Hayley's 4th International Album

Hi Stephany,

I am not aware that any of those titles were suggested by Hayley. It is almost certain that several titles were put on the shortlist and discussed by her, her family, Bedlam Management and the record company. For example, we think that 'Eternal' was a working title for the album that was eventually released as 'Treasure'.

I know that 'Odyssey' was chosen because it means "the incredible journey" (hence our logo!) which, at the time of its release, seemed to describe the path she had taken very well. For that reason, everyone seemed very happy with it... until I pointed out that most sales assistants wouldn't be able to spell it!

Hello everybody!

I like the idea of Hayley recording a French song or two. Another Edith Piaf number that might suit her voice rather well is 'Ne Me Quitte Pas', written by Jacqes Brel, and she might like to consider mixing the French lyrics with the English ones, 'If You Go Away'.

The pronounciation of the French language seems to be quite difficult for native English speakers. It can very quickly ruin the song. Elizabeth Marvelly did well on her two French songs but for some words because I can't understand everything she's saying

I certainly agree with that. However, Hayley could easily learn French b/e she's so amazing!

Hi Stephany,

I can't see it being a problem for Hayley to sing in French, after all it has similar roots to Italian which we know Hayley can sing (Santa Lucia, Lascia etc.) Additionally, when singing it is possible to learn the phrases phonetically without being fluent in the language. One of the best things about Hayley's voice is the clarity of diction and the pureness (no pun intended) and she obviously has control over the pronounciation. Anyway, she sounds great even when singing nonsense like Flood or no lyrics like in Bachianas!

Other than French, I guess Spanish is the other major language that Hayley has not sung or recorded in? I'd quite like to hear her tackle something Spanish, maybe with a Spanish guitar or Flamenco feel. It would also open up the greatest untapped market for Hayley if she did any Spanish pieces (i.e Central and South America and also other parts of the US).

That is a very interesting point Steve. It is not just command of language but the accent.

I think we need to turn to Thomas, here. Thomas, what is your view of Hayley's accent when singing in German? May be it was the 'Anglicised' accent that made me think her German was superb, so beautifully soft when German generally to our ears sounds hard and gutteral?

But then, while opinion will fluctuate dependent upon the nature and association of language, does accent matter when the intent is using someone else's language linguistically correctly and spreading interest? However, I do take the Puerto Rican point.

Your point is valid Steve, but at the same time I wonder - some people are clearly better at phonetics than others. For example, on the Sparkle duet, Helmut Lotti has no accent at all that I can detect.

Thank you very much for this informative answer. Until now I was convinced that all the titles were chosen personally by Hayley but I realize that it may not have been the case.

James, you are right in saying that French and Italian are close. But phonetically it is quite different because Italian contains lots of vowels so it's much easier to pronounce. Hayley seems to love Italian so I wouldn't be surprised if she included one more Italian song in her 4th album!

Hi Peter!

I love it when Hayley sings in German. She's got a sweet accent which makes the song even more enjoyable to listen to.
But Hayley's got her accent only when she sings. When she was talking to me in German she's got almost no accent and she has still sounded lovely.

I have no doubt Hayley will be able to sing a song perfectly in French. When Hayley speaks German I understand everything but when she sings in German there are always a few words I don't understand and I have to listen to it a few times.
But I don't care, she sounds very lovely. I hope she continues singing in different languages.
Maybe you can encourage her again to try a French song when seeing her in Buxton?
