A ‘Truly’ Scottish night for charity

A STELLAR line-up including top young classical singer Hayley Westenra is set to attract music-lovers to picturesque Dunkeld on September 1 for a charity fund-raiser for the Anthony Nolan Trust in Scotland.

Organisers of ‘A Truly Scottish Evening’ open-air concert — to be held in the grounds of the Hilton Dunkeld House — aim to raise a staggering £58,000 for the charity which provides lifesaving donors for leukaemia patients in need of a bone marrow transplant.

John McLaughlin, manager of Hilton Dunkeld House, and concert promoter George Walker are looking forward to bringing together the crème de la crème of Scottish entertainment for the open-air live concert by Dunkeld Cathedral.

One of the highlights of the weekend will see mass pipes and drums along with Celtic dancers taking to the stage joined by aerobatic displays and the top-class musicians of The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra.

Headlining the concert is world-renowned classical singer Hayley Westenra accompanied by the Aberdeen Sinfonietta.

Hayley has performed for the rich and famous, including The Queen, President Bush, Tony Blair and Prince Charles.

“The event will be very much family orientated,” said John McLaughlin, manager of the Hilton Dunkeld House.

“We will be encouraging people to bring along picnics and enjoy an early evening of food and socialising and then sit back in a beautiful setting for some superb music and entertainment.”

David and Hayley share charity date

BUDDIE David Sneddon will team up with Britain’s top selling classical songstress Hayley to raise thousands of pounds for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

The 29-year-old pop idol from Dykebar will join Hayley Westenra at historic Dunkeld Cathedral for the Truly Scottish Weekend which will be attended by thousands of spectators.

David, a former pupil at Gleniffer High School leapt to prominence by winning the ITV talent show Fame Academy in 2002.

He then went on to score a UK Number One hit with Stop Living The Lie which sold 25.000 copies.

After his debut album, Seven Years – Ten Weeks, made it to number five in the charts, David concentrated on carving out a career as a songwriter.

Now his Scottish fans will get an opportunity to see and hear him sing on Saturday, September 1, at the concert which features other leading musicians and is being promoted by the Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel.

Money raised from the event will help fund the work of the Anthony Nolan Trust, which manages one of the largest bone marrow registers in the world and helps to prevent people from dying of leukaemia, which is cancer of the blood.

Bedlam Management have now confirmed that this event is cancelled. It has been judged that the sales revenue in conjunction with the costs did not make it a viable proposition for a charity fund-raising event.

Well that's strange!!

We did tell Hayley at Grassington that our daughter was getting married on 1st September 2007. Maybe Hayley felt it necessary to change her plans. Don't remember sending an invite though!
But seriously, I am sorry for our Scottish fans that it has been cancelled.

It is a long way from Shepherd's Bush and I do not imagine that HWI or the other Kiwis will allow Hayley an early night on 31st August.

Perhaps somebody could arrange for a few buckets to be taken to the Empire to collect for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Hi All,

Yes the Dunkeld event has definitely been cancelled... and this is certainly not Hayley's (or Bedlam Management's) decision!!! David "The Flying Scotsman" phoned me on my mobile at work this morning almost close to tears to tell me that he had phoned 'George Walker Events Management' to ascertain as to whether payment had been received for his ticket... I'm sure David will fill us in here, but he was told in no uncertain terms that the Event had been cancelled due to insufficient tickets being sold. I found this all rather hard to swallow myself- since the equivalent event held last year was apparently very successful. All afternoon I left messages on George Walker's mobile phone asking him to return my call - my message was simply that "I had an enquiry about the 'Truly Scottish Evening' Event"... At 4:55pm George eventually got back to me and I just let him speak... He told me that this charity driven event had been cancelled due to the fact that there hadn't been sufficient corporate interest - i.e. companies/ business groups investing in the venture and for that reason alone a collective business decision had to be taken to cancel the Event to prevent it from being run at a financial loss... I know this is all very sad news. I asked George if he had ever heard Hayley sing live before- he answered "no, but Hayley is going to be involved in one of our other events next May in Aberdeenshire". I told him I was absolutely "gutted!" to hear about the cancellation and that we were all really going to miss out on something extra special this year - Hayley's headlining appearance at the event. I asked George if one of the reasons why there had been insufficient ticket sales was due to poor advertising/ promotion - volunteers offering to distribute flyers and posters... and he told me that he had a number of reliable volunteers already but would always be grateful for more people to help- so of course I have added my name to George's list of concert promoters/ advertisers and no doubt David will do the same. We will do our very best to recruit some more people to distribute flyers and posters well in advance of next May's performance too... and totally "blanket post" every nook and cranny possible with concert posters for next May's Event... I regret to admit that I somehow took for granted the fact that the promotion for this year's event was going to be as successful as last year's was... Unfortunately due to a lack of corporate interest in the Event, we are all really going to miss out this time...

I repeat - from my understanding, cancellation of this Event was not Hayley's decision or Bedlam Management's decision...

Hi all,

Unfortunately everything said here by Roger and Andrew is correct. It was this morning when I phoned George Walker Management to check what had happened with the payment I had sent them nearly two weeks ago that I was told that the concert had been cancelled due to a failure to sell enough tickets to make the event financially viable. As Andrew says, I then phoned him to tell him the bad news, both of us gutted by this point , and afterwards sent Roger a PM informing him of what had happened. My understanding is that letters will be sent to those who had bought tickets confirming the cancellation.

From speaking to GWM, it is clear to me that the cancellation of this event is nothing to do with Hayley or Bedlam Management, and I'm sure that they will be as disappointed as anyone by what has happened.

May I send my apologies to our Scottish fans and to those from elsewhere who were planning to come to Scotland for this event. Hopefully I will not have to be the bearer of such news in the future.

I believe the event in Aberdeenshire is the concert at Breda House with the Glenn Miller Orchestra on 31st May 2008, rescheduled from 6th September this year. Information is rather sparse at the moment, but there is a thread about it HERE.
