Complaints spark public meeting

Local people will have the chance to voice their concerns over plans to stage a huge outdoor classical concert in Dunkeld later this year
Up to 6000 music fans are expected to swarm to the Perthshire town for the landmark charity event on September 1, headlined by classical superstar Hayley Westenra.
The concert, entitled “A Truly Scottish Evening,” is in aid of the Anthony Nolan Trust, a leading leukaemia charity. The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, massed pipes and drums, Celtic dancers and an aerobatics wing walking display team are also set to appear at the concert.
Some local people are concerned about holding the concert in the grounds of the Hilton Dunkeld House. It will be the largest ever event to be staged in the small Perthshire town.
Local resident James Mackay told the PA: “I am 50/50 on this. Having an event in Perth and Kinross on this scale is an amazing achievement for the area.
“It’s great that a classical concert is going to raise a lot of money for charity, but I question if it is being held in the right place. While I accept it is a wonderful event, I do worry how Dunkeld will cope.
“On the recent bank holidays when we had good weather, the approach roads to Dunkeld on the A9 were all blocked. How will the town cope with an additional 6000 people and 2000 cars? I am not sure why the promoters didn’t choose somewhere like Scone Palace.”
Residents have also raised concerns about the effect on the local environment and the substantial noise levels that the concert will produce.
George Walker Event Management, promoters of the event, have decided to hold a public meeting to discuss all the concerns on Thursday, April 26 at the Hilton Dunkeld House at 7pm. All locals are invited to attend.
George Walker told the PA: “We decided to choose Dunkeld over other sites like Scone Palace because we feel the area is a particularly attractive setting.
“We have been working closely from the outset with Perth and Kinross Council, the Dunkeld and Birnam Tourist Association, Hilton, Tayside Police and Event Scotland. We have also been in constant discussions with the council’s roads department and the hotel, and everyone is behind us 100%.
“This concert is not a rave, and it’s not T in the Park. It’s a evening of quality classical music. We hope the meeting will answer all the public’s questions, as we hope the concert does not just raise money for the charity, but contribute to the local economy.”
Initial approaches for permission have been made to Perth and Kinross Council, but the authority has asked the organisers to submit more detail on the event before the Hilton Hotel has its application for a Public Entertainment Licence reviewed by councillors. If sufficient detail is presented, the request will go in front of the council’s licensing committee after the election.
Headline act Hayley Westenra is one of the world’s leading classical artists since her debut international album ‘Pure’ was the fastest-selling classical album of all time.
She has performed in front of the Queen and has worked with Bryn Terfel, who headlines the Perth Arts Festival this summer.
Concert-goers will be invited to bring their own picnics. The concert will begin at 7pm and finish at around 10.15pm.
Tickets will be on sale soon from Aberdeen and Perth box offices. For further information, visit www.georgewalkerevents.co.uk
