You're probably right, Bob. It's hard to be patient, though. I did find a hotel that wouldn't be too bad in price, but the flight is expensive, and weather. Cherany, maybe if you were miraculously able to get off work and go, maybe we could meet somehow, and go together. For me, travelling alone isn't just about inexperience and stress, it's also due to the fact that I look very young. Everyone would think that I'm a kid travelling by myself. Of course, travelling with a parent would enforce the assumption of my youthfulness even more, but if I was travelling with someone closer to my age (although you'd probably appear to be quite a bit older than me), it would be more comfortable. I think I'll at least wait to see the price of the tickets, discuss it with my dad, and then... see which performer will be on the Mormon Tabernacle choir Christmas concert this year! They should be announcing it soon. Salt Lake City wouldn't be much better as far as weather concerns, though, probably worse. But at least it's closer. I don't know if it's worth hoping that this will be Hayley's year for that or not. In my mind, if it's not her year for The Hobbit soundtrack, then it has to be her year for the MTC! They said that she's in their plans, it's just a matter of when everything works out right for her and the choir. It has to happen sometime!

Trips and hotels aside, think how great this will be for Hayley! She'll get to meet and sing in the presence of Loreena McKennitt and Sarah McLachlan! And all this at the Carnegie Hall in New York, USA! What a great opportunity for Hayley! She still sings Loreena's song, and a song that Sarah has recorded as well (River). I actually used to think River was a Sarah M. song, because I heard her version on the radio a lot. And when it got to the "I made my baby cry" part, I thought she meant an actual baby! I never knew Joni Mitchell was the original singer till Hayley sang it. I think this must be one of the things Hayley meant a month ago or so when she said her management was cooking up some exciting things. The David Foster tour might've been one of those things too. These are definitely some very exciting things for Hayley!

Umm, actually, I take that back. The hotel room for 2 adults would be over 700!! That is insane! I tried a chain hotel that I know is one of the cheaper ones, and it seems a little more doable, but I'm still not sure. I keep getting confused by the rates I'm seeing. That's why at first I thought the one hotel was only 300+ for 2 people, but it turns out, it was only for 1 person! The cheaper hotel is about 2 miles away from the Hall. That gets complicated, when you know nothing about transportation in a city you've never been to! You see why I definitely can't go by myself? I could never cope. Hi Libby If I go I'd split the room with you if you would like. Don't worry I'm 73 and have been happily married for 50 years. I haven't been to NY for several years but I could get us there from the hotel. If it's only 2 miles that's walkable.I've been to the U K 6 or 7 times to see Hayley and this would be much cheaper than that. Larry

Hi Libby, A trip for you to New York City to see Hayley at Carnegie Hall in a program of that type would be a huge amount of money to put at risk for the possibility of so many unforseen circumstances of all kinds that might arise. If it were only to California, I perhaps would think a bit differently. Your day to see her under favorable circumstances will come. That's for sure. Just don't be one to have a "Larry Hauck" experie Sincerely, BobS Hey, what's a Larry Hauck experience? Larry hauck

Larry I would be fine with having my own room (more than fine, actually, LOL), but I would be happy to meet you and be accompanied by an HWI member. That would certainly make things easier. Travelling alone still concerns me, though. Being inexperienced, and then looking very young would make me very vulnerable. Not an ideal situation for me. I still haven't mentioned it to my dad yet. If only my sister could get brave and go! She's so worried about food because of her sensitivities, and she's not a very experienced traveller, either. The hotels I've settled on (if I were to go) are the La Quinta right near the La Guardia airport (might that be noisy, though?), or the Best Western Plaza Hotel. I think they're both about 2 miles from the Hall. Or, actually, there's the Best Western City View Inn, which I discovered is slightly cheaper, and I think closer. They're both across a body of water from the Hall, though. Can you walk safely across the bridges in NY? I don't know what water it is. I see a Roosevelt Island there, if that helps. Google doesn't name the water. Now, if we could just get Tim J in on this, too.

I have largely been keeping quiet here, partly because Hayley has not been active this side of the Atlantic, partly because I have come to dislike some of the people here. However, this is my home area. Libby, the body of water you refer to is the East River, and walking from Queens (where the airports are) all the way to 57th and 7th in Manhattan is unwise. In fact doing so from near LaGuardia would take you all the way across Brooklyn, with all its myriad of neighborhoods. However, the good news is that the MTA subways would make that unnecessary. If you look on the map here www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm you should be able to find your way there - you can purchase an MTA card, which will give you access to the entire system, with relative ease at most stations. My advice to you, as someone who's been all over NYC and to Carnegie Hall several times, is to study the map carefully, know exactly where you are going, and never look like you are lost (another friend of mine found out the hard way the consequences of doing that).

