Sometimes, when I click on a thread or board, it comes up with a page that says something like 'you are trying to access a page that does not exist.' Does this happen for anyone else?

that's what I did when I switched to this browser. I'm not trying to post messages, just look at the board's contents or the contents of the thread. It seems that the page is lost until I hit reload. Next time it happens I will give a complete report.

Hi Northern Lights,
If it happens when you click on a thread or a board, I am soory to say I can't explain it. If it happens when yuou click on a link within a post, then it is possible that the destination thread has been moved. As you say it appears after you reload, I guess it isn't that.
Sure, let us know more details if it happens again. Hopefully, it won't!
Roger

I wouldn't worry about a glitch of that sort unless it was happening very frequently. If it is a general Web error, there could be many many reasons. A technician would want to know whether you are on a LAN, what sort of firewall you are behind, whether you are using proxies, etc, etc. I have lurked here before I signed up and never had a problem, and with the absence of anyone else mentioning it, I does seem, I'm afraid, that whatever it is is a problem at your end, not with the software here.

Hi Northern Lights, You have me baffled too. You shouldn't be getting links anywhere near as long as the one you quoted, the normal format is about this length: hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Miscellaneous&thread=1195522600&page=1#1197894023 or you can miss out the last bit so hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Miscellaneous&thread=1195522600 should work, too. This is the thread your "big link" is trying to connect you to... and my "short" versions work so the thread is there. As none of us can reproduce the error, I fear that we cannot solve the problem. As others have said, there seems to be something unusual about your browser or an add-on or your computer that is partly incompatible with Proboards software and is causing these huge links to be generated sometimes. But I have no idea what... sorry! All I can suggest is that you try it with a different browser to see if that works better. Cheers, Dave

Weird... What browser are you using, incidently? It doesn't seem to be parsing the link properly. What is selected under View/encoding?

ok, so the second link works now (that's what I modified my post for, to edit it) Actually, some of the extraneous stuff in that link is Java code. 1) Do you have Java and Java script enabled? 2) Do you have the latest version of Java installed? Bit of a guess, but the board does use a lot of Java and you have Java variables in the link you posted, suggesting that your browser is not activating Java.

my browser is Opera. Until 5 or 6 days ago, I had Firefox, which never gave me this problem.
I don't believe I have the latest Java, but I think I have some. As I always am confused by the word enabled, I'm not sure.

I'm using Opera too.
Just in case it's one of these settings, go to Tools/Preferences and then click the Advanced Tab. Then at the left click "content" and make sure that the checkboxes next to the options that come up are all checked.
Then go down the left to "cookies" and check "accept all cookies".
Then go down the left to network and make sure the box next to "encode all international Web addresses with UTF-8 is checked.
Then make sure that "enable automatic redirection is checked".
There are also two boxes, one for maximum connections to a server, that I have set to 16, and one for max total connections that I have set to 20.
As well as these I would go to the View Menu and under Encoding select "automatic".
I am afraid that I am not saying that setting these (they may all conform to what I have said already) will solve your problem, but setting them will eliminate most browser settings as the cause of your problem.

you're using Opera??!! Then we have 3 Opera users on the forum!
What does enable mean? I don't have Java enabled, but I have cookies enabled.
I think that the definition will help me fix this problem- and btw, a couldn't find some of the things you told me to click on. I assume that you're using a Windows or Mac Opera then?

Enable means turn it on - make it ready to operate... Here I simply mean that the checkbox next to the "Enable Java" setting should have a tick in it. If you don't have Java enabled, I really would try to make sure that you do check (tick) that box next to the setting. This forum and many other sites use a lot of Java. I am using a Windows Opera, under WinXP. If you are using Linux my ability to help you may be limited. Not that I have anything against Linux, just that I have no experience with it. I have come to use Opera more than other browsers, but I also use Firefox, Netscape 8.1, Netscape 9, and IE. Both Netscapes have some nice features that I wish the others had. I run all of these because I am making some webpages and need to see if they are working ok in all of them.
