Thanks for the great info, Drew! That will be something to ask to Hayley tomorrow at Stoke-in-Trent (or Telford!). Here is a quick translation of the first article :
. Mike Oldfield is recording at Abbey Road studios today and tomorrow with Karl Jenkins, Hayley Westenra and orchestra. Hayley Westenra will possibly be the main vocalist in Oldfiel's new project. More info will erase all the doubts soon.
Here is a partial translation of the second article. For obvious reasons, I only translated the passage about "Music of the Spheres".

Hi Drew and Stephany,
Thanks for the information and translation. We will endeavour to extract further information from Bedlam as soon as possible (perhaps tomorrow). If Hayley is to have a fairly prominent role in the alnum, we will move this thread inot its own sub-board. Otherwise, it may go to the general section of the Albums board. Time will tell!

Thank you, Roger! I just posted a message in Spanish on David's site, who initially posted the news, to ask if it was an official announcement or not. That said, if it turns out to be true, I will be really amazed by how varied Hayley's work has been in the last few months. She never stops to surprise me! Stephany

In the short interview after her performance, Hayley did mention she "...... had a few projects in the pipeline", although she only mentioned West Side Story by name. Maybe this is one of the others.
Best wishes Grant

I registered to the "Amarok" mailing list to view the original message. It was the following statement :

Hi Folks. Wow ! Mike Oldfield. I think he changed the whole direction of popular music in the seventies, He made it acceptable for teenagers to be listening to "Semi classical" or real music with the first Tubular bells and Hergest Ridge then the more Celtic Ommadawn with Sally Oldfield
What a combination Jenkins, Oldfield and Hayley .. Cool.......
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....................
Time to wallow in the 12 inch vinyl again.. Ha haha

Here is a partial translation of the second article. For obvious reasons, I only translated the passage about "Music of the Spheres". Thanks Drew and Stephany, If the story and the bit I highlighted is correct, it is possible that Oldfield's new album will be eligible for the classical charts in the UK, and the classical or classical crossover charts elsewhere. In the UK, it would need special permission from the Official Charts Company to qualify as classical, because Oldfield is not a "recognised classical composer". But Jenkins is... these days anyway. So his involvement will definitely help. It sounds like another exciting project for Hayley, if true. I 'bought' Tubular Bells (original version) a few weeks ago as a free giveaway CD with the Mail on Sunday. Cheers, Dave

If it is predominantly a Mike Oldfield album, does it need to appear in the classical charts in order to sell well? Surely he has a huge following, albeit from old timers seasoned music lovers like us to do equally well from the pop charts? This may surprise some members who know me well, but I bought Tubular Bells soon after it was released too. I wasn't all sophisticated like Mark with his cassette player though. My copy was one of those big round black vinyl things! Roger

If it is predominantly a Mike Oldfield album, does it need to appear in the classical charts in order to sell well? Roger No but it would encourage Hayley's 'classical' fanbase (in the UK) to buy it and it could well get Hayley a performance at next year's Classical Brits. There would be more feedback into Hayley's own album sales, especially Odyssey and Treasure. I mentioned it as Oldfield would then be the latest in a lengthening line of old pop and rock stars to turn their hand to writing and performing classical music. There is Jenkins himself, Paul McCartney, Sting and now, possibly, Mike Oldfield. Also, if Oldfield does intend it to be a classical album, Hayley's involvement would definitely help its sales in the UK. Sting's classical effort has sold 50,000 (less even than Treasure so far). Paul McCartney has sold less than 20,000 with Ecce Cor Meum. Even Karl Jenkins has sold less than 150,000 with his blockbuster The Armed Man and that's taken five years! That's much less than both editions of Odyssey in the UK. If it's intended as classical, I think you can see why they need Hayley in this as much as she needs them! Cheers, Dave
