be released as a single, why use it as a radio play track? What is wrong with using the Odyssey version as the radio play track? To use something that will never be available to the public will surely cause people to assume that they are listening to the Odyssey version. And that is surely misleading..... is it not?
Your thoughts please.

I have just read the small print on this single. Part of the recording and mixing was done in a studio in Barns Green, West Sussex which is of no interest whatsoever to anyone on this forum except me. Why? Because it is less than five miles from where I live! I doubt that Hayley ever went there though. Roger

Hi Guys, Lothar, thanks for the mp3 clip and the scans from the single. I though these 2 mixes would have been dance/r'n'b music?? They don't sound like it. Wonder why they used those remix names . That version is definitly pitched up too much, it sounds bad . Needs to be pitched down a few %. Seems now they are not going to release it, so anyone with the single hold onto it, it will be a great collectors item. Emmett

Hi All, Approximately 15 minutes ago I was watching the video for 'What You Never Know (Won't Hurt You)' on Classic FM TV. Has everybody seen that one? My favourite bit is where Hayley is paddling in the sea and she spinning round and round with her arms outstretched like a "Hayleycopter"!!! BTW if you own a copy of the Malaysian version of 'Odyssey' (Decca 475 7506) run and get it now! You will know that this particular version also includes a DVD with the videos for 'Both Sides Now', 'What You Never Know (Won't Hurt You)' and 'Amazing Grace' in 16:9 widescreen format! In fact I'm going to watch the video for 'What You Never Know (Won't Hurt You)' again right now! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifAndrew

Hey, look, Sarah Brightman sings 'What You Never Know' And what's even more interesting is that album with What You Never Know was released before Odyssey. This song was co-written by Hayley though, right? ? Here's the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ0S7LX-jQc
