I have a strong suspicion that reviewers are editorially selected for and are encouraged to write negative reviews about Hayley - their home town girl - in order to stir up public feelings and sell more newspapers. Dave I think that is highly likely. It must be frustrating for those poor reporters and editors who search for some unsavoury side to Hayley's character only to discover time and time again that there isn't one. So, they resort to criticising her repertoire in the expectaion that the resulting *scandal* will sell more newspapers. Shame on them. Roger

Belinda, That's AWESOME... You are obviously one of Hayley's nearest and dearest. Your moral support is certainly appreciated! That's lovely that HWI was included in the credits too! Andrew X Hey, Congratulations Belinda. How I would love to have seen your face when you first saw that. Give youself a pat on the back and always remember how proud we are to have you as a member of the team. It is very pleasing to see HWI being acknowledged again as we were in the last UK tour programme. But you just wait awhile. There are plans to mention us elsewhere in the future. Not saying where - you just wait and see, but if it happens, it's going to be big - VERY BIG. Yes I know, I'm horrible! Roger

Hi all, In terms of the negative newspaper critique, the expression, "suffering for one's art" springs to mind. This definitely oversteps the mark though! I only hope that Hayley is objective enough not to let them upset her. If they want to sell more newspapers, why don't they include a few more photos of Hayley in them instead? Andrew

Hi Andrew,
There are advantages to being as busy as Hayley is - she probably doesn't have time to read those reviews.
More photographs is a suggestion of which I thoroughly approve!
Roger

Congratulations on your mention in the brochure Belinda! As part of the HWI team, that effectively means you were mentioned twice, not counting Hayley's hand-written piece! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifAndrew, you've hit the nail on the head. Showing more pictures of Hayley and writing nice articles about her would definitely sell more newspapers without upsetting her fans! Best Wishes, Richard

Roger, Have you heard 'Las Sayas', Fiona Pear's first studio album? I was going to order a copy via Fiona's website before Christmas, but there were none in stock. I'll have another look to see whether the supplies have been replenished. They may have all sold out again though! I bought a copy of 'Doorways to Distant Lands' from Fiona after the last concert in Manchester. Fiona kindly signed this for me too You may be interested to know that Fiona told me that night that the live version of, 'Memories of Martin & Mary' which is included on the 'Doorways' CD was recorded at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester on the final 'official' night of Hayley's 'Winter Tour' of 'Pure' on 22nd Nov. 2004. You and I were both there although to this day, we still haven't met yet! Fiona really had her dancing shoes on that night, didn't she? Or had she kicked them off again? Andrew

Hi This apparent behaviour of "The Press" in Christchurch is just how the British Tabloid press behaves and I thought that - the denigration of successful British personalities at every opportunity - was a uniquely British problem. It would appear that in Christchurch, "The Press" has learned a thing or two about selling newspapers from the UK gutter press. It's probably quite widespread. I was quite surprised to find out how the Swedish tabloids can do this kind of thing as well. Sweden in general seems more civilised than that. I do not have a problem with negative reviews of Hayley concerts as such; everyone is entitled to air an opinion. But when there seems to be a pattern developing - an indication of possible ulterior motives as here - I will stand up and shout about it from the rooftops. I suspect you're probably right. And stupid as the whole thing is, it can be damaging if it becomes fashionable to knock a particular artist. People are easily led. I've recently watched someone I respect lose her contract because of a mix of several years tabloid stupidity and recent record company stupidity to match. I think Hayley is too strong internationally for that. Her good personal image is also probably much to her advantage. If her fan-base can widen without her being adopted by one exclusive group, she should outride anything the tabloids can throw at her (sorry for the mixed meaphor, BTW )

Hi Andrew,
Yes, I have both Fiona's CDs. To be honest, most of her repertoire is too jazzy for my taste - I prefer the more folky numbers which probably explains why I like 'Memories of Martin and Mary' so much. Yes, I did know it was recorded during the Manchester concert. In fact, it was recorded on camcorder by none other than Ian Tilley (pianist) and is included on Fiona's DVD. And before you ask, yes I've got that too!!!

Belinda,
As I think you will know, I LOVE Gospel songs!!! You are very privileged indeed to have heard Hayley singing 'I Say Grace'. :eek2: I don't think she sang that song on the UK leg of the last Tour...

Hayley didn't sing 'I say Grace' in the UK - at least, not during any of the concert that I attended. See Dave, my spreadsheets of miscellaneous Hayley information do come in useful! Roger

Does Hayley sing 'Ave Maria' "twice" in different keys during the same concert?? Hi Jeremiah, No, she doesn't. She sings two entirely different versions of the 'Ave Maria' - one by Schubert and one by Cacchini, both of which are absolutely gorgeous! I have to say, I largely concur with what is being said about Hayley's performance (and Odyssey itself) not being lively. And yes, Fiona's appearance does greatly contrast with this. However, I don't understand how anyone could feel sad after a concert, unless it is simply because it is over all too soon. Roger

Roger HI, I think it is normal that Hayley didn't sing 'I say grace' in her UK tour because 'I say grace' isn't included in the UK version of 'Odyssey'. Only big UK Hayley fan know this song. Raymond

Hi Raymond, You are quite right, 'I Say Grace' doesn't appear on the UK version of 'Odyssey'. You'll find it on the NZ version, Malaysian version or some of the Decca promotional 'Odyssey' CDs... I wonder why Hayley didn't surprise the UK with a rendition of this 'new' song on the Tour? I know it's not on the UK version of the CD, but so what? It might have encouraged more UK fans to buy more imported copies of 'Odyssey' and therefore boosted sales further... Maybe Decca will include 'I Say Grace' on a new release of a 2 CD 'Special Edition' version of 'Odyssey' like they did for 'Pure' before the year is out! Andrew