Your honesty is admirable, It is very brave of you to stick your neck out like that, there is so little honesty, loyalty or integrity in the world anymore.

Yes Libby it really IS worth making the effort. As Martin says, there's only one Hayley. I remember once I went to a Hayley concert in London in the middle of Winter. We got stuck in a blizzard and I missed the first half and got home in time to have 2 hours sleep before getting up again but it was still worth it. You won't regret trying to see Hayley. No one ever does.
You also have to bear in mind that once married Hayley may start a family and she may quit touring for a while so you never know when you will get another chance to see her.

Steve, I appreciate your advice. This actually sounds really complicated. I really don't know if I want to try the subways. Aren't there buses or anything? Or taxi? Anyway, this makes me less likely to want to try it, worth it or not. It would not be worth getting lost or mugged. Jeff, it would be worth it to me (if I didn't get lost or mugged). Now that I t think about it, if you look at the number of acts performing at this event... it would be an extremely short show if they each only sang one song! I bet Hayley will sing more than one! But then I wonder how many Tim Janis would sing. Anyway, Jeff, you'd have to try to convince my reluctant family members that it's worth it, but I doubt you'd be able to. They're not only not what you'd call Hayley fans (even though it was my dad who originally liked her), but they're party poopers about a lot of this kind of thing. My sister said something like, "go all the way to New York just to go to a concert?" and I said, "What else would I go there for? JUST to see the Statue of Liberty?" LOL If I went there for a concert, I'd like to try to do something, like maybe go to Central Park or something. But my sister thinks we'll see "bums" there. As if we've never seen them anywhere around here. You see what I have to deal with? They are party poopers about everything! They don't seem very interested in travelling. I have mentioned the concert to my dad now, but I haven't actually asked him if he'd like to go with me yet. I think for now, I'll just wait and see how much the tickets are, and maybe, hopefully the MTC will have announced their performers. If Hayley were to be on this year, I wouldn't want to miss that, but I wouldn't want to do both NY and Salt Lake City. I doubt it'll be Hayley this year, though. All my hope and obsession over these Hayley projects, and I end up feeling very pessimistic about it all. Must be some "tires" rubbing off on me. LOL

Hi everyone,
Here is the official media release from Hayley's management for Carnegie Hall, including details of a 30% ‘fan appreciation ticket discount’ for early bookers though I'm not sure if we can yet find out the actual prices, check the link below.
Cheers, Dave

Yes, Libby, there are buses, also accessible with the MTA card. A taxi ride from where you would be staying to Carnegie Hall might get expensive, though. Best bet is the train, which is actually a fairly clean ride since you would not be passing through "da Bronx" or Harlem where most of the yucky neighborhoods are. The map you can download really tells you all you need to know, but there are more detailed ones available for a few bucks in the city, plus the hotel concierges are usually good with directions.
You could also go to the Carnegie Deli nearby for a bite - or several - before the show (they are famous for their gigantic sandwiches). The area near Carnegie Hall is mostly commercial (Rockefeller Center and the theater district are south, Central Park is 2 blocks north) and not the kind of area where muggings, shootings, or murders are a regular occurrence.
If you wanted to fill up the day before the concert, your best bet is to come into Manhattan that morning around 34th Street, check out the Macy's Christmas Window displays (world famous), then make your way north checking out Lord and Taylor and about four other stores who are all noted for their Xmas displays, stopping for lunch along the way.
You can also hit St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Museum of Modern Art (home of van Gogh's "Starry Night"), and Rockefeller Center with its famed Christmas tree and skating rink. You can go into Central Park, but it isn't really all that interesting in winter. If you go a bit farther north there is also Lincoln Center and the more famous museums like the American Museum of Natural History (home of the dinosaur bones and the life-size blue whale) and the Met of Art (home of Washington Crossing the Delaware and countless other works), but those are probably a good 30-40 minutes' walk to the north and take half a day to a day each to see properly.
If you want to take the train down to the WTC you could shop at the South Street Seaport mall (maybe you'd run into Hayley there) or see Ground Zero. This is all just scratching the surface, I could go on and on about this or that area of Manhattan depending on what you are interested in. The idea that you would be coming to NYC "just for a concert" is simply mistaken. I'm just a casual citygoer and I could easily put together three days' worth of walking tours that would leave you with great memories.
BTW, a cheaper option for staying might be staying in Hudson County or Bergen County, NJ, where you can just hop on the train or ferry in the morning. The hotels there are much more reasonably priced than staying in the City proper. That said, if your family isn't too keen on the idea of taking a trip to New York at the start of the Christmas season, which isn't a cheap venture, there isn't too much you can do to convince them. PM me if you want to know more about specifics in the area as far as when, where how, etc.
