PS
I am anxious to read what Libby might have to say in comment about the dvd when she receives it - - - someday!
Well, I received it just the other day, and had a little time to play the "important" parts today!
Be warned, a very hefty review follows:
So, the songs included on the DVD are, in order, Gabriel's Oboe, A Hero is Inside, and Naturaleza Muerta. I really enjoyed all of them, but especially her solo. I thought she did a beautiful job! The beginning was a tiny bit slower than I like, but not as heavy as she's done in the past. The rest of it, especially the 2nd half, was pretty much as perfect and heavenly as on the album. You know what I think the difference is? Violins/stringed instruments make her sing lighter, because they're lighter-sounding instruments. When she sings with just the piano during her regular concerts, she sings more heavily, because the piano just makes a heavier sound. They didn't put Whispers in a Dream as part of the title, but that won't hurt if anyone wants to look her up, they'll still be able to find the song, and hopefully the album!
Of the duets, I liked the 2nd one best; she hit some extra beautiful high notes, including right at the end, although I thought the beginning was a little on the "chirpy" side, but otherwise great.
I liked the Hero one more than I thought I would, going by the previews.
I was glad she was shown in both her dresses! The blue one for the first 2 songs, and the red one for the last one.
I listened to a couple other songs by Mario, and I enjoyed them as well. The one right before Naturaleza, called I'm With You, I thought was especially beautiful. A beautiful melody and lyrics, plus he has a very nice voice. I Believe in You was the first song, and I liked that one, too.
All the other guests had the same number of songs on the album, except Alkistis, who had an extra one in the bonus features. Alkistis had 2 duets and a solo in the main part like Hayley, but George Perris got 2 solos and a duet.
The bonus features include very brief interviews with the special guests. Hayley's was first, and as I say, very brief. Mostly just how she's known Mario for a long time now, and how it was lovely to be invited for this concert, since he had toured with her on one of her UK tours before. They played Whispers in the background, which I found distracting from the dialogue.
So far, I think the DVD is great, and I'm glad I spent the money, even if it was a little expensive.
However, there were some technical features of the product that I disliked. The picture was a little off. Some of the time Mario's head gets cut off, usually in close up shots, and also in the menu picture. The top of Hayley's head was a tiny bit truncated as well, but not so much as to reduce my enjoyment of her performance. Everyone looked a little narrow, but that's not unusual with my TV. I don't think my TV is considered a wide-screen TV, it's wider than all the ones I've used in the past. That doesn't explain the vertical issue.
I wasn't sure the sound quality was the best, either; I had to keep switching sound modes in order to find the best one. The voices sounded clear and all that. I'm not even sure how to describe it, but it was like it wasn't quite loud enough, so I turned it up higher than I do for Hayley's DVD, for example.
Another mild annoyance was that there is no song selection. You can skip, but the numbers are off from what it says on the back of the case. He didn't start singing till the player said track #2, so I guess the introduction with Keith Lockhart and Mario coming out is considered #1. It's a little confusing. So, Hayley's songs are #9, #10, and #21, but you have to go to, 10, 11, and 22 instead. I bet I can get to them by pressing those numbers, too, so I'll try that next time to see. I definitely plan on watching the entire thing at some point. As I was skipping through, I heard some potentially good songs. The Spanish one with Alkistis sounds like a fun one. Just after hearing the 2 songs by Mario, I'm considering buying his album. It's not a bad price at Amazon.com, despite being an import.
