Hello all, Just out of curiosity.... Why in heaven's name doesnt Josh have his own suboard here? He is a classical crossover singer, right? And he is rapidly approching 20 million albums sold. Seems kinda odd. Seriously, I never really got into Josh - until maybe six months ago, I began to research him in an attempt to figure out what he was doing right. As the research has gone on, so has my admiration for the man. Here is another example of "peripheral" skills www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x7Mi1chCDgJon

Hi Jon, There is no doubt that Josh Groban is a very popular and gifted singer. However, due to the current number of other artists' sub-boards, we aren't planning to create more at the present time. Seems kinda odd. Hi Jon, Just to add a bit more detail to what Joe said (thanks Joe, I didn't know you were about to post when i wrote the following!) We decided some time ago to limit the number of Other Artists sub-boards to 20 and even that seems to be too many, based on the numbers of posts that some have - so it may be further reduced (if not already, I haven't done a count today). Any "big name" singer who generates a lot of interest and posts consistently will be considered for his or her own sub-board in our periodic reviews. However, Josh does not at the moment seem to be anywhere near to generating "a lot of interest and posts". I have no idea why that is. I should mention that quite a lot of the sub-boards here are for up-and-coming or 'hopeful' singers who have an established connection with HWI or the forum so in effect we have two sets of criteria. They, too, are reviewed periodically to see if continuing the sub-boards is justified. However, there is no limit on the number of different singers for whom a thread can be started in "Other Music" and those threads provide a useful guage of the current and past level of interest in the singer. Cheers, Dave

This performance is scheduled to be aired on PBS sometime in June. I attended the Awake concert in Seattle in August (the week before the DVD was recorded), and it was a wonderful show! Of course, being in the front row helped. [/size]

Yes, I am pleased. So, how do you like it? You would probably like his "Noel" album, too. Did you know it was the best-selling album of 2007, and it didn't even come out until November! Speaking of which, "Noel" is nominated for a Grammy! TRADITIONAL POP FIELD Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album nominees are: Still Unforgettable - Natalie Cole The Sinatra Project - Michael Feinstein Noel - Josh GrobanIn The Swing Of Christmas - Barry Manilow Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall - Rufus Wainwright I would think Josh would win it since the album so successful.

Hi Libby
I didn't buy the new album but I'm really looking forward to hearing Josh's performance in "Chess - the concert". It was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall and I can't wait to buy the DVD and CD. It stars Kerry Ellis, Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal - three of my favourite performers in musical theatre - so it can't do wrong!

I've seen Josh live in concert, was in the front row. He is a real talent. Not only did he sing flawlessly throughout, he took his hand at several instruments. His drum solo was awesome!
But most of all, he is FUNNY. When he chatted with the audience everyone was in hysterics. A fan threw a British flagged hat on the stage and he wore it throughout a few songs. He also came out and walked along the aisles and let everyone shake his hand and he sang.
Lovely man, lovelier voice. His songs can be a bit mushy for my tastes, but when he gets the right tracks there's no stopping him.
Also: I wouldn't class him as crossover. Nothing he does is even remotely classical. He has tackled only one aria in his three albums. He is just an adult contemporary/pop artist. A male Celine Dion, if you like. He is more pop than anything else.

Even in his TV interviews, he always manages to find something funny to say! At the concert here, someone gave him his very own Starbuck's apron, with "Josh" on the front. He assumed a weird, nerdy voice and said things like "Would you like soy with that?" Lately he has been saying that he thinks of himself as a pop artist, with classical and world music influences. I think the mistake people make calling him a classical artist is because of his voice, and he sings songs in Italian. But being in Italian doesn't make it classical, or opera.

I'm not really a fan of his, but he was quite funny on the BBC music quiz 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' last week. (Some strong language though).
Edit: I deleted the YouTube link, because the language is too strong for this forum. Richard

...You would probably like his "Noel" album, too. Did you know it was the best-selling album of 2007, and it didn't even come out until November! Yes, in the US and some other parts of the World, Josh is phenomenally successful - but surprisingly, he has so far not been able to "crack" the UK market. However, he is making increasingly determined efforts to do so, I think he's been in the UK more this year than ever before... including appearances at the Classical Brits, the Royal Variety Performance and several breakfast and chat shows over the last few weeks. He is still here and even popped up on the National Lotto show this evening to set the balls rolling! He said he "will be working on the new album early next year and which hopefully, will be released in the late summer". It will be interesting to see what effect his efforts have on the chart position next week of his current UK album - A Collection (currently at no. 26, its highest chart position to date). Regarding the genre of his albums, whilst none of them have qualified for the UK classical charts, all of them have to date qualified for the Billboard Classical Crossover chart (which encompasses a broader range of music than the UK classical charts) so I think we have to count him as a classical crossover singer - who crosses over more than most! Hi Dave,
That's very interesting - I also wonder how well Josh is doing in the UK charts. He will be presenting next week's "Friday Night is Music Night" which is a special Disney concert. I think Josh is a fine singer but he didn't impress me that much at the Classical Brits.
I love some of his albums though so I'd be very curious to hear him sing his own material in concert. Libby, do you know if there's a tour planned for Europe anytime soon?
