I just did a search on the CBA 2013, just to see if it would be in May like it always used to be. However, on the Royal Albert Hall website, it lists it as October 1, 2013, though it says To Be Confirmed. So, I wonder if it will always be in October now. And, if Hayley's album were really to be released in June, I wonder if that would be soon enough to be nominated? What's the cut-off time to be eligible for nominations? www.zapaday.com/event/463747/1/Classic+Brit+Awards.html

I would not be surprised if Hayley's new album were not eligible anyway, for reason of not being sufficiently classical. As BlueLeslie pointed out, there was nothing in the Taipei concert that you would define as "classical". We shall see.

Hi Libby and everyone,
Just to add that in previous years, the cut-off date for album releases has always been the preceding 31st December.
There are, of course, other categories and performers don't necessarily need to have been nominated in anything. Hayley herself was a good example of that, when she performed there in 2003.
Also, the definition of classical has been relaxed even further since the event was re-named as "Classic", and it was always a fairly loose definition anyway. If Hayley's album causes a stir, I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to get her involved but time will tell.
Cheers, Dave

As BlueLeslie pointed out, there was nothing in the Taipei concert that you would define as "classical". We shall see. Martin D Martin, I doubt she's dropping out of classical. In Asia she sings more pop (your favorite songs, remember?), and I think songs like La Califfa would be considered classical crossover. She sang You Raise Me Up (according to Frank), and that is most often done by CC singers. The CBA seems to award plenty of CC singers, not just purely classical artists. To go by what you just said, there is absolutely nothing on Paradiso that you [Martin] would define as "classical". What arias do you find on that CD, I ask you? She has talked about this before, that she often changes her setlists to suit the tastes of whatever country she's performing in. Obviously Asia likes her J-pop songs, classical, and show tunes. She's performed that sort of song for years. So what else is new, really? You can't necessarily judge her next album by what she performs in concert before she tells us anything about it, can you? She didn't perform any Paradiso songs before she told us what the album was going to be. She did sing some in concert before the UK release, but at that point, it was already out in NZ, Australia, and Japan (right?).

Hi Libby,
You have said yourself and I agree that we would like to hear a lot more of Hayley's own compositions on the new album. I doubt that they would be classed as classical.unless she used classical derived tunes as she did on Pure. Classic FM I know bends over backwards to extend the definition of "classical", including a lot of film music and musical theatre. The Classic Brits may well do the same. It is quite possible that they will decide that Hayley is basically a classical artist, and that therefore anything she does is by definition classical. I hope they do since it increases the chance of her music being played on the radio. Genre boundaries are artificial anyway (I have had this argument with Nicola several times). In the end it is up to the people who run these things like radio stations and awards ceremonies to decide what it eligible. I can't second guess it, I doubt Hayley or her management or her record company can either. So Hayley can either target her music, and especially her albums at specific genres, which could limit her creativity. Or not bother and do her own thing. I know which I would prefer, but commercial considerations might give a different answer.

Yes, I would absolutely love to hear lots more of Hayley's original material, but I'm guessing that she will have made some of them at least fit the crossover part of classical crossover. I would love for most of the album to be Hayley's own songs, but there's no guarantee of that. If she has any cover songs on there, they could very well fit in the classical/classical crossover genre. You say you would be surprised if her album won't qualify as classical this time. I say, I'll be surprised if it doesn't. What, do you think she'll now qualify for the plain Brit awards now? LOL I don't think so. There aren't any classical songs on Mary Jess Leaverland's album, but her music is still considered to be CC music, isn't it?

Hi Libby,
Don't know that Classic FM ever plays Mary-Jess. Certainly never heard it. But remember Darren Henley of Classic FM co-authored "In Her Own Voice" so I think Classic FM is very well disposed towards Hayley. They allowed Paradiso, even though that is film music rather than classical. Of course if she is more poppy, she might even get played on BBC Radio 2. In fact there are songs she has recorded that could go very well on that station, but it seems they pretty much ignore her records. Of course we don't have any real idea of what is on the album. But if there are classic pop songs like Bridge over Troubled Water they might go for it. And you never know, we might even get some of her Chinese/Taiwanese stuff, provided it doesn't have the same problems as her Japanese recordings seem to.

Sorry, Martin, but I seriously doubt any of the Chinese songs would be on an international release. I hope it's at least on a Taiwanese release that's obtainable by all of us! What problems did the Japanese recordings have, other than supposedly not being what her international audience wants?

Is there any chance the song Sleep On could qualify as a single, or is it still too late for that?
