Hi All,
The Leipzig Gala is going to be very interesting. It will feature the premiere a duet of José Carreras and Elton John. Young Israeli singer Liel will participate (I have featured her at the Young Classical Performers site) - and, of course, Hayley will participate as well. I will be watching and recording the programme. José often does duets with his guests on this Gala, so here's hoping there will be a surprise!

Hi Richard,
The broadcast will start in an hour - and it is not a pre-recorded show - it's actually live. So, they will broadcast Hayley!

Hi All, As I am writing this, the Gala is still being broadcast - and Hayley appeared about 45 minutes ago. Here is a clip of her performance. She was introduced as an artist José knew very well, as he had performed with her, and also the she was the youngest UNICEF Ambassador ever ( I provide those details before anyone starts asking what the announcer said at the beginning ). www.hayley-westenra-international.net/hwi/clips/zo05/pokarekaraanaleipzig151205.wmvI have only one quibble why yet AGAIN Pokarekare Ana? I was hoping so much Hayley would do a song she hasn't done very often - there are so many choices from both Pure and Odyssey. I really think she should step over to some other theme song - she really is overdoing this Pokarekare Ana business ... Gerrit

What did she say at the beginning, Gerrit? Eh? It's in the post above this one? Why did she say that? Oh, I see what you mean. Right, start again..... Why did she sing 'Pokarekare Ana' again? Well, the event was in Germany where Pure was released significantly later than it was in the UK and elsewhere in the world. And Odyssey has not yet been released there (has it?). In that case, the good people of Germany (other than Lothar and Holger, of course) would still be wanting and expecting her to sing 'Pokarekare Ana' just like we did a year ago. Well, that's as good an answer as you're going to get out of me! Actually, I don't mind how often she sings it because I love it to bits. Many thanks for the video, Gerrit and so swiftly available too! Roger

Thanks for making that available Gerrit, I love it! I never object when Hayley sings Pokarekare Ana, no Hayley concert is the same without it and she always sings it beautifully! Incidentally, earlier today I found my self singing along with my daughter (for the first time in ages) and we were trying to see if we could remember all the Maori lyrics to... Pokarekare Ana. If it was a premonition of what was to come, that is SCARY! And before anyone asks, yes... we DID get the lyrics right - after a couple of restarts admittedly, but all from memory! Cheers and thanks again for the video, Dave

Well, I am sorry, but I'm beginning to find Pokarekare Ana boring.
I think the early version on My Gift To You is unbeatable for sparkle. I think that sparkle is missing from recent versions of this song.
Oh, and I did expect the comment that this was for a German audience, which hasn't heard Hayley all that often.
That's not really the point that I want to make. Hayley is performing Pokarekare Ana so often, she is going to have more and more problems putting some real sparkle into her performances of this song. No matter how hard she tries, I think she is in a bit of a rut with this song.
To be honest, tonight's version did nothing to enthuse me.
Hayley should take up the challenge of trying something new, also in public performances. Regardless of whether the German public hasn't heard Pokarekare Ana too often (which I think is Decca's fault for putting more than two years between Pure and Odyssey), they haven't heard any other songs by Hayley all that often either. In fact, they would have heard most other songs never at all.
So I can see plenty of reasons for Hayley to tackle another song on her public appearances ....
Sorry - but this is just the way I see it.

Thank you for the video Gerrit! I really enjoyed that performance of Pokarekare Ana. It was a little bit different, and I admired Hayley for the way she calmly carried on, even though the stage was on fire! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest Wishes from London, Richard

It's a song that fits Hayley's voice perfectly. I don't necessarily mean that in a good way because I find it a pretty song but the tempo and dynamics and just so uniform throughout.

Hi all, Some words about Hayley’s appearance at José Carreras Gala yesterday: Yes, Hayley was singing “Pokarekare Ana” and my question was also – why this song again, why this song at this Gala, why this song for this target group? Hayley was singing this song very well as every time of course, but she did it on October, 17 th 2004 on German TV and in Duisburg at opening ceremony of the “World Games” also and now again, why? I have no answer. You must know the target group of Josè-Carreras-show are at first people who are interested in listening classical music in general, but also people who are fans of Elton John, Ich+Ich, Peter Maffay, Xavier Naidoo etc.-people who enjoy a kind of music which is more like pop music. So yesterday this was a chance to offer a Hayley Westenra who could be interesting for these people also – but not when she is singing “Pokarekare Ana”. On “Pure” are some songs which are suitable like “Beat of your heart” or “Who painted the moon black” – or from “Odyssey” the songs “What you never know” or “Never saw blue” which are not so much simple but not real classical songs also. Sure there are a lot of reasons pro and contra “Pokarekare Ana” and it is not easy to do a right decision. The response of the audience was quite restrained. Also I think the performance of Hayley was quite simply then other singers, like in example Lena Valaitis. She was singing on a table with flames around the table moved up with her some meters during her singing - and was more attractive than Hayley’s performance. This is no critic on Hayley by herself – it is a question of the presentation of Hayley which is made by the directors of the production of the show. Also it would be interesting to discuss all such questions with Steve … . It would be interesting to know why the decision was for “Pokarekare Ana” etc. On german TV (Videotext) was written that José-Carreras-Show was watched by about 4.51 Mio. people that equals 15% of all TV-viewers at this time yesterday in Germany. We will see if this show with Hayley’s performance has any consequences of her ranging at amazon or of her number of sold CDs. Kind regards, Lothar

Interesting thoughts, Lothar.
I hadn't considered the issue of the target audience myself - and honestly, from a marketing point of view, this appearance is badly planned anyway. Pure was released a long time ago in Germany, and I don't think it caught on. Odyssey isn't going to be released in Germany fpr a long time either ....
Then again, I presume management will try to tie in marketing of Odyssey in Germany with Hayley's participation in the Il Divo tour, next April/May?
