Hello everybody! I listened to Classic FM's Newsnight last night, but the feature on 'Music of the Spheres' was rather disappointing. There was no mention of Hayley, and the track that was played sounded like a reworking of 'Tubular Bells'. I'll reserve final judgement until I've heard more. Richard

The album gets better with every play. It would surely reach No. 1 in the classical charts (for Christmas) if it was classified as classical which Mike Oldfield believes that it is. Dave - how do you classify classical? Hi Drew, I've only just noticed your question, from some time ago. I see no reason why this should not count for the UK classical charts - the involvement of Karl Jenkins certainly helps as he is a "recognised classical composer". Special agreement will have to be given for Mike Oldfield but I don't think there will be a problem there, it's probably already been agreed. Unlike the original version of Tubular Bells, this one is recorded entirely with a classical orchestra. Yes, I think it will go straight to no. 1 in the classical charts and it should stay there for some time at the time of year it's going to be released. Incidentally, the current release date is 8th March 2008 and it wouldn't surprise me if the delay is partly because the entire promo album was released onto the Internet several months ago. Internet pirates have a lot to answer for. I wonder if some changes are going to be made to the final mix, to render the leaked promos less valuable? I certainly hope so (if it doesn't involve Hayley!). The promo video which includes Hayley is also available here at Amazon UK I think this album will provide a small boost for Hayley in the charts, when released. This would become a big boost if Radio 2 chooses On My Heart as a track on their playlists, or if Hayley is featured at all in TV advertising or interviews (I think she will be back in the UK by then). I am hoping the new UK release date was partly influenced by Hayley's availability at that time - well you never know! Cheers, Dave

Hi everyone, The problem is - even if the song 'On my heart' is used for promotional purpose, it's not absolutely certain that Hayley will be credited. In the 2008 Classical album, her name wasn't mentioned (only 'By Mike Oldfield'). I've read a few reviews on Mike Oldfield's fan forums and they all noticed it, saying it wasn't truly fair for Hayley. I'm sure we all agree with them Stephany

Hi Dave
Many thanks for providing the link to the video clip on Amazon. Although we don't hear much of Hayley, at least she has been included. For me, Hayley's vocals on "On My Heart" remind me of 'Jekyll' and 'Flood' and I think the sound Hayley creates is amazing.
Another album I will have to get.
Best wishes Grant

The correct way to credit Hayley on this track (well two tracks in fact) and the album is, in my opinion, "featuring Hayley Westenra" (and Lang Lang, for the album). Nothing less should be accepted and I hope Bedlam Management will fight Hayley's corner on this. Maybe we should, too. Cheers, Dave

Hi everyone, There is an interview with Mike Oldfield in the property section of the Mail On Sunday today. It mainly talks about his home in Majorca and how he enjoys making music without pressure any more. I'll quote the interesting paragraph: "With his all new classical album completed, Oldfield can relax. It took him nine months to create the work, which involved 86 musicians, including pianist Lang Lang and singer Hayley Westenra. The album has the trademark Oldfield tintinnabulations and is about 'the ancient theory that every celestial body, the sun, the moon, and the stars, has an inner music."So only 2 of the 86 musicians mentioned

Hi all, A few months ago, I mentioned the rumour of a concert in Spain for the launch of 'Music of the Spheres' with a possible appearance of Hayley. Universal has now confirmed that the concert will be in Bilbao on March 7, 2008 but it's still unknown whether Hayley will participate or not. For more info, keep an eye on Tubular.net. Stephany

Hi everyone Also check out www.mikeoldfield.comwhere the release date of the album is now confirmed as 17 March 2008. On the home screen you can hear four or five clips of music from the album - it certainly sounds like his best possibly since Tubular Bells. On My Heart is gorgeous. If you go to the News page and scroll down, he also talks of collaborating with "the legendary soprano, Hayley Westenra" Cheers Colin

I'm quoting this post from the Bilbao concert thread, because it really belongs in this thread. Hello,
About the album and Hayley collaboration i found an article on an italian site. Here's the translation.
Mike Oldfield, spring delay january 08 2008 delayed to spring 2008 the release of Oldfield's next album "music of the spheres" Spl80 said the album release was imminent already back in 2007. It's an awesome work featuring famous artists from around the world, and every thing must in its right place. Mike Oldfield comeback album is titled "music of the spheres" its title showcases the scientific inspiration behind this new suggestive record. An ancient philosophical concept, probably belonging to Pitagora, says that music is something reacting to the movement of the sun, the moon and the planets. The mass of stars and the structure of nature itself shapes music. So music is not something to just listen to, but also math, philosophy and harmony. But more than complex explanations, what's important is, for Oldfield, the result: an album full of magic and wonderful sounds. Oldfield says Holst, Rachmaninov, Steve Reich and William Orbit has been his inspiration, but the truth is he's a very unique artist. This is what lies in his incoming work: orchestra and choir, thrilling guitar solos, the legendary sopran Hayley Westenra and the pianist Lang Lang. Music of The Spheres, in stores from November, is epic, sweet, andante and triumphant. Another masterpiece, in a career almost 35 years long.
The interest thing is that Hayley is called a "legendary soprano".. and Hayley is almost unknown here. Will the song "On My Heart" and this collaboration be able to bring new people to discover Hayley? I really hope so... I've also tried to listen the song on Mike's site but it doesn't seems to work
