Hayley in 'GekkanNZ' Magazine

I have recently added a most unusual item to my Hayley collection. 'GekkanNZ magazine (Gekkan is Japanese for monthly) This magazine is produced in Japanese for japanese tourists to New Zealand.

The issue I have is dated September 2005 and has a feature article on Hayley. As it is all in japanese, I have no idea what the article is about, but it contains some pictures of Hayley that I have not seen before.

Many thanks for sharing the scans.
My Japanese is a bit rusty; I can't understand all the characters, but the second page you posted can more or less be translated as following.
It's a rough translation given that I had to translate it first from Japanese to French in my mind, then French to English so err...the sense remains but not necessarily the vocabulary. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

I am minded of a story I once heard when someone translated a famous Bible verse into Russian and then back into English. It ended up "the vodka was good, but the meat was tasteless..."

Mark, I lived in Japan during 3 years and I studied the language in France taking extra-classes. I had to stop three years ago because I wanted to start Chinese and I couldn't do both.
So it's great for me to "practice" once in a while, particularly when it's related to Hayley. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

I managed to translate the first three paragraphs (the Japanese write from right to left, up to down).
They use a lot of characters but the text is actually very short.
Here's the beginning :

Five busy years
Hayley recorded her first album at 13, almost five years ago. Her life has changed completely since the release of « Pure ». This album was ranked #1 on the UK classical charts and even entered the pop charts at #8. She has travelled around the world to promote it, particularly in London where the recording was done. But even then, she’s not the « star » we would think she is. She could adopt a haughty attitude and be bigheaded but we discovered that it’s clearly not the case.

You can easily see the "5" of the title on the right of the first page. The "13" is for her age, and "8" is about Pure's rank in the pop charts.

The previous translation was the easiest part.
Now it gets a bit harder particularly when there are Japanese expressions.
The following part stops just before the "18 something" blue title on the first page.

« Pure »...... [sorry I don't understand the title!]

Almost three years have passed since the recording of « Pure » and Hayley had the time to grow during this period of time. Research for new tunes usually need a tremendous amount of work but with « Odyssey », she discovered songs without really being aware of it. She decided to include them in her new album, songs that grew on her during the past three years.

Hayley has everything : voice, style and heart. She also tries new things : for instance, she can sing with an orchestra and the minute after perform solo with an acoustic guitar. She’s not strictly classical either and is keen on adopting different genres. The album’s arrangement is also another challenge. She’s no longer a beginner, so the tension can be bigger because people see you as a « veteran » and expectations are therefore higher [The paragraph ends with a Hayley quote but I don’t really understand it ; she more or less says that the difficulty was that people could now compare her new album to « Pure » which wasn’t the case when her first international album went out].
