Does anyone know if the guitar she used is the one Roger gave her?

Thanks to Martin for La Califfa, and Tim for the full version of YRMU! I think it was fabulous, I love it when she "belts", actually. Anyway, the first version I ever heard is by a singer with a powerful, somewhat "belting" voice anyway, so I guess that's what I'm used to and prefer for that song. If anything, Union Chapel has really got me intrigued to see what is next with Hayley. Judging my her comments on Twitter, a new album might not be as imminent as we'd hoped, but the Japan concerts indicate that Hayley will be doing some concerts next year. Perhaps there will be more Far East concerts at the same time? It would be excellent fun if Hayley was to have her own YouTube channel where she could upload videos of herself performing some of her guitar pieces like Talk To Me -- but I imagine there's probably contractual and licensing restrictions going on with all of that. At any rate, Union Chapel seems to indicate to me sort of where Hayley sees her future direction in music lying and I really like it. Like Libby said - it's a bit like Josh Groban's recent repertoire. Not classical, but at the same time really different to mainstream pop. Right now, if I could imagine Hayley's next album, it would be something folky, whimsical with a bit of a country vibe running through it. I just get that sort of impression. No idea whether I'm right or not! Cheers, Jillian Yes, but the old-time country, hopefully, rather than the rock country on the radio in the US these days. I don't really care for it otherwise, though I did like it for a time. And I really don't care for the pop country with the simplistic tunes that are very popular with young girls, if you understand me. LOL

Martin, I'm just quoting "Belting (or vocal belting) is a specific technique of singing by which a singer produces a loud sound in the upper middle of the pitch range. Singers can use belting to convey heightened emotional states." So I don't think I was wrong or disrespectful when I used to the term belting, because clearly that was what she was doing Glad that the concert audience enjoyed it. And Marindn, thanks for that video, indeed better than the previous performance! I always love to see Hayley's expression during the interlude, that pathos is clearly seen in her face, and even more so when she sings the last verse in Italian. Stunning performance. I still go back to close to you and keep listening to it The vocalese part is just amazing and effortless. EDIT: I had a run through of all your videos, wonderful job you've done www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzYCW3bhSLw This is definitely my favourite, I'm guessing that was one of your best concerts of hers. I'd have melted to hear the opening acapella of this hymn. I want to hear her sing this song in the recent times, difficult to top this performance I'm sure. The light on her face adds to the angelic scene.XD

Country is an American thing, not really very popular anywhere else, and I'm sure not in Hayley's key markets in the Far East. So I don't expect her to move that way anytime soon. Folk, I'd love that. I loved her Celtic stuff. I understand they like that in Japan too. And English folk like Scarborough Fair, I love that, but England isn't her key market. But then I don't think genres interest Hayley. She sings what she likes, not what is expected of her, and that was never more obvious than at the Union Chapel. This was such a fantastic show, simply because Hayley was being Hayley, what she wanted to be, not what was expected of her. It was a privilege to be there to be honest. And I always felt Hayley was doing this for her loyal fans. I doubt that it was very profitable for her financially, with the small venue. Although there would have been no advertising costs. I think Hayley enjoyed herself just as much as we in the audience did. That makes a difference, it is infectious.

Just before she sang that, the narrator had not held back, telling us in full grisly detail what it was like to be a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, just as it is grisly to be involved in any war. The short life expectancy, and the horrible deaths that many of them suffered, like being burned to death in the cockpit and unable to escape. If it they did escape, being horribly disfigured. Then, following that narration, Hayley came out and sang Abide With Me. I heard sobbing in the audience, that is how powerful and moving it was. So you are right, that was a very special performance. One that gets to me every time. Martin D

I think one of the things that really did strike me on Friday was how versatile she is. She can change between genres effortlessly. I did have tickets to see her at the Barbican a couple of years ago but the weather was appalling and I had to cancel the trip due to snow. So, this was the first occasion I was in the right place at the right time to see her again. I must admit in future I will be watching out for her performances as I would love to see her live again. As an aside. I have on DVD her performance of Whispers in a Dream on the Rhydian TV show. It isn't uploaded to You Tube in it's own right.........maybe you already have it on the forum somewhere but if not I can do that for you all.

Does anyone know if the guitar she used is the one Roger gave her? Hi Libby, not sure if this has been answered yet but do you know where I can find the picture of that guitar? It would be nice if she played that one guitar on her first (?) live performance playing -Rory

Yes, I agree, I too enjoyed Hayley's guitar playing although she only played 3 chords, C Major, G7 and D Minor, which are usually the first ones anyone learns on a guitar. I'm hoping she knows a few more than that, and was just being careful, knowing that she had to sing at the same time. Or perhaps when she wrote that song, she was much more of a beginner on the instrument than she is now. I too would like to encourage her to play the guitar on stage more often. It was delightful. Martin D Well let's not forget Amaj! I've got a lot of catching up to do here, but the guitar in Talk to Me sounds great. However simple the chords, her technique was quite relaxed, so I'd say she definitely is capable of more (the Gsus#4 would've been nice, like in the piano version -Rory

Yes, I agree Rory. Despite the simple chords, she made it sound better than that. It looked and sounded good. I'm sure it is something she can build on.

Hello Annime, Since you have mentioned in particular that you absolutely loved hearing "Summer Fly" at the concert, and will soon have Hayley's album containing that song, here are a few bits of remotely connected trivia which you may find of interest. From the fine print accompanying your CD, you will see that Donnell Leahy and Natalie MacMaster (husband and wife) with Natalie's band produced the music for "Summer Fly", track 12. Given below is the address of a rather surprising video (the surprise part being Hayley's performance halfway through the video, speaking of versatility) showing Natalie and her band's pianist, Mac Morin, performing. (Hayley and Bela Fleck were featured guests at Natalie's concert, "Bringing It Home", in Nova Scotia, back in 2006.) How nice it would be if we were able to see a video of her band producing the background music for "Summer Fly". www.youtube.com/watch?v=daq8YZsls_0If you Google -youtube summer fly line dance- you will find about 25 videos of groups dancing to Hayley's recording. It is apparently a popular song to dance to. Hayley sang this song at the Frangoulis show in Boston with the Boston Pops back in June 2012, but it was dropped from the DVD of the show that was made for sale. hwi.proboards.com/indexcgi?board=hayley05&action=display&thread=2490Enjoy, BobS PS Can't let this go unmentioned - youtube.com/watch?v=Vl_lnM21pb4

OK here is another one. I Know You By heart. youtu.be/QFd37xYNAtMAs always, it will improve with time. Oh, and this is another one I have another version of on my channel. This time from the Bath Forum, and it is much less clear which is best. Form your own opinions (and let me know). The Bath Forum video is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlt5_JK5XTIFor me I think the Union Chapel has it. And it moved me to tears, in my current situation, she might well leave me in autumn. Martin D

Absolutely wonderful! I love her emotion, but I would've liked this one one the gentler side, though.
Thank you Martin, for the video. I wish you well right now. I wish I could give you more comfort than that, but distance has its limitations.
