.....How could someone be so negatively opinionated? Dori Hi Dori and everyone. Consider the possibility that things often get done with money. But, as Caitlin recently posted, "I shall remain silent on this subject". Regards, Gene

Hi Folks, I just listened to an article on the Radio 4 program 'Today' regarding Dame Kiri's comments, the interview was of Lesley Garrett and Rupert Christiansen of the Daily Telegraph, Lesley supporting Hayley and crossover and Rupert supporting Dame Kiri, the discussion was clearly won by Lesley, even the sports corespondent who followed commented " I think that was Lesley 1 - Rupert 0 Steve H Many thanks for the heads-up on that interview Steve, it's the best debate so far and it wasn't even in NZ! Hayley and her genre must have quite a few supporters in the UK media and music business as well as in NZ - Lesley Garrett included, she was excellent! Everyone should listen to this BBC radio discussion so i've made it easy - I've uploaded it here: Lesley Garrett on the Kiri-Hayley Debate (5m 49s). Cheers, Dave PS Gene, mentioning that (unreliable!) poll occasionally is OK, I just didn't want it taking over the thread.

Hi Dave, thanks for the link. They actually agreed on more than they disagreed....... if you listen carefully. They were not however saying things in such derogatory way as 'you know who'.

Hi Dave, thanks for the link. They actually agreed on more than they disagreed....... if you listen carefully. Hi Graham, I did! What's happening here is that some of the opera purists (including Dame Kiri and (until his final sentence) the Telegraph opera critic are not answering the question that is being asked! I found a transcript of the relevant part of Dame Kiri's interview with NZ Weekend Herald Canvas Supplement written by a Kiri supporter in the newsgroups. Here it is (and nobody has suggested that it's wrong): Does anyone have the complete article to verify or post? Anyway, as you can see... Dame Kiri did not answer the question and *that* is most of the problem. Nobody outside certain elements of the press has suggested that Hayley is an opera singer, trained or otherwise. When Lesley Garrett eventually got the Opera critic to answer the question originally asked (in the article), they agreed - especially about who is to blame for the confusion - the press. Well the public too but as Lesley Garrett said, that doesn't and shouldn't matter. Dame Kiri criticised and insulted the genre and Hayley (intentionally or not) and in that, she was wrong - especially with her "fakes" remark. She should learn to answer the question and not go off into what amounts to a rant about in effect "who is best" - something that was never asked. On a more humourous note: Dancing With The Stars review - Kiri sings! (NZ Stuff) Cheers, Dave

I think the best-known opera stars are more publicly tolerant of popera, but who knows what they really think? Hi Steve, I don't think anyone would object to what she thinks privately. She is as entitled to an opinion as anyone else. It is the fact that she has slammed the genre and especially one particular singer publicly that has rattled so many of us. No matter how she feels about Hayley, that was WRONG. Roger

Cheers, Dave As we have cause to say so often, 'thank you Dave'. This should definitely be listened to, it is cool commonsense from someone (Lesley) who quietly knows what she is talking about. The problem we are left with is why on earth should Kiri shoot off her mouth burbling a load of arrant codswallop and being deliberately downrigh B.. rude about one of her compatriots who has been praised by their own prime minister (and a range of independent organisations) for being such a super advertisement for their own country?! Was she just momentarily addled? There isn't a subject. There isn't a dispute. Some like it some don't which has been the history of music down the ages, so what on earth was Kiri waffling about? Most interestingly Lesley said, 'don't lets get hung up on this'! Peter S.

It is so irresponsible, irrational and without provocation we must pursue the reason and the more we look at it, it begs the question, did she suddenly do a mental flip? There are some mental conditions that in their early stages are difficult to pin down until a pattern emerges, so perhaps we just have a long wait in store? Peter S.

Hehe, you know, Kiri can't hold a candle to Hayley. If she ever tries, she'll find out the fat's in the fire.
Perhaps she then will emit some melodious squeaks.
She can be sure of one thing though: it ain't over until the fat lady sings (singes?)

Thanks to Dave for extracting the relevant part of the BBC Radio 4 interview.
It was recognised that the press are largely at fault for incorrectly labelling crossover artists as opera singers. If Dame Kiri had slammed them for their errors, I think most of us would have agreed with her but to blame the artist(s) is adding insult to injury, and displays her own ignorance of the true situation.

Hello Everyone,
I am not too familiar in what's going on in N.Z. or this Dame Kiri person.
But When you have action there is a reaction, that's universal.
So for Dame to say things like that about Hayley, I am sorry to say Hayley had to do something to cause that.
I am not sure everything that Hayley has done but I will list several: 1. She is the number one singer in N.Z. & I am pretty sure that she must be the number one personality also. 2. She had just won The Global Kiwi - and that's a pretty big deal. 3. She helps with several charities. 4. She is family orientated. 5. There are no reports of drug abuse. Looking at this list I am sure there are other things that Hayley has accomplished that she should be proud of...
So my conclusion is that Dame Kiri's reaction is being JEALOUS, that is an evil that can destroy a person.....WAKE UP DAME!
And a Big Bravo to Hayley for not making any comments!
Best Regards, Howard
