Teen singer hits the right note By EMMA PAGE - Sunday Star Times | Sunday, 14 October 2007.
Studying for exams is Elizabeth Marvelly's priority this week but in December the Kiwi teenager will sing for the stars at the premiere of Nicole Kidman's latest blockbuster, The Golden Compass.
The King's College boarding student will perform at the charity gala organised by celebrity jeweller Michelle Ong, whose Hollywood clients include Kate Winslet and Glenn Close. She got the gig after recently signing a record deal with EMI London.
Marvelly, 18, is excited about meeting Kidman, her acting hero, who will be attending the Hong Kong premiere with co-star Daniel Craig, the most recent face of James Bond in Casino Royale.
"It's going to be something incredible that I'll remember for a long time."
She started giving impromptu performances for her parents at age four, but the pop-classical singer hit New Zealand headlines when she toured the country with Dame Malvina Major and Sir Howard Morrison last year. Both performers have inspired her.
But the 18-year-old also admires fellow Kiwi singer Anika Moa. Major is second on her iPod playlist after American pop singer Fergie.
Manager Gray Bartlett, who discovered Hayley Westenra, says Marvelly has the talent, looks and personality to make it on the world stage.
Her self-titled album will be in stores in early December before being released internationally.
Bartlett says Marvelly is "very grounded" and manages to juggle her career, studies and school responsibilities - she is a prefect and captain of the girls' 1st XI.
She says growing up in Rotorua and watching her parents working hard at the Princess Gate Hotel has helped her establish a good work ethic. Her parents will travel with her to Hong Kong in December.
Marvelly plans to concentrate on her singing career next year but hopes to study drama, law and English literature at university.

Hi Belinda and Raymond!
Thank you both for the info.
I've listened, and listened, and listened ... And I really like what I hear! Impressive singer: lovely voice, pleasant, meaningful and uplifting ...
'Hoki Hoki Tonu Mai' (a love-song) is fantastic ... Not unlike Hayley's 'Hine e Hine' and 'Pokarekare Ana'.
EMI were wise to sign her ... A young lady to watch out for, I feel ....
Regards,
Paddy

Just been having a listen myself... have to say say I'm very impressed, she does have a wonderful voice, and "Hoki Hoki Tonu Mai" is a lovely and quite emotional song. Hopefully with the talent she has she will go on to achieve the recognition she deserves. Thanks Belinda and Raymond for posting this info. Best wishes David

Her self-titled album will be in stores in early December before being released internationally. Well, I'll have my parents keep an eye out for the album.. as for Gray being her manager; surprise, surprise. There are very few ways of being noticed whilst in NZ, and it's usually either Gray or Ray Columbus floating somewhere close.. ~C

This article was in todays NZ Sunday News (21st Oct). I saw Elizabeth sing when there was a concert in Christchurch a while ago with Dame Malvina Major, Sir Howard Morrison, Elizabeth Marvelly and Ben Morrison ( the young violinist who was in the same class in school as Hayley). Elizabeth was exceptionally good and I for one will buy her album.

www.scoop.co.nz/stories/CU0711/S00058.htmSchoolgirl Captivates Millions Tuesday, 6 November 2007, 10:14 am Press Release: KIWI schoolgirl Elizabeth Marvelly will enjoy audiences numbering in their millions over the next month. The 18-year-old soprano from Rotorua has been signed to join a stellar lineup of stars at Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park in Auckland and the 60th Anniversary Smith City Santa Parade in Christchurch as well as the spectacular Carols by Candlelight in Sydney - one of the state's biggest annual events. For the Auckland event, to be held in the Domain on December 8 and expected to draw a crowd of around 200,000, Elizabeth will sing Hark the Herald Angels Sing while in Christchurch on December 2 she will sing three songs before hundreds of thousands of merry-makers lining the street. Additionally, she will entertain an A-list of Hollywood stars in Hong Kong during jeweler to the stars Michelle Ong's annual variety gala on December 16. The gala will celebrate the premiere of Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig's latest blockbuster, The Golden Compass and with stars including Glen Close, Kate Winslett, Dakota Blue Richards and Eva Green known to be on the guest list. On Sunday she appeared as the guest star at the prestigious New Zealand Arias - an event - an event known as an international springboard for young stars including Hayley Westenra and violinist Ben Morrison. And on November 19 she will join a who's who of sports and entertainers at the Emirates Team New Zealand gala dinner in aid of the Starship Foundation. Guest speakers will include Grant Dalton and Dean Barker, master of ceremonies is TV personality John Campbell and fellow musician Annabel Fay will also perform songs from her debut album. For more details go to www.galadinner.co.nzElizabeth - recently named the Variety Artists Club Rising Star of 2007 will sing several songs from her debut, self-titled album which will officially be released on November 29 and in stores around New Zealand on December 3. She is currently finishing recording the album for EMI Classics London under the direction of industry veteran Carl Doy, in between sitting her university entrance exams. Elizabeth is being hailed as the new singing sensation, and it appears justly so. Only three New Zealanders have had international recording contracts with EMI Classics in the last ten years, Elizabeth being the third and most recent. Under the astute guidance of Gray Bartlett MBE and NZEA Ltd, whose stable of discoveries include Hayley Westenra, Yulia, Ben Morrison and Will Martin, Elizabeth was presented to EMI (UK) President of Classics and Jazz, Costa Pilavachi, as the face and voice of the future, in cross-over classical-pop. "Elizabeth Marvelly has the excitement and wide-range of talent to very quickly be a world star," says Bartlett. "Her abilities range from acting, drama, public speaking through to singing and stage. She is my greatest discovery yet."
